The obvious next step for Twitter is to announce that if you subscribe to Blue no one will be able to block you
@caseynewton given Elon's penchant for telling people to wipe their blocklists, I wouldn't be surprised
@caseynewton I think that would truly doom Twitter for a lot of folks, but I also think it’s very possible.
@caseynewton god the worst part is that probably is an option they're currently weighing up
@caseynewton The amount of harassment that would enable would be unprecedented.
@caseynewton I’ve been waiting for “only Blue subscribers can have 🔒 accounts”.
@caseynewton Frankly that should be Twitter Iron Shield.
@caseynewton i said this a while ago, someone replied saying the next step could be to prevent people from blocking at all unless they subscribe to blue
@caseynewton Not the Blue, but the upcoming Platinum Blue, which will cost $29.99/month and you give you either immunity to blocking, or a remove-block feature.
@caseynewton Also, muting phrases could be another subscription
@caseynewton And the biggest reason why this might happen, is because Elon probably HATES that so many people block him.
@caseynewton Until they create their Blue+ (Ultraviolet?) tier, to enable the blocking of mere Blues...
@caseynewton I think Musk may recognize some of the value of blocking, so I think it's more likely that they would say only people who subscribe to Blue will be able to block others. If you don't have Blue, you gotta see everyone. But that's me assuming they would make a logical decision.

@caseynewton

Oh you know Elon had engineers working on that this weekend.

My other thought was that Elon might opt to limit the number of people you can block per day on normal accounts. Say like 10/day but unlimited for Twitter Blue.

@caseynewton

Do not give Elon any ideas.

@caseynewton Or make blocking a Twitter Blue only feature.
@caseynewton Freedom of speech, beat 'em with reach.
@caseynewton You’re joking, but honestly I can see it happening.
@caseynewton I was thinking more along the lines of the blocking feature being taken away from free and moved to Blue. Seems to fit perfectly with Musk's idiocy.
@caseynewton sealing its position as incel of the internet
@caseynewton Paraphrasing Douglas Adams (RIP) here: "There is a theory that this has already happened."
@caseynewton OK, here's a nightmare scenario "next step." Musk appoints Tucker Carlson as Twitter's new CEO!
@caseynewton Then he can charge $16/month for SuperBlock™️ to block Twitter Blue subscribers!
@caseynewton this would be fun and crazy at the same time 🤣.

@caseynewton

LOL. Sounds like something Elmo would come up with.

@caseynewton This is the logical next step. I think they should also allow you to promote other people's tweets! Just like Blaze on Tumblr. Let the chaos run wild!!!
@caseynewton They are going to make blocking a feature that is only available to Twitter Blue subscribers.
@caseynewton Using the API access of my last remaining Twitter app, I've blocked 40-million of Elon's 130-million followers. I don't know how far I'll get before the lights go out, but I'm heading there at about 30 blocks per second.
@caseynewton You really are like the Nostradamus of #tech — accurate yet slightly daunting predictions!
@caseynewton I thought Elon was takin the blue checks lol

@caseynewton

The blue checkmark is rightly rejected by any truly verified source, when anyone else can pretend to be just as much you, as you yourself, by just purchasing their own check and aliasing your account within a letter or two.

The blue check has made itself an absolute joke. Twitter is in fact now a cuckoo bird, plopping its progeny upon the media as a whole.

@caseynewton please, the product genius has had enough ideas
@caseynewton this sounds like a silly thing you’d say as a joke and then suddenly see it become reality
@caseynewton if you didn't talk about twitter for a week or so, what can we learn about that is interesting?
@caseynewton shhhhhhhhhhhh don't give the manchild any ideas
@caseynewton No - that is only for the Ultramarine subscription. Maybe $1000 a month?
@caseynewton that would be the last straw. I’d delete my account.
@caseynewton One of my last popular tweets said the same thing, along with people being forced to auto-follow you if Musk decided he wanted to promote somebody.
@caseynewton it’s sad to think that, while Twitter was far from perfect, there were good intentions and hard work to improve going on until Elon moved in with his sink and pulled the plug on all the good stuff and sacked most of the software engineers. Now twitter is getting worse and will likely fall apart sooner than later. Elon goes from one bad idea to the next, he’s clueless. Having “see half the ads” as a selling point for blue is really all you need to know

@caseynewton

The obvious next step for Twitter users is to leave

@caseynewton I am sure there was already a thought (or similar :) about it)
