Best code editor. If you talk this up on mastodon, it will show up on mastodon when people search best code editor. xD #linux #unix #vim
@nixCraft best code editor is #emacs obviously.
@dragnucs @nixCraft I hope some day to have enough RAM to launch emacs. Some day.
@bink @nixCraft 😀 you need even more to launch codium or vs code.
@dragnucs @nixCraft Emacs isn't a code editor. It's an operating system without operating a system.
@nixCraft Never used it but I want to see this happen.
@nixCraft drop the “m” and we’ll talk 😂

@nixCraft There are two types of people in the world - those who know regex and those who hate Vim. 🤪

@elijah @nixCraft i'd say there are two types: those who love typing text, and those who love ctrl and alt :-)

obviously, the first use vi[m].

@tivasyk @nixCraft Fair enough, I just really like being able to move the cursor using regex so quickly (including anchors like $ and ^)
And honestly, for some common tasks, vim requires fewer keystrokes than emacs/nano.

@nixCraft That's probably more accurate!

Honestly though, nano and vim are just different styles. Some think in vim, some in emacs/nano. I personally like vim as I feel it better integrates into the posix world as it mimics command-line tools like sed and a subset of it's commands also work in other tools like less. Ultimately, it's whatever works best for you.
But I'll still say, basic exposure to vi[m] is a requirement of running a *nix system and an expert can do more faster in vi[m].

@nixCraft
This isn't a code editor it's a prison of the soul, it scars you..... you'll never forget....
@urologi @nixCraft Nor will you ever be able to exit
@nixCraft Do you not like people? Sounds like it lol
@nixCraft As far as I'm concerned: :q
Anything with two modes where you have to memorize keyboard shortcuts (beyond those of readline) is unusable.
@schamschula @nixCraft What’s a :q? I haven’t been able to exit vim for a while
@nixCraft Yeah, it's great but the slope of it's learning curve is that of Mount Everest. Nowadays a lot of people climb it but it's not for everyone :-D
@nixCraft neovim.
@kenos @nixCraft +1
Neovim with plugins and lua config is just great.
@nixCraft Real programmers use Butterflies.
@nixCraft who needs bloaty vscode if you can run vim on any OS 🤘
#vim #gvim
@nixCraft i hate having to buy a new computer every time i open vim...
@spockthebest @nixCraft Just a part of the vim lifestyle
@nixCraft I would have agreed if I hadn't found #helixeditor 😜
@nixCraft I am using just Vi without m? Am I wierd?
@nixCraft
Emacs of course has an excellent vi implementation.

@WinNT4
VSCode is cool but how about that VSCodium? It’s almost like VSCode but maybe a bit less poisoned with Microsoft. Just sayin

@nixCraft the best thing is once they try it, there is no escape (because no one knows how to) 🤣

@nixCraft

vim vim vim vim vim!
25 years, 150 websites, masses of shell scripts and web programming, emails and writings and poems and notes, it's like being an octopus, the typing brains are in the tips of my fingers, the main brain is free for thinking about the coding/writing/ideas/logics, ohyes vim + shell + cli + files vim vim vim vim

#linux #unix #vim #BestCodeEditor #TalkinItUpCauseILoveIt #YMMVthatsokWeAllHaveDifferentThingsToLove

@nixCraft I’ve been using Vim for about 25 years now! It’s really hard to quit.
@nixCraft Is there another editor? Not sure I'm familiar with any other! :p
@nixCraft I used to use vi/vim a lot on the old days. Loved it. My friends thought I was nuts. But I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve been using vscode almost exclusively for the last few years. 😶
@nixCraft learned vim, then just installed vim plugin on all ide/code editor. Vim is good but modern ide + vim plugin is way better.
@nixCraft As an @EmacsUser, I respectfully disagree.
@nixCraft I use the Atari screen editor
@nixCraft that’s a weird way to spell gedit. Once you get the plugins kicking it’s better than anything.
