The typography on the vintage Quincy loop elevated station, restored to resemble its former 19th-century glory.
Contrast with the more modern equivalent and (I think) still the house style of Chicago’s Transit Authority.
Alright, so this was a lot more fun than I expected. (Even though the weather is bad.)
Most beautiful steel bridge
I think that stack must have been shortened; the name of the street is Belmont.

A few photos for today that feel like photos from 50 years ago.
Forgot what it’s like to live somewhere where you can watch seasons fight with each other.
I have waited longer for this stupid shot than I am willing to admit.
Bricktown
Spring colours
God, I love this city
Yesterday, back in Chicago
It really does feel so different come spring
Look at this!

Squeak/Meow/Squeak/Squeak
I love this so, so much.
I am so obsessed with this stretch of the brown line, I just got there again today.
Not sure if you can tell, but the driver in the first photo was waving and honking at me. They always seem to enjoy this!
A moody, rainy Sunday
Stumbled upon the mythical Lower Lower Wacker Drive today. It exists below even the lower level of Wacker Dr, and apparently this is where impounded cars go. It’s more than a little spooky.
(Arguably, above is somewhat more beautiful.)
I am currently under two (2) trains.
Lincoln Park at sunset
Still my fav aesthetic of 2023
I am not sure if this is a good project or not, but it’s genuinely always exciting to see public transit improvements happening at scale.
As if to prove my point, I went for a walk at a different part of Chicago today, and I completely stumbled upon a new station being constructed! (Green Line, Lake and Damen)
The doors of the industrial district.
Cool rail infrastructure on a walk today.
Chicago’s mural game is so good. These are ones just from last week’s walks!
I know nothing beats the High Line, but Bloomingdale Trail feels much nicer to me than San Francisco’s ho-hum ribbon park in the sky.
I love these public transit L stories at the Armitage station. “It just makes me feel like part of the community riding [the subway] instead of riding in a car.”
@mwichary just received your book today! Thank you! Coincidentally your editor @glennf is a childhood friend of mine
@meganw6xav @mwichary It is a small world! 👋 It makes me happy to know these personal connections still drive everything!
@mwichary psh. I choose the utility of the 606 over the highline any day. It's like a warp zone for your bike.
@mwichary I loved graffiti in Chicago, crazy that spray paint is illegal over there.
@mwichary
Where's the moving bridge? Saw one this year in an old town but no one recorded any technical details about it, like how the hell to they manage cutting electrical lines etc...
@magnetic_tape There’s a million of those in Chicago! I think every one in the loop is a movable bridge.
@mwichary Great letters in that GUS. Might be Spanjer.
@typographica Yeah, the whole setup is beautiful.

@mwichary 🔈 Doors open on the right at Lake & Damen
@mwichary no joke, that station will be a pretty big deal. Would have loved one to be on Western but either way. I think it will support a lot of people!
@grumpasaurus Curious what made them skip so much coverage on that stretch of the Green Line to begin with?
@mwichary probably same reason for the long stretch in the south loop between Roosevelt and Archer: predominantly industrial zone at the time.
@grumpasaurus Ah, I’m also learning there used to be a station there originally, but it was closed in 1948 presumably for the reasons you’re stating.
@mwichary I also love the older CTA font for some reason; I think it's still up at one of the Oak Park stations.
@Zwieblein Tell me more!
@mwichary Not sure whether it's the green or blue line (or both!), but unless it's been changed recently with renovations, it's that same skinny-slanted font featured in the bottom right corner photo. I'm wondering whether I'm misremembering seeing it as well on one of the stations near Tri-Taylor/UIC.
@Zwieblein What is the font used for? The station name?
@mwichary Just that CTA logo on the side of an above-ground station house; the station name itself makes use of the same signage currently employed system-wide.
@Zwieblein Ah, thanks! I actually saw one today by the green line. Maybe that’s the one you meant
@mwichary Looks familiar! It's amazing how you pass by things so often, you cease paying attention—and then can't pin down exactly where that everyday thing is located!
@mwichary “Speak ‘Fren’ and Enter”
@mwichary I love that too. I was checking out this location on google maps. Didn't realize it was right under the brown line, which I also live near. I love watching the shadows it casts as the suns traverses. (Streetview image, since I don't have a good one of my own handy.)
@mwichary Omg I was telling my nephew & siblings about this tonight at dinner. I need to visit there, and also the Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Michigan.
@mwichary lake just east of Ashland?
@grumpasaurus No, this is the brown line in the North Center area!
@mwichary Somebody better think about the corrosion on those L tracks.
