Trying to run the dishwasher in France. Nothing appears to be dishwasher liquid. This looks like the closest thing. Is that what it is?
Thank you everyone for replies! I wasn't going to use anything I wasn't sure if! It’s frustrating because they have every other kind of cleaning liquid in the apartment, plus they have tabs for the washing machine. It seems odd to have a dishwasher in a Paris apartment at all, so perhaps they don’t stock the dishwasher tablets. We’re only here for a few days, so it doesn’t make much sense for us to buy them. I just was trying to go to washing dishes for several days. But I guess I will!
@glennf to be fair, i know several people in nyc (where dishwashers are seen as a luxury item) who use theirs only as drying racks because they never learned how to use one
@glennf Speaking from Italy so I have zero experience of washing dishes in Paris, but: my mom has a dishwasher which uses tabs: maybe there are some near the ones for the washing machine?
@glennf “it seems odd to have a dishwasher in a Paris apartment at all” - WHAT? The vast majority of houses / apartments in France have a dishwasher, including in Paris. Why wouldn’t they?!
@_pierre_ do they! Is that new?
@glennf errr no? I’ve never known a house or flat without a dishwasher (unless in a very cheap student flat) and I’m 43…
@_pierre_ I was severely misinformed! The fellow who got us settled into the rental implied it was rare too! Oddly, they are pretty variable in America. Older apartments often lack the plumbing (and space in big cities).
@glennf I think he was trying to “oversell” his rental, or maybe he was implying that not all airbnbs in Paris had one (I doubt it). Many Parisian apartments are optimized for this, including the not uncommon rack of washing machine + dryer on top of each over hidden in a cupboard of some sort :) - which district / arrondissement are you renting in (if you want to share)? Don’t hesitate if you have any days left and need recommendations for stuff to visit / do.
@_pierre_ gree was just an greeter. Now I'm not know!
@_pierre_ Thank you for the offer! We're in the 10th and going to Versailles (tour, AC on bus, our one big luxury) and then off to London! The 10th is pretty great. We're enjoying it a lot. Did the Catacombs, Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Musée des Arts Decoratifs...I wish I'd had time for Rodin but was too hot and tired this afternoon. I also love d'Orsay but didn't have room.
@glennf Versailles’ garden should be enjoyable if it’s not too hot, I hope you’ll like it!
@glennf @_pierre_ Heatwave here in the U.K. as well continuing all next week 27c in London…
@glennf you will find these tabs in any supermarket, and they will cost maybe 2€/20pc. Worth it 😉
@glennf Cream bleach for cleaning surfaces
I think usually called "Vim" in English

@glennf
You may have better luck looking for tablets.

Also and Lidl - if you have them in reach - do good ones.

Bonne chance!

@glennf
No tabs in a square plastic bucket with a lid?
@glennf looks like surface cleaner, which i assume would send suds all over the place
@glennf You're looking for something labeled "lave-vaisselle." (I'm embarrassed that I had to look that up after once being fluent in French, even if "once" = 30 years ago.)
@glennf Nope! That’s a mildly abrasive cleaning cream. Keep looking.
@chrisphin I found it online finally!
@glennf Used to be called Jif in the UK, but it rebranded to harmonise with the continent; ‘Jif’ in Spanish would be quite a thing to pronounce.
@chrisphin @glennf it was also Jif in The Netherlands before they switched it to Cif
@glennf dishwasher liquid isn’t really a think in France. Look for the tablet version. Will be something like this

@glennf it appears detergent adjacent. Like a water softener, surfactant for spot free drying. A bounce dryer sheet, oxy clean type of niche.

It also looks to be meant for machine dish washing. Not hand dish washing.

@glennf have you experimented at all with the Translate app with camera/photo content? That would definitely be in my Paris toolkit.
@glennf
You know you can use your iPhone camera to translate the text on the package, right? I do it all the time with Japanese products and usage directions.
@nightscotsman Yes, and with Google Translate too. The translation wasn't as crystal clear (get it!) as I liked.
@glennf Do yourself a favour, get a small pack of tabs and leave the ones you don't need. The next rentee(?) will appreciate it.
@astifter we need just one so I think we've settled on hand washing! We will be leaving jam and some other items behind though!
@glennf No! That's like Soft Scrub with bleach
