When someone disagrees with you online & demands you prove your point to their satisfaction by writing a logically sound defense, u can save a lot of time by not doing that.

Dude, I've known u for ten seconds & enjoyed none of them, I'm not taking homework assignments from you.

@iammarsalis πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

@iammarsalis Those who make the claim are responsible for backing it up.

It's certainly not on everyone else to prove someone's bullshit wrong. A little. <citation needed> now & again is healthy skepticism in action.

@allenstenhaus

Sure. BUT if you're disputing the claim:

Racism exists in America and this is how it manifests

Or

This is how optics works at the horizon due to the curvature of the earth

Then you, the person, "disputing" that claim are actually making a claim.

By disputing it, you're making an absolutely wild claim, I.e.

Racism does not exist in America
Or
The earth is flat.

Thus the burden lies with you. Bet you $10 that's what OP means. πŸ˜€

@iammarsalis

@Homebrewandhacking @iammarsalis I was agreeing with OP.
@allenstenhaus @Homebrewandhacking @iammarsalis
Actually "if you make a claim you need to back it up" is in itself a claim.
@realn2s @allenstenhaus @Homebrewandhacking @iammarsalis True, the correct way of phrasing it is "If you make a claim and don't back it up, don't act surprised or insulted if reasonable people dismiss your claim out of hand"
@allenstenhaus @iammarsalis right wingers don't read citation. They make us produce it but do not read it or watch the videos. There is absolutely no point in engaging in bad faith arguments ever

@smollestbunny @iammarsalis I don't tend to argue with people like that. I'll make my statement, typically backed up with a reputable source, & that's that. Once I can tell they're not about to hear anything other than what they want to hear, I simply remain silent & save my energy.

But at least online, I will make that first rebuttal. It's not generally for them, but for everyone else paying attention.

@iammarsalis it's my experience that, nine times out of 9, they think Alex Jones is a credible source so I agree with you.
@iammarsalis 🀣🀣🀣
@iammarsalis
My fav is when they demand you cite sources for your facts. Dude, go look it the f up yourself. I'm not your editor. The world wide web is there for all of us.
@MHowell @iammarsalis Let Me Google That For You is a fine tool to use in such rebuttals.
@eyrea @MHowell @iammarsalis I sent LMGTFY links at work. or ask if there's a PBKAC

@TheSpaniard @eyrea @iammarsalis
I used to crab to my boss that Someone has to look it up, and Someone didn't always have to be me.

She replied that I was so fast. Learned skill. Learn it, everyone else on the team.

@MHowell @TheSpaniard @iammarsalis At an old job I got in trouble for offering lunch & learns for anyone missing Word skills. The whole team worked in Word all day. Sigh.
@eyrea @MHowell @iammarsalis I've been at 3 different places where I had the "privilege" of teaching people Excel. Which they should have known.
@eyrea @TheSpaniard @iammarsalis
I produced training docs for the team in a widely-used software that had extensive training that no one "had time to do." So much easier and time-sensitive to send me an email and have me do the research for them!
@MHowell @eyrea @iammarsalis I honestly should have taken the job offer from our SAP consultant when they offered me a fat check to travel and teach. I spent so much time teaching in my job, I got written up for spending too much time on it.
@TheSpaniard @MHowell @iammarsalis "written up" for teaching skills *facepalm*
@eyrea @MHowell @iammarsalis that was the day I started looking for another job.
@TheSpaniard @eyrea @iammarsalis
I am 62, My career advice:
- They may "love" your work, but will cut you loose in a nanosecond if it helps their bottom line. Loyalty and going above and beyond will not be rewarded.
- Change companies every 5-7 yrs. If not, you will never move up/get a decent raise, & without significant promotions you will be marked as a loser.
- You are old & useless once you turn 50, so consolidate your professional and financial position before you hit the magic number.
@TheSpaniard @eyrea @iammarsalis
I can already see you are a good communicator. As a kid/young adult, I used to think that most people could teach someone else a skill, but now I realize that it's a relatively rare talent, when well done.
@MHowell @iammarsalis this one is especially fabulous when you TOLD them in your reply where to get the info.
@iammarsalis Then they continue to aggressively badger you with questions that could easily be answered in a Google search...it’s just a way for bored trolls to try compare egos and waste everyone’s time, causing drama instead of having a healthy discussion.
@MOULE @iammarsalis that's called JAQing off. Just Ask Questions
*occasionally* I may hit 'em with the lmgtfy
@iammarsalis Thank you for this, I will hang it on my wall as my daily affirmation
@iammarsalis Like, who even needs evidence when you have your instincts πŸ™„

@iammarsalis

Oh, this is good. I like it immensely.

@iammarsalis Someone once posted, "I don't owe you a debate about things that are objectively true." A very useful guidance.
@iammarsalis That's almost verbatim how I've been known to respond to that kind of demands 😝
@iammarsalis  I don't agree at all. Show me reliable proof (now!) for such a bold claim – or – you are wrong.
@iammarsalis martin luther shaves his head and becomse buddhist
@iammarsalis Will the person who asked for this homework judge it objectively? No. Almost never. So, yes, don't bother…
@iammarsalis
There's also a mute option
@iammarsalis filed away in "lessons I learn for at least an hour then forget again once I'm back on Twitter"

@iammarsalis Granting that I'm a white guy, so the social calculus of being blunt is different for me, but I get a lot of mileage out of telling them that my time will cost them a hundred bucks an hour, twice that if they insist on being a jackass about it.

They'll never pay up, of course, but some kid in the comments will hopefully realize that their time matters, too.

@iammarsalis I usually hand people the rope to hang themselves. I let them make their own argument and get stuck.
@iammarsalis @StefanThinks β€œLet me think long and no about that.”
@iammarsalis
That will earn them a mute and a block if the fool tries that with me.

@iammarsalis

I would like to print this post out and laminate it.

*Thank you.*

@iammarsalis block, block, block. Your ignorance and toxicity is not my responsibility.
@iammarsalis The kind of people who’re eager to write a short essay in your replies always seem to believe that everyone else is just as preachy. Like, my guy, I’m not here to debate randos.
@iammarsalis thank God, some common sense
@iammarsalis @Miriamm Agreed! There's a huge difference between a dialogue and someone being an asshat. While I certainly don't mind discussing why I feel a certain way logically and calmly. I don't respond to demands. That's why I prefer Mastodon. Much calmer, nice discussion with a wide range of personalities. The other site was painful to even lurk on with all the animosity without regard to differing points of view.
@iammarsalis This seems to be the default for lots of people anyway.
@iammarsalis My go-to sentence here is "I don't owe you a debate"
@iammarsalis You can't prove consciousness to another.

@iammarsalis Not only that, this is a form of harassment known as "sealioning", and its primary objective is to emotionally exhaust minorities.

If you encounter this type of crap when discussing online racism, homophobia, fatphobia, or ableism, feel free to report it to your admin.

It does not have to be explicitly racist. Just add "sealioning" or "harassment" in the report description, even if it's the user's first and only visible post. Harassers often wipe their post history precisely to keep doing this.

@iammarsalis Hell yeah. I've even declined to do that with multiple family members when they were clearly "just asking questions."
@iammarsalis Bloody sea lions. Bane of my existence :)
