I stopped using Google on iOS because of AMP. Recently started using it again and about to stop because it keeps asking me to log in. Just show me what I’m searching for!
@paul
I much prefer search results from DuckDuckGo.
@jeber @paul I tried a few times and never got along with DuckDuckGo. I settled with startpage.com. I will try from time to time to give DuckDuckGo another shot. But now I’m off google since over a year.
@crisl_at @jeber @paul Same here… really wanted to like DDG, but went back to google pretty fast…

@paul Oh it won't do that even *if* you log in.

🫠

@paul I honestly don’t notice them asking anymore. It becomes second nature to just click “no” when I’m using it now.
@paul I broke down and bought StopTheMadness because I got tired of the SIWG prompts on otherwise 100% non-Google sites
@paul I also hate it when I open up gmail on a non-chrome browser, it keeps telling me to use chrome for a “better” experience. Ugh!
@paul DDG for general searching, then !g followed by the search if I need to lean on Google again has worked pretty well for me, but mileage will vary
@libraryvines @paul note btw that you can also type !g at the end of your query, which I often find easier.
@paul it’s SO ANNOYING. I hope they see bad results and cut that soon.
@paul you may already know this but there's a great safari extension called amplosion that automatically jumps to the article when you click an amp link, worth installing if you hate amp (as i do)
@paul maybe Kagi is for you? I used to use DuckDuckGo but gave Kagi a try and i really like it.
@paul There is/was a good iOS extension which removed AMP and turned them back into proper links. Wanted a bit much on a monthly basis though.
@paul someone the other day found a switch to turn off the prompt. I did it on Mac and forgot completely how before I could do it on my phone.
@paul that caused me to finally switch to Duck Duck Go. Not regretting it at all.
@paul I did my best to remove google from my life years ago. But if AMP is your biggest concern, @christianselig made Amplosion to deAMPify stuff.
@rrgeorge @paul @christianselig I will second this. Amplosion is fantastic.
@tashen @rrgeorge @paul Thanks haha. To be clear I think Paul is talking about something that is similar to AMP in its annoyingness, not AMP itself
@christianselig @rrgeorge @paul oh gosh. That’s what I get for not reading thoroughly enough. 😅
Google’s half-page pop-ups on iOS asking you to sign in literally while you’re scrolling search results, is definitely super annoying.

@tashen @christianselig @paul I did the same thing 😅

I stand by my Amplosion recommendation though.

@paul I’m using Neeva and gave done for the last 6 months. Much prefer it. No ads and your privacy/details not sold.
@paul I recommend Amplosion! It’s a Safari extension that redirects you to the real site
@paul Login pop ups or app pop ups are are worst. Reddit in a browser is a particular nightmare as well.

@paul I haven’t thought about AMP in years because of this extension https://apps.apple.com/us/app/amplosion-redirect-amp-links/id1585734696

Maybe worth a shot?

‎Amplosion: Redirect AMP Links

‎Amplosion automagically redirects AMP pages/links to their normal counterparts within Safari using an easy and elegant Safari extension. Activating it is super simple with just a few taps in the Settings app (full walkthrough in-app), and then you're good to go. Amplosion will automatically redire…

App Store
@paul I think AdGuard prevents that signin from showing up
@paul it’s so awful. The search results have degraded so much of late too, just full of fake sites full of cloned data and SEO nonsense
@paul DuckDuckGo is your friend 😊
@paul Absolutely! I keep trying duckduckgo, but kept coming back. However I've been quietly impressed by search.brave.com
@paul I’ve been paying for Kagi. I love it. Once you wrap your head around paying for search, it’s nice to not be the product. https://kagi.com/
Kagi Search - A Premium Search Engine

Better search results with no ads. Welcome to Kagi (pronounced kah-gee), a paid search engine that gives power back to the user.

@paul I want to switch to DDG or Brave but I feel like I’ll miss the local/maps results.
@developerjustin @paul I’ve been using primarily ddg for a while now and a while ago they added maps results that actually uses Apple Maps. I think google still has the edge for maps in general but usually the ddg results are pretty good. Ymmv, Apple Maps is pretty good where I live so I’m sure that helps.
@jph I actually do use Apple Maps for navigation when I’m driving if I know where I’m going but it’s always hit or miss for me here when searching for something new. I feel like I mostly get those results from Siri now anyway though, so I probably could jump and it be fine.
@paul Perplexity.AI is a wonderful replacement.
@paul Been using DuckDuckGo for years now, Google feels odd to use due to the distractions around the search results.
@paul agreed! Anyway to make it stop aside from trashing Google search?
