I have a theory that dappled light is a kind of nervous-system-calmer - like white noise for the body.

#YorkshireDales #nature #trees

@clarebee

I think so too! You know what I find beautiful and calming? Leaves lit by sunlight from the other side. You know, like you're sitting beneath a shady tree on a sunny day, and you look up and see all this sunlight filtered through chlorophyl? I love how it makes the leaves seem to glow.

@blinkenjim Totally - a special kind of light, heart-lifting stuff.
@clarebee I agree. It should be a part of every therapist's tool kit!
@clarebee I can totally relate! The opposite: when you’re driving and dappled light is strobe like. That makes me really stressed.
@madrobin Oh that's true. Dappled light at a walking pace only :)

@madrobin @clarebee

Driving through that kind of dappled light is a known seizure risk for people that are prone to photic seizures... (akin to flashing lights).

But a slow walk, it's high stim (intensity) but slow stim (temporally).... hmm

Now this has me wondering if there's some kind of #photicEntrainment ....

@clarebee one of my faves, always felt relaxed walking here
@bangskij Lovely - yes, something just releases. That silvery bark too - magic.
@clarebee @Defiance This is why I love my front yard especially in late summer.
@clarebee had a very similar thought when I was jogging under an ancient oak tree earlier. Such a calming effect.
@clarebee @donmelton OMG I couldn’t agree more! It’s absolutely delightful.
@clarebee I believe your theory is sound! And lovely photo!
@clarebee Perhaps because the leaves on the trees are always moving, making a continuous light show?

@stoicmike @clarebee

For a second there Mike I thought you were going to say

And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
You know I'm tryin' to please to the calling
Of your heartstrings that play soft and low

@phoutz @clarebee on the other hand, All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is gray (and the sky is gray)
I've been for a walk (I've been for a walk)
On a winter's day (on a winter's day)

@clarebee

beautiful, evocative photo. I agree with you 100% about dappled light.

I can never hear or see the word "dapple/d" without hearing these lines --

"I caught this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon"

@clarebee
If you get a chance to see a partial eclipse make sure to look at the shadows through leaves of a tree.

@GreenFire @clarebee @AwesomeAstronomy I wrote a song about that. https://canicula.com/wp/eclipse-lyric/

Brian May liked it. Sent me an email and everything 🥳

That's awesome! Who's Brian May?

@GreenFire @clarebee @AwesomeAstronomy The guitarist from Queen. He also has a PhD in Astronomy. On a study of the radial velocities of the dust in the Solar System that’s causes the Zodiacal Light.

Oh yeah, I just heard him on a radio segment just this week or actually I think it was last week's Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me.
@clarebee ♥️♥️♥️♥️!

@clarebee

Komorebi 木漏れ日 in Japanese is literally, "sunlight leaking through trees"

@clarebee Agreed! A nature-bath in dappled morning light calibrates my nervous system towards calm.

@clarebee That must be why impressionism & Pointillism calm me.

My personal hypothesis is that's because that's closer to the perpetual motion & interference patterns of what reality actually looks like. Our brains can chill out trying to make it all static and HD.
@clarebee dim lighting would be less detail the brain would need to process behind the seens, so less energy expended.
@clarebee Especially when there's water involved. 💦
@clarebee @Gargron repeating patterns of light and color across space and time can certainly do _bad_ things to us, so why shouldn’t this be possible too? Agreed!
@clarebee tbh: That’s the first time I’ve heard that term, I did not know there was a name for that — how cool! Now I can improve the Alt-Text.
@clarebee Absolutely, I run every day, and each day I come across patches like these. And I LOVE them.
@clarebee It could be. I've long hypothesized it's the colour green, so could be both :)
@clarebee yes! Although I don’t have a place like that near me that doesn’t a road full of traffic nearby, I do occasionally play Zelda just to take nature hikes. It works 💯
@clarebee I love the idea! You're probably right!
@clarebee Absolutely! And this picture helps me today 💚
@clarebee 100% - all the advantages of bright sunlight and lovely cool shade. Totally recuperative environment for me.
@clarebee Good theory. I shall seek out such light today to test it.

@clarebee Definitely the opposite for me... when I suffered extreme anxiety, broad daylight made me feel raw and exposed. In my mind, the worst things cpuld happen then.

Shade and night were the best escape.

@clarebee

What a lovely theory. Thank you for teaching me the word ‘dappled’. Now I can describe something that I’ve always been hyper aware of.

@clarebee I think you mean hypothesis
@clarebee in Dutch, the term is 'fluisterschaduw': whispershade.
I love this thread as I do dappled light. #dappledlight

@clarebee I agree, and also the ambient noise of leaves rustling overhead in very light breezes.
