When disclosing your autism (to someone who is surprised), there's a big difference between "Ooh! Now I can understand your reactions better," or "Ooh! Now I get you!" and "Ooh! Thaaat's what's wrong with you."

@hmm_cook
But none of them are as bad as "Ooh! I'm so sorry."
@Pathfinder And I'm so sorry you got the boring standard model brain. /sarc
@hmm_cook
I'm so nicking that come back. 😊
@hmm_cook I’ve mainly got the last one. That and when people have asked my dad what is wrong with me and he explained I’m autistic, they said “hmm that explains a lot.”
@ashleyspencer Sorry for that. And...does it explain a lot? /gen
@hmm_cook I just suck at masking. I can’t pretend to be neurotypical no matter how hard I try. It’s very obvious that I’m not.
@ashleyspencer That's okay! Despite what many people may have told you over the years.
@hmm_cook I get either "No, you can't be autistic" or else "Well, duh. I could have told you that."

@hmm_cook

I think I would prefer any of those to "I don't believe you, you don't seem autistic" or "Everybody is a little bit autistic".

I guess after living many years, I'm so good at masking that people don't believe me, even though I have an official diagnosis which their tax money helped pay for 😂

Only once has somebody asked me if I have any diagnosis of some sort, which planted the seed in my mind that it might be a good idea to get it checked.

@morten No matter what other people think, you know yourself best.
