Even hardcore Twitter types noticing the decline in timeline activity there. Social networks, like all social activities, can flip rapidly from FOMO (fear of missing out) to FOBS (fear of being seen). Twitter is very close to doing that FOMO→FOBS engagement flip.
@paul yup. Uninstalled the app after the NPR decision.

@paul @mmasnick as surely the most "hardcore" *original* Twitter type. (I built my whole adult social life on Twitter starting in 2009 and culminating in a list of ~200 folks that replaced my timeline, entirely, and contain my whole heart.)

you could say I noticed a decline in the sort of timeline activity I was there for *acutely* as the year 2017 began.

(the recently published outline of Twitter's anti-discovery mechanisms were a very fast and like painfully euphoric explanation.)

@mmasnick
Some of us are indeed old enough to remember MySpace ;)

@paul It does not matter, they just need to hook Musk's feed to about 40 mil GPT bots set on fawning mode. He is definitely willing to pay $44 Bil to get simulacra of approval.

I would be kind of surprised if they are not surreptitiously doing something like that already. All he wants is a lot of slavishly doting comments to make up for his childhood.

@rrb @paul

I met a new word today..

plural noun:
SIMULACRA
an image or representation of someone or something.
"a small-scale simulacrum of a skyscraper"
an unsatisfactory imitation or substitute.
"a bland simulacrum of American soul music"

@Helderweb @paul You are we!come. Now read some Baudrillard to blow our mind.
@paul thanks for the acronym! I had thought FOBS was just a normal behavior, that’s how you’re supposed to conduct yourself on the Internet

@paul evidence?

I'm not skeptical, I'd like to understand better.

@paul Don’t see anything on the horizon that’s gonna stop that flip, only accelerate it
@paul I post some flip stories to my regulars. A lot of music stories. Half the time Twitter wont even post them. Over 1k followers and often only 20 read a post.

@paul
When the fun neighborhood place turns into the Nazi-Bar, fewer and fewer regular people want to be seen there. Makes perfect sense to me.

@mmasnick

@paul Very much so. I was a Tweetdeck user and by the end of 2022, my feed ticked along very slowly.
I came here in 2017 and watched it come alive. For me, engagement finally stayed above the other place from around November. Thereʼs very little point to being on the other site.

@paul I just saw a posting on Mastodon for a website with K-mart music tapes from the 80s (https://archive.org/details/attentionkmartshoppers) Thanks @internetarchive and @thepru

Why would I ever go back to the bird with deals like these??

@paul This ain't rocket surgery. That ship has left the barn.
@paul I would like to move on from Twitter but can't because I'd literally miss out. This whole "Twitter dying" discourse completely ignores that there's a universe beyond the US and frankly even Europe. If you want to follow crises, conflicts or discussions in the Middle East and Africa you just don't have an alternative to Twitter. People there don't care about US culture wars and our internal problems with fascism - and why would they?
Also war on Ukraine info is most accessible on Twitter.
@paul even #twitter is trying to slow the flip by letting people hide the blue check mark they paid for. It went from a badge of honor to a dunce cap overnight.

@paul I was never all that hardcore, and very late to the party. I started using daily not long after EM made his offer. Very quickly I found that I'd tuned it to show me tons of interesting stuff from interesting people, and the contrast to the garbage I saw on Facebook was striking.

It was great for a short while. But the signal to noise ratio has degraded terribly since the takeover. I don't know enough to know why. I just know that it's so. Its mostly junk now and barely worth opening.

@paul My brother, who originally said i was 'overreacting' has... over the course of the past few months... suggested that things were... turning out just as bad as I warned him they would and is ALMOST at a point where he is finally considering dumping his twitter account.

He is no activist. He is a gamer.
Mostly he is just sick of how buggy and unreliable it is.

@paul I agree! I was a faithful Twitter person for over a decade. I had to step away after Musk took over. It wasn’t easy weaning myself off of the bird site!
@paul Either Musk didn’t realize just how fungible social networks are, or he wanted to destroy Twitter. I’m leaning toward the latter
@paul Daily Twitter user and know that feeling.
@paul I hope you’re right we need people to leave Twitter and get to the fediverse so that we can organize as effectively as possible for 2024. #Vote
@paul I bailed out last week. Most of the folks I cared about following had left.
@paul That reminds me of how I found a MySpace badge lanyard in my partner’s memory box today. It’s gone from FOBS to nostalgia (ignoring the awful)
@paul and I think we have all seen this coming for a while. The fact that societal issues cause such rage and division on Twitter (or any social media site), paired with how much that rage and division has been building over the years, it's only inevitable for the walls to come down. I used to love Twitter. Now I barely touch it unless I need to do some book promo. Engaging there is so hard right now.
@paul Twitter better promote erotic and sexual content then normal interest content 👎
@paul I thought all the dire warnings before his takeover were exaggerated. Then within days I decided I couldn't stand to be associated with it anymore and deactivated my account.
@paul Killing the APIs was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Jenius, that guy.
@jimcarroll Yeah, I like how EM is conducting a randomized experiment on his own service. Really compelling data coming back on fuckedness.
@paul It’s nearly all drop-ship junk ads and self-promoting 🧵’s. Such a bummer.
