so let's say a space marine's bolter jams

is he allowed to engage in a corrective procedure

would he even know how

rpg goal unlocked

*vibrates in escape velocity*

is the geck an stc

giving @DarkestKale fitful nightmares because i told him i dunno what white dwarf is

also that fallout 1/2 aren't anti-nuke

also robocop 1 is copaganda

deal with it and adjust your worldview accordingly

one of the best and worst things about fandoms are fan theories

getting really into a (relatively large) fandom shows you have false information spreads, and not just from bad actors

someone made an honest to fuck mistake in a wiki? now everyone parrots it. years later

youtube in a way has made it so much better but also so much worse

because so many streamers/youtubers make lore videos now, which is cool

but they're still human. they make mistakes. and a lot of them run mods while making lore videos lol

now, obviously i have a sci-fi bias. i like fallout

i am currently reading (and not liking tbh) 40k lore

so these settings are ostensibly grounded in real life physics and reality

so you also get to throw in the added problem of: authorities in lore who don't understand how shit works in real life

last night before i went to bed youtube recommended me a 40k video

because of course it did

it was a fairly well viewed video by a channel with like a quarter million subs trying to draw conclusions about space marine power armor in 40k to real life protective capability

except this guy presented his findings as well researched etc etc... and he couldn't even read a fucking plate level rating correctly

and even worse? part of this is due to MOAR VIDEO GAMES KNOWLEDGE

because gamers will just say "7.62" and infer meaning

except that if you don't know what the fuck you are talking about wrt context that could be a wide range of cartridges

that's why we call 7.62(mm) a caliber

do you mean:
7.62x17mm?
7.62x25mm? (which variant?)
7.62x29mm?
7.62x51mm? (nato?)

you also have loadings, barrels, etc etc

and of course, the video overestimates the strength of space marine protection

even the section where he tried to downplay space marine armor he sort of handwaved it with an image of an rpg-7... which can fire a bunch of different warheads

it's excessively funny, especially since given the fandom love of space marines, they have an associated love of the bolter - and the explosive power of that ammunition

this fucking pg-7vr tho? nah lol THAT AIN'T SHIT

oh you got a tiny ass bullet

that's real fukken cute

we got tandem explosives

one of the drawbacks of modern individual armor is backface deformation

what happens when you get hit but the plate does not hold to spec and the back side deforms so much, just shoving all the fucking material into your body, even if the bullet/shrapnel/whatever does not actually penetrate your deformed armor

what the fuck is your space marine gonna do if half his front plate gets concaved

"he's got three lungs"
yeah and all three of them just got crushed by a curved layer of magic space steel that's stronger than he is, supposedly

so he can't even bend it back out to breathe

he can't cut himself out of it

he's just gonna fall over and die lol

in other words, even tho you made your space marines magically hardy, and fire and acid resistant with multiple organ redundancies or whatever, basic physics can still smoke you, even without penetration

yeah i said it

this is also assuming the ablative sheathing over space marine armor isn't brittle to fuck (in lore it appears not to be) and then direct energy weapons or good old fashioned heat don't start to work their way in
anyway i am much more willing to hand wave away "space marines are magically hardy due to bioengineering" - as long as you don't try to explain it to me in scientific terms lol

if you wanna tell me "no, your average sm can bench press ten tons" or some shit fine whatever

the moment you start describing how a fucking solenoid in his left buttcheck powers his abdominal core we are gonna have problems

like bolters. the more i read about bolters the more mad i get because from an engineering standpoint they make no fucking sense

just tell me it's a fucking explosive auto pistol that only space marines can use and that's FINE

you don't need to start trying to ground it badly in physics that don't make any damn sense

i don't need to know how mjolnir fucking works

malifaux looks interesting but the uhhh wyrd site is not great

there are eight factions and no page where it just gives you an overview of all of them

you need to click through on them all

however unlike games workshop/40k at least they give you a small paragraph on what you actually need to play
also you can play as this lil guy
you can also click through and get some lore dump

i just wanna say: you don't HAVE to have one whole faction that is ASIAN MASHUP

you can just have different asian people throughout your factions

just sayin'

there's like two token white dudes in here tho lololol
Trying to do shit so I can finish my super mutant bases but adulting keeps blocking me
👊🏼
painting while waiting on the phone 🙃

I need a purple

Just a little

But bright

Me: "purple is blue and green right"

Me, five minutes later:

Honestly I feel like while this isn't good, the blue isn't nice and bright and glowy and the purple is bad, this is probably as good as my current skill (and paint) allows lol
If I wanted to be super spicy I could get a needle with pink/orange paint lol
Trying to work in blood puddles and green goo for the super mutant bases

Think I'm done (except varnish) for these

A lot of problems but moderate improvement from the deathclaw and mutant hounds xD

The mostly flat and featureless bases were... a challenge

tried to pool red/orange as blood, and the greens and fluorescent yellow as fev/generic mutant goo

came out... okayish? prolly coulda layered it more and used more of a wash to drain it into nooks and crannies

honestly i ended up liking the spilled quantum on dogmeat's base the most and i just slapped that shit on xD

i'm not 100% sure how i like the paint the rim of the raised terrain on bases - not the rim of the base, the terrain that goes right up against the cutoff of the base rim, above the actual base

i tried it 1) same color as the top terrain, 2) same color as the rim, and 3) what i thought might be a good terrain "internal" color

they all seem... fine?

i am not good at freehanding

the mottled shitty yellow on the curbsides does look like actual american curbs tho xD

but the streaks of off white/gray on the black pavement of the middle super mutant were supposed to represent a crosswalk and are totally not straight, even, parallel, etc

i think i should masked it with tape or used a stencil or something 🤔

yes the sledgehammer is bent

i tried to bend it the other way

it used to be more bent xD

i actually liked the middle (dual pistols) super mutant the least, unpainted

but after painting it i appreciated to wider, more open stance. made it easier to get my paintbrush up in that motherfucker, and i think the base came out the best of the super mutants

like dogmeat the most out of this batch, probably

could just be because dogmeat, the goodest boy, tho 🐕

also i dreaded having to detail TWO guns on one mini

but this was when i started drybrushing and i didn't even really need to two tone basecoat or anything

hitting it with brown and then swiping with that chainmail metal paint works super well and fits in the fallout universe

an orange rust look would prolly fit the aesthetic better, but i think the super mutants in fallout already read like a puddle of mud, color-wise, even in fo4

fo4 has a much better color palette compared to the older fallout games (LOL GREEN BROWN FILTER LOL), but fallout in general, probably because of the 2d iso roots, is super focused on silhouette readability, which i love

fo4 also does a fantastic job with enemy attack animations because there are so many but they blend so well you know exactly what is going on

unfortunately that readability in style is a bit lost in some of the minis

if they had an idle dogmeat throwing a chew toy teddy bear up into the air tho... lol yessssss

stylistically i do like fallout 1 quite a bit. it's visually interesting in a way fo2 actually is not (whole other thread)

and even they spring purple and yellow at you now and again

but 95% of it is still shades of brown. tan and brown, everywhere

i am sure a large part of it is just the resolution you played it on back then, versus upscaling to a giant monitor these days

also... crts

also because the perspective in fo1/2 was isometric you also had line of sight... mechanics

so darkening areas your character/party had no direct line of sight to could focus your attention. it mattered less that everything was a busy mess because your brain could ignore all the darkened areas

The final four minis from the warfare two player starter set

One zetan and three wastelanders

One of them is holding a stimpak! I think...

The other minis I ordered should be here on saturday

That zetan is the odd man out color-wise...
I might actually wanna wait on the alien until my white paint arrives...
me, idly wondering how hard it'd be to etch "fuck the emperor" on a space marine pauldron

i've been informed that orks are basically fungi 🍄🍄🍄

i will assemble the most ragtag group of renegade motherfuckers

yeah atm on team orks atm
"just let me die and turn into some spores"
oh 40k has space dwarves
i just feel like, given an alternative, you should not go around half naked in the 40k universe
y'all motherfuckers need to wear your helmets
space dwarf power armor looks way cooler than space marine power armor
there is a canon lore story of an ork named taktikus

people keep trying to tell me modern warhammer lore is crap and old stuff was better

anyhow i'm reading about the pervert class for dnd in the first issue of white dwarf this morning

aw yes a game based on starship troopers... the book

@worthlessbums well, yes, but also no

(but yes, technically they got brought back, but they're different now and less cool)

@worthlessbums old Squats were motorcycle riding awesomeness in quilt armour and leathers

New squats are just... Eh.

@DarkestKale i can't believe you're trying to tell me motorcycles with miniguns are less cool than wearing quilts
@DarkestKale the space dwarves have hoverbikes kale
@worthlessbums boring compared to the old stuff

@worthlessbums lukewarm at best. Zero faction flavour.

Pathetic.

@DarkestKale imma need to see the old stuff because what i googles was nowhere near this cool
@DarkestKale @worthlessbums the old style soace dwarves are in Necromunda. There was a schism apparently.
@worthlessbums
Bums: 'I have been informed...'
Kale: 'yes, by me, years ago...'
@DarkestKale you can't expect me to remember things that aren't fallout related
@worthlessbums so you've chosen Chaos, then
@DarkestKale wrong i've discovered renegade space marines
@worthlessbums aka Chaos

@DarkestKale expressly not chaos

you can be non-chaos renegade/heretic

@worthlessbums
Tzeentch: just as planned.
@DarkestKale don't know who that is, currently thinking about painting the civilization research flask icon on a pauldron

@DarkestKale also as a fallout crossover character i have no soul, which means i am basically a blank, meaning i can't be possessed and shit

enjoy

@worthlessbums I love how you went straight to weird specific 'varies by author' stuff and missed actually important shit, like, say, 'who are the Chaos Gods?'
@DarkestKale that's not important to my current dive!
@worthlessbums @DarkestKale as a Red Corsairs collector... yes to both of you :)
@kaynSD @worthlessbums So you've chosen Chaos, then
@DarkestKale @worthlessbums DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR
@kaynSD @worthlessbums
'Horus was just bad' vs
'Horus betrayed the Empire because he knows this is the only way to save it...' revisionism ahoy
