Blue wave? 2025 off-year elections in the former United States: false hope, and the ballad of a dying democracy. {Stop the Idiocracy 7 November} https://stoptheidiocracy2020s.blogspot.com/2025/11/blue-wave-2025-off-year-elections-in.html

I just wanted to say that I stand by my assessment that the fediverse is technocratic and elitist.

It looks like I am going to be focusing more on Bluesky as my "home" on social media. The Fediverse isn't working for me right now, and I need a space that would be welcoming to my family and close friends. I need a less elitist space where people can talk freely about shopping at Walmart and eating tacos for lunch without it leading to an ethics symposium. If anyone here is also on Bluesky, I am at: https://bsky.app/profile/meowthias.bsky.social

To those of you who have actually engaged with me over the past 3 years, I want to express my sincerest appreciation. My wish for myself and all of you is that life brings us all experiences more exciting than a plate of steamed vegetables. Either way, I will be seeking out spaces where it is OK to post that image without worrying about offending someone. Today I will be leaving this wasteland of parallel play behind, and will be logging out with no plans to return.

Sincerely,
Matthias

I have encountered some thoughtful and kind people in the Fediverse, and have appreciated the kindnesses I have been shown. Unfortunately, the prevailing atmosphere of elitism and gatekeeping make it very hard for me to imagine any of my real-life family or friends ever creating an account on a Fediverse instance. No one I know IRL would ever feel at home here. To be honest, I have never really felt at home here, either.
I have watched as AOL was replaced by Livejournal, which was replaced by Myspace, which was replaced by Facebook, which was then replaced by Twitter. I often used these social networks to try to feel connected while I was separated from family and friends while living in far-flung parts of the American West. Looking back, each step in this chain just isolated me more and more. The Fediverse is by far the loneliest and most disjointed experience since I first logged onto AOL in 1996.
I have also struggled with the degree to which I feel compelled to self-edit. There is a culture of performative etiquette here that causes me to delete posts before publishing. Should I put an image of steamed vegetables under a content warning, or should I just not post it at all because such potentially dangerous content might offend someone's sensibilities? I often feel like an uninvited guest in someone else's hyper-curated living room here.
When I first migrated to the Fediverse in November of ‘22, I was intrigued by the idea of decentralized social media. Unfortunately, over time, my experience here has become increasingly exhausting. My feed often seems to be filled with technical content I don't understand and never asked for, and my efforts to stem the tide with filters has been mostly unsuccessful.

I spent an hour yesterday working with one student. She was scared of the soldering iron. "Do your parents let you use the stove at home? It could burn you too, right? But we understand how to be safe and it's not a problem."

She did a beautiful job on her project and learned the names of many parts and learned that she can be scared to do something but still be extremely successful.

This is only really possible because my classes are small. If I need to work with a student I can do it.
