Jules@TheWerewolf @godpod dialectal difference: many people have "dude/dudes" as a friendly indeterminate gender noun, just as "guys" and "y'all" and "folks" can be indeterminate gender.

However, there is also a view that the use of a male term for males and females just reinforces a male-centric view and diminishes other genders.
In fact, in France, this issue has led some to propose new official pronouns like ille and the French are notoriously loathe to tinker with their language.
I just found the phrasing of "Diversity is the key, my dudes." and not "dudes and dudettes" amusing in that context.
