To be fair, I feel like Reddit should *pay* @christianselig $20 million to help them improve their shitty app.

Apps like Apollo have made Reddit usable for millions of people. This is an idiotic move.

Reddit Quotes Extraordinarily High API Pricing to Apollo Developer

I’ve never used Reddit without a third-party app. For a while, that was Narwhal, and most recently, Apollo. Sure, I read Reddit in Safari once in a while when a Google search leads me there, but I’ve never used Reddit’s first-party app because it’s never been as good as third-party alternatives. In April, Reddit announced

@viticci @christianselig I’ll definitely not be using Reddit if Apollo goes away. It’s the best app available and has made Reddit feasible to browse for years. Crazy they want to charge that much for API usage.

@viticci @christianselig makes one wonder if Elon Musk just bought Reddit.

Still though, Tweetbot first. Now possibly Apollo. Sucks.

@viticci @christianselig deserves wildly generous rates/concessions or a blowout aqui-hire offer with the intent to replace the first-party app.

To just completely price completely Apollo out of existence would be so incredibly asinine I can’t imagine any non-Musk company doing it. Fingers crossed for you Christian!

@viticci This feels like some major déjà vu and it worked out soooooo well for the other platform. 🙃

@viticci @christianselig It's a great move if you want people to stop using Reddit. Which I will if this kills Apollo.

Sure, I'll come across it randomly in google searches from time to time, but I'll never go there on purpose.

@viticci @christianselig I’m done with #Reddit if they go through with this

@viticci @christianselig It is a completely disgusting move by reddit. To me Apollo is reddit. I don't even remember when I accessed the site in any other way.

I've been a reddit user for over 10 years and the direction in which the company is going gets more and more concerning everyday. It went from a cool site where nerds can talk about nerdy things to an ad-filled Facebook imitator.

@viticci Alien Blue was great and look at the abomination it has become after Reddit bought it. Some things are beyond saving.
@viticci @christianselig couldn’t agree more, apps like Apollo should be celebrated not demolished with idiotic moves

@viticci @christianselig

I really only started using reddit more regularly after discovering Apollo. Definitely a MUCH better experience.

@viticci @christianselig i don't know anything about apollo, whats it do?

though it also is clearly popular so i agree with everyone else about reddit shooting themselves in the foot

@strwbrryJen @viticci @christianselig
Apollo is an app that does everything Reddit should. Download videos and gifs, clean UI and interface, customisable etc. the official Reddit app is a cluttered mess.
@viticci @christianselig You’re half-joking, but since the Twitter fiasco and very much in this case, I believe the only fair thing those large companies should do if they decide to upend the living of partners who made their service drastically better, is to come up with a more than generous acquisition offer.
Don’t know if Christian or the largest Twitter devs would have accepted them, but “sorry I’ll buy you out if you want” sounds better than “f*** you”. 😡
@viticci @christianselig I used to visit Reddit every day but I stopped a few months ago. This development isn't helping.
@viticci @christianselig Thanks for covering this! And for exposing me to Christian’s mastodon handle.

@viticci @christianselig what would be a fair price for API access?

Estimated ad revenue pr user that accesses the service through the app?

Forced ad inclusion in app?

@viticci That is literally true for me. Their website has been unusable for years.

The smart move for them would be to acquire Apollo!

@viticci @christianselig @Migueldeicaza yet another thing destroyed by Elon. Twitter under him is VCs playground for how much they can get away with - and after confirming x/y/z is ok for users (all those people who stayed there), other companies follow.
@viticci I really have to disagree. I prefer the Reddit iOS app over Apollo.
Apollo looks really bad…
Reddit for iOS feels familiar and at home for casual users like me.
