My main selling point to try and bring my blind friends to Mastodon from Twitter is people using alt text. I know I never claimed everyone did it all the time, but still, please don't make me look like a liar! #AltText
Not that it's really been working. I mean the persuading. But still, alt text is important!
@Fragglemuppet Some instances have rules about ensuring people use alt text too, so the amounts of people using them in those instances are higher. Could potentially steer them toward one of those so there's a better selection of thoughtful peeps first up?
@Fragglemuppet I’ve had a problem using the detect text feature. It doesn’t work. Is it because I’m using #MetaText? #alttext
Also a reminder that if you don't use it, many of us just won't boost it. #AltText

@Fragglemuppet no one should be boosting pictures without #AltText! It's antisocial and ableist, even if it's unintentional.

Not to demonize new people who haven't figured out the etiquette around here: better to educate than to slam them, of course.

@Fragglemuppet
The reminders are working for some of us.
And the not so subtle UI which gently encourages AltText

#alttext

@Fragglemuppet

hey Fraggle, I am much aware of not boosting images without descriptions, mainly because of VI tooters like you. Really appreciate your sensible input. I see much more alt-text on my home feed, and I hope you are experiencing the same.

@CrowquillGal Oh, I am, thanks! But still I feel the need to remind people sometimes, especially with a lot of new people coming in.

@Fragglemuppet

OH GOOD! 😁

and yes, with new users on board, we gotta keep the convo going!

@Fragglemuppet It's something I've gotten way more conscious of since I left Twitter. I always add alt text to my images and generally I won't boost stuff that doesn't have it.
@4gottenfuturist @Fragglemuppet Sometimes I'll reply to a good image without alt text, reposting it with alt text (and hashtags) so it's more accessible and discoverable.
@Fragglemuppet I try to do this on every post 🙂

@Fragglemuppet there are bots that can remind you if you forget to add alt text. Here’s one:

@alt_text

@MattFerrel
Depending on the app you use, it can remind you too. I use Fedilab, and it has a setting where the app will confirm with you before you post an image without a description. There's also a setting that confirms before you boost a post with an image with no alt text. It's only on Android, but it's possible other apps have these features too!
@Fragglemuppet
@Fragglemuppet Is there a preferred way to handle descriptions of colours or patterns? Or even just, what are some things people describe in Alt that's not useful?
@Fragglemuppet Can I ask what tool you use to play your alt text to you in audio?
@Fragglemuppet Thank you for the reminder? I'm trying to get better at this.
@Fragglemuppet I'm working wicked hard to do a good job on those! I didn't have any blind friends on supernatural twitter but I have some now! <3 <3 <3
@Fragglemuppet I'm trying to be more descriptive with mine. ❤️
@Fragglemuppet Happy birthday a month ago!
@Fragglemuppet I have been doing very well remembering to do alt text on here. Even better, if I do forget, I can edit the post and add it in!
@Fragglemuppet @Gargron maybe if user profile “scored” the poster based on % posts with (significant?) A11Y description?
@Fragglemuppet
I do it! Every time. 👍😊 And I post lots of pix. Happy to give everyone the chance to 'see' what I'm posting. Plus I sometimes add Easter eggs to my descriptions. 😜
@Fragglemuppet Complain to AI companies for image-to-text not being more widely available and implemented, not to people who have other things going on in their lives and can't justify taking time to write essays for their images to benefit the <1% of people who need them.
@Fragglemuppet I’m pretty good about doing this, and an interesting thing I’ve noticed is that sometimes when I’m describing the image, I add a little nuance in my text about something that might not be easily noticed by a casual viewer. So I feel like doing altText is sometimes a value add…
@Fragglemuppet Maybe you should explain how #AltText helps blind users? Thanks!

@Fragglemuppet

And with edit, people often add a third party's alt text to the image as well.

#alttext

@Fragglemuppet Has other benefits too. If it hadn't been for the Alt Text awareness on Mastodon, I wouldn't have known to implement it more usefully on my personal web site.

Unfortunately, there are various guides out there where Alt Text is principally viewed as a place for search engine optimisation.

@Fragglemuppet I agree that Alt-Text is very important! I always add it when I post images. But how can you tell if someone else added alt text before boosting a post?
@sugarblush depends on your client. fedilab actually warns me if i try to boost something missing alt text. otherwise just check for alt text (showing alt text is done differently in different clients)
@Fragglemuppet

I just had a thought that only seemed to be funny because I'm still a little loopy.

Life is the hardest thing you'll ever do in life.

@tarajdactyl
Ah I see, thank you! On my PC I can view an image's alt-text by hovering over it with my mouse, but I'm not sure how to recreate this when on mobile. (I use a Progressive Web App on Firefox)
@Fragglemuppet
@sugarblush @Fragglemuppet on Android at least, i can long press on a picture and it shows the alt text (in firefox webapp)
@tarajdactyl @Fragglemuppet
This works for me too, thank you very much!! :D
