Kid2’s boyfriend — a very nice young man - recognized the computer game I was playing (a ludicrously overcomplicated strategy game called Europa Universalis IV) and we had a brief conversation about it and I could see her dying a little inside.
@Popehat [kid's date delayed indefinitely as Dad and boyfriend bond over Dwarf Fortress minutiae]
@Popehat I'm more of a Crusader Kings guy myself but respect.
@thealexknapp @Popehat Crusader Kings discussion might have veered to Topics that would have caused kid2 to die a lot more inside.
@JiSe @Popehat Who among us hasn't created a medieval European religion with mandatory cannibalism?
@thealexknapp @JiSe @Popehat in all fairness, mandatory cannibalism sounds like a great band name as well
@husbandpanda That would be a great name!
@thealexknapp @Popehat I play Cities Skylines and pieces of the soundtracks for both EU IV and CK II are in it.
@Popehat One of my kid’s friends was fascinated with some 1970s concert footage I was watching. Same cringe factor for my kid.
@Popehat Reminds me of the Pixar short with Riley's dad and boyfriend bonding over rock and roll. 🎸 🤘 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4941804/

IMDb
@Popehat: "A very nice young man"
Kid2: I've made a terrible mistake.
@Popehat See what they think of Dwarf Fortress or Aurora 4X. :)
@Popehat Ken be like

@ZeirosLion @Popehat imagining like a less violent version of this

(Fun fact: when I was young, dumb, and full of Ritz crackers, I thought the roads and bridges were exploding because he was blowing them up in retribution. If only.)

@Popehat bf oblivious that he's signing his own dump warrant.

@Popehat

A father's work is NEVER done ;)

@Popehat This is now my favorite "I embarrassed my kids" story. Not just of yours, of all time.

@Popehat

him: ‘what level are you in this?’

you: ‘Hat’

him: ‘wut’

@Popehat yup best advice I had when first daughter was 2 or so. Co-worker, mom, said “if they get a boyfriend, become a friend to him, make sure they like you. Then they won’t do anything. I hated it.” :-) - so always treated their friends w/ respect and I became the “cool dad” lol
@Popehat
Back when my now-wife and I were first dating, we went to a gathering at her uncle's house, where I made a nerdy reference to a television show only he and I recognized and he lit up with joy and recited the next couple of lines, and both my now-wife and her uncle's wife spent the rest of the night apologizing for him getting so drunk he started spouting complete nonsense at me.
@Popehat Clearly a more in-depth series of concersations need to be had.
@Popehat I was that nice young man once talking to my future father in law about Civilization V.
@Popehat I’m filing this away as a life goal for my 2yo.

@Popehat EUIV is cool.

Only semi-related, but I do want a game that has a diplomacy system like the one in Space Empires V though, but with AI that actually uses it properly. It specifically let you say things like "remove your military from this territory because x, y, z" or "stop spying on our research facilities" or "stop trading with x because reasons" or whatever.

@Popehat Hmm would this be something that’s akin to the Civ series? Always been a fan of games that are more strategic, slow-building in nature. Does this tack in that direction?
@Popehat I look forward to moments like this as my kids get older and hit dating age.

@Popehat One day she will be glad when you and her partner have things in common to talk about.

That day is not anytime soon.

@Popehat Speaking of ludicrously overcomplicated strategy games, have you looked in on Stellaris lately?
@Popehat Don't allow a Crusader Kings player to marry into the dynasty, else he'll start plotting to accelerate the inheritance of your titles.
@Popehat Be kind to Kid2. She has just learned the cruel truth that she will never be free from cringe -1 Stability jokes.
@Popehat Establish dominance. Find out how horrific his Crusader King's dynasty turned out. Nothing says more about a person's character like managing a Incestuous Horse Marriage crisis.
@Popehat
And kid3 who I believe is on here just saw this, told her older sis that dad just told the world she's dating "a very nice young man". Kid2 has subsequently dumped the boyfriend, and entered witness protection.
@Popehat now that’s an EU I can get behind.

@Popehat

You can imagine how annoyed my kid got when a number of their friends friended me on Steam as a joke.

@Popehat Embarassing your children. Dad Goals!
@Popehat my ex hated when i bonded with his dad over technology. the best
@Popehat imagine playing that game using a fold out map and cardboard counters in 1994. I don't think I made it through one turn. Love the computer game, though.
@Popehat Did you buy dominion? Or are you a wait and see kind of DLC guy?
@Popehat I own that, but AI haven't had the cojones to install it yet, due to potential for relationship backlash.
@Popehat The 'dad approval' test now is to find out if he plays HoI4
@Popehat An EU4 fan? She found a keeper…. depending on his opinions on how to handle Castile.
@Popehat get him on a future date to pull a prank on Kid2 by dressing exactly like you that day.

@Popehat okay I’ve heard you talk about this game for years at this point and I’m finally biting the bullet and buying it.

Now accepting luck, blessings, and advice. No idea what I’m in for.

@jaymerryfield You can buy a $5/month subscription to use all of the DLC.

Warning: extreme learning curve. Start as Portugal.

@Popehat appreciate the advice! Enjoying a beer and working through the tutorial now. It’s a lot!
@jaymerryfield It is a lot. Don’t be afraid to restart a lot after you’ve figured things out. It rewards patience.
@jaymerryfield @Popehat Paradox grand strategy game tutorials are pretty bad. If it’s not clicking, try watching a Let’s Play on YouTube for a while. That’s how I figured out CK2.
@LawZag @Popehat thanks! I’ll do some searching tonight and see what I can find. I am flailing for the most part right now (in a good way) so I’m sure that’ll help.
@Popehat That's not overcomplicated!
@Popehat At least you aren't using your children as pawns in CK.
@Popehat
Well done ! - You may now proceed to the next level...
@Popehat Ayyy fellow Paradox game enjoyer! Didn't get much playtime into EUIV myself, but CK II and HOIIV I have plenty.
