I’m in, if it isn’t terribly expensive, provides world class low latency and frame rate stability. In other words, I’m out.

Sony’s new Q handheld is official: 8-inch screen, streams PS5 games

Sony will launch “Project Q” later in 2023, a dedicated Remote Play handheld gaming device with an 8-inch screen made to stream games from your PlayStation 5 over Wi-Fi.

@paul I found PS4 remote play on a Vita to be very good, but only on the same LAN and not for games where timing was essential. That said, I’ve heard very good things about GeForce Now
@paul streaming using their iOS app is pretty unusable for me. Can’t see how this will be any different.
@paul Yeah, but why cripple it with just playing games over Wi-Fi? Why not make this a Vita that plays PS5 games
@davidjoz I think that’s called a steam deck. 😉
@paul Fair point.
@davidjoz no portable can play PS5-class games. I think people are in for an awakening next-gen when they’re expecting portables to play anything that demanding for more than thirty minutes.
@paul @davidjoz It’s not - you can't play PS5 exclusives on steam deck ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@paul I feel like Sony has kinda painted themselves into a corner.

People love the Switch, and it's a no brainer to dock it in front of a TV. But then you take it with you and you have the whole thing.

This is *such* a weird product. I'm not totally understanding the use-case. It's for PS5 owners who don't have exclusive use of the TV that it is hooked up to, but ALSO have an extra... $300-$400(?)

@gregvr I think price should be around half of what you have listed. If it’s good I wouldn’t mind having one to play while chilling in the backyard.

@paul Hmmm. I suppose if it breaks $200 with the fabled $199, then it feels a BIT different.

But I'm guessing $299…

It's much more interesting if it could handle some form of local play, as well, but maybe that comes later?

@gregvr @paul I dunno it’s that weird if you consider homes with fewer TVs than people. I can imagine a lot of younger couples where one person wants to watch tv and the other wants to play and they don’t have space to support a second screen.

@donw @paul That's a really good point!

My son is moving into an apartment next year with 3 other college students and we're wondering what they are going to do about a TV-- it's not even clear that they are going to WANT a TV (they are all moving from living in dorms)

Would work perfectly for him.

@paul Yhea if it was its own device I would be 100x in, but no...
@paul I’ve been surprised by how good GeForce Now is on a desktop with mouse/keyboard, but I can’t imagine replicating that experience on a handheld tablet equivalent. So… also out.

@paul iPhone + Backbone + Remote play is one of my favourite ways to play PS5

When the network isn’t garbage

@paul
The last time I saw a Q from Sony was in their WiFi lens-cams using smartphones as their display, DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100.
Sadly I don't think they're made anymore but I still have and love my QX10.
Regardless of whether the product is amazing or bewildering, innovation does mean sales flops sometimes. I'm not a gamer so I can't say about this particular product. Just thought the Q designation was interesting.
@paul as someone who uses steam remote play often this sounds good, although I don't own a PlayStation. I own a Steam Deck
@paul on smartphones and Vita it works great, so should be the same on this device.
