Reporters and editors seem incapable of framing the #trumpindictment as a vital affirmation of the rule of law rather than some risky gamble with the legitimacy of our justice system. I haven't seen a piece suggesting that *not* holding him accountable might undermine public trust.

#media

@JoshuaHolland Yeah public trust is already in short supply, even among the left. It would be simple common sense to try and re-establish it by demonstrating that accountability isn't only for the poor.
@JoshuaHolland just the fact that he’s walked free for the 2-1/2 years after Jan 6 has profoundly undermined the legitimacy of the entire justice system in my mind. It’s changed how I think about all of it.
@JoshuaHolland that would violate The Oligarch Narrative that the writers are required to maintain
@JoshuaHolland Was surprised to see NYT editorial board headline "Trump left the Justice Dept. no choice".

@JoshuaHolland @socprof DC and the media are wired in favor of tall white older men in suits.

There were abundant editorials in 2017 calling for Hillary to shut up and fade away. There were none in 2021 saying Trump should do the same.

@hydrocabron @JoshuaHolland @socprof @RockyC Nor have they ever told Bernie to shut up and go away, nor any Republican who lost… ever. Just her

@hydrocabron @JoshuaHolland @socprof

They let Republicans do the risky heavy lifting.

@JoshuaHolland

That is a fantastic point.

Maybe hammering the public with his own words about how classified docs should be treated would be helpful?

Opinion | Trump’s Indictment: Given What We Know, Not Charging Him Would Be the Greater Scandal

The available evidence supports the indictment by the special counsel Jack Smith.

The New York Times
@JoshuaHolland They’re not interested in public trust, they want public submission. It’s the same reason they’ve long used “the commander in chief” to refer to the president, subtly implying that all of us are subject to a dictator’s commands whether or not we’ve ever joined or been conscripted into the military.
@JoshuaHolland Corporate media is a variety of oligarchs using the decaying corpse of journalism as a suit.
@JoshuaHolland
They're really lowballing the indictment. Every president since Roosevelt could have.been indicted. Especially Bush II.
@petersuber

@JoshuaHolland Laurence Tribe on The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell made that point last night:

Laurence Tribe: Trump indictment is ‘vindication for the rule of law’

YouTube
@JoshuaHolland though I'll gladly (and sadly) agree that the exception proves the rule.
@JoshuaHolland #trump, despicable sociopath that he is, is still a representative of the ruling class. He will garner some degree of defense from the corporate media, even though his class peers despise him, because he is an extension of them. Everything we’re seeing is more complicated than #trump being an obvious criminal. The perception of the imperviousness of the class he belongs to must be defended. That makes this open and shut case treacherous.

@JoshuaHolland

Guy does crime. Loads of crime.

Guy gets indicted.

Editors looking for a good way to both-side crime: This is a threat to the legitimacy of our justice system.
