Banned books, by topic (July 2021 to June 2022)
@juddlegum Almost as if they’re trying to erase LGTBQ+ folks and people of color.

@juddlegum

I would like to ban any book that mentions Jesus, Christianity or any kind of God. I don't want my kids indoctrinated.

... two can play at this game.

@juddlegum
Oh, for a minute I thought that was a graph showing the number of times each of those things is mentioned in the Bible.
@juddlegum what is the scope of the data? USA or global?

@stacemo @juddlegum

Yeah, i was wondering what country too. Iraq? Saudia Arabia? China?

But looks like it is that great advocate of freespeech, once called the "land of the free", the USA

It's just so crazy

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Facebook, Telegraph, Truth Social people can say anything they want because of Section 230 of the Communication Decency Act 🙄

@peteo @juddlegum thanks! I figured as it was PEN America.
@juddlegum It doesn't take a data scientist to tell there are trends in that data. Category 1: Not straight white characters"
Category 2: Topics parents don't want to talk about
Category 3: Messy history
Category 4: Happy Holidays

@juddlegum

I'm an Indie Author. I writer mysteries and thrillers. No books should be banned - ever. People should be free to read what they want. Yes there should be Parental Control on what children read. Otherwise no book should be banned.

@Amelia1 @juddlegum

We don't know what people believe, and we largely don't care. But, if we leave the raising of our Nation's children to the very government we largely speak out against then there is something seriously wrong with the "morality" of our generation.

I agree that certain reading material should be kept at age appropriate levels in schools. Like "Fifty Shades" the book shouldn't be in elementary schools but that doesn't mean it should be banned. Banned books equals censorship.

@juddlegum you really have to wonder what they're so scared of!

@juddlegum

“OK, so today I got pulled into a ‘check-in meeting’ with my administrator at school, and she had this lovely list of concerns...

Included in the list is the concern that Sophie is “intentionally” teaching her third-grade students about their rights.

“But my favorite amongst them is, ‘We’ve noticed an intentional attempt at teaching your students about their legal and constitutional rights.’ That’s the concern,”

@juddlegum So horrifying. I feel like we're living in The Handmaid's Tale.
@juddlegum I miss the good old days when they banned books for promoting witchcraft.

@juddlegum I'm trying to figure out: when they say things are banned for "themes of rights and activism", whose rights or what topics of activism would those be, if not the aforementioned LGBTQ+ people or PoC?

I can think of some, but I wonder if there are tons of books about environmental activism or handicapped rights that are being banned?

Anyway, I can speculate, but I'm curious what's actually in that 5th category.

@juddlegum On the not-even-hiding-it-anymore front, in our county, the book review committee has a new member -- the former local Moms for Liberty chair who herself submitted 90% of the challenges.

Honestly more brazen than I would have expected, but then there's a board member's proudly displayed drinkware at the most recent meeting.

@juddlegum

And that damned Bible; rape, incest, murder, transgressions in all kinds, criminal activities, that book is just a list of sinful Acts
