I regret to inform you that we are currently at the Apple Newton level of AR/VR, and will be for another decade at least.
@codinghorror Can’t wait to see the 2024 version of “Eat up Martha”
@codinghorror Yes, but i think apple's strategy here is to dip their foot in the Newton waters so they can stick the landing on the iPhone-of-AR.
@codinghorror That is a *fabulous* analogy. I'm guessing 2027/28 for the acceptably mass market version, but I might be undershooting by 5 years.
@codinghorror exactly my thoughts last night. Meaning: in 20 years we will be at iPhone 1 days? Remember: no apps, no copy-paste.
Hope it'll go faster this time!
@codinghorror maybe even an early 2000s clie
@codinghorror Imagine the Newton if the Simpsons & co had been afraid to make fun of it.
@codinghorror The Newton was such a delightful experiment I would be overjoyed if this was true. I’m worried we’re more at the beige box of mediocrity of the start of 8088 clones level.
@codinghorror You just have to look at the evolution of truly wireless earbuds. Once Apple set the standards for them with AirPods it didn’t take long for Chinese OEMs to flood the market with viable $30 clones. There are OEMs who are trying to replicate and lower cost to headset components as we speak. It’s not going to take a decade.
@ravigupta so you're saying Zune is gonna win?
@codinghorror Zune was never much cheaper than the equivalent iPod. It failed to get traction. What made MP3 players widespread were the cheap clones that flooded the market. Was a single one of them responsible for this? No. As a collective yes.

@codinghorror

look ma, no hands, just eyes moves to keep my files and directories chaotic around, now with new tech, again!

@codinghorror I remember you said VR wouldn’t be good until we got 4k per eye. The apple device does this!
@eviltrout yes I was telling Betsy this LOL. It's almost 6k per eye, and 120hz. It meets the minimum specs I outlined in my blog post 🤣

@[email protected] @[email protected] once said of me "weak opinions strongly held" and it was, I think, the funniest way I've ever been described. Also, accurate!

Infosec Exchange
@balpha @eviltrout "it ain't bragging if you can back it up"
@codinghorror If the innovations so far are only compared to that, I'm excited for what happens in coming decades
