Oh nice. Seattle Public Library has created a membership type for "13 to 26 year olds anywhere in the US" to be able to sign out e and audiobooks as a response to those locales banning books...

Books Unbanned

Teens and young adults ages 13 to 26 living anywhere in the U.S. can access our entire collection of e-books and audiobooks.

@KovuCougar sending this to my nieces and nephews who live in the South!!

@KovuCougar

Archive .org tried to do this with books and they lost the court case. :(

@jebba Archive.org was lending out books they scanned. SPL is following the publisher license model.

Though I totally agree the archive.org court case was completely misruled. Format shifting should in no way be illegal.

@jebba @KovuCougar They did not have permission from the publishers = they violated copyright. There was no other way that case was going to end. It was theft of intellectual property. You may be okay with that, but authors have to get paid and this is how that happens.
@KovuCougar
Book banning is the mark of failed government.
@KovuCougar @stonebear now that’s some based ball busting.
@Aminorjourney @KovuCougar TBH, Brooklyn did it first, but the more the merrier, and it sure is a direct πŸ–• to the banners...
@KovuCougar SO awesome!!! Book warriors!! πŸ₯³ πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ™Œ πŸ“š πŸ’œ
@KovuCougar I love it, Brooklyn pub lib has also done this!
@KovuCougar Indeed this is great! Book banning is a move straight out of the fascist playbook.

@KovuCougar have you checked out www.openlibrary.org?

It kicks the normal library's butt.

@KovuCougar
This is wonderful.

There's also Archive.org & OpenLibrary.org. They're sibling websites, so one (anonymous, if you want) account provides access to both sites. They have curated lists of banned books too.

I use them for teaching daily, and I'm looking forward to checking out the Seattle library site. Thank you!

@Jeramee @KovuCougar Me, too, especially for free access to books about Chief Seattle.
@KovuCougar
Cool! So now there's at least one remote library on each coast - Brooklyn, NY & Seattle, WA - I'm sure there'll be many more. Such a wonderful solution.
@KovuCougar When will libraries have to work with communities to support privacy tools in order to insure people continue to have the ability to access knowledge? https://www.torproject.org/download/

@KovuCougar

While I don't post much over on FB. I made sure to spread this link over there as well.

Availability of knowledge should never be censored. Especially to youth.

Edit: Also, has anyone documented all the books of late being banned? Seems I need to be expanding my physical collection of books of late.

@KovuCougar I love when people find ways to use this weird tech age for good.
@KovuCougar Thanks for tooting this important info!
@KovuCougar why 26? If they're going beyond undergraduate age, why stop there? Extend to all ages. Brooklyn restricted it to teens iirc.

@KovuCougar Brooklyn Public Library has been doing this for a while through a program called "Books Unbanned."

@KovuCougar this sounds cool, but i wish it wasn't limited for an age range!
@KovuCougar That's awesome. Brooklyn Public Library has also been making its digital collections available nationwide to youth as well.
@KovuCougar Super glad this exists. I wish I were under 26 now :)
