⚠️ Via Brandon Friedman:

This is some extremely fascist stuff. Texas is continuing its effort to strip its Democratic cities of any power whatsoever.

Democracy Docket:

NEW: #Texas Senate passes #SB1933 on a party line vote, a bill that would empower the governor-appointed secretary of state to take over election oversight from local county officials. The bill now goes to the Texas House. https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/texas-senate-passes-bill-to-seize-control-of-elections-from-local-authorities/

Democracy Docket
@GottaLaff make their illegal manipulations legal. WTF.
@JanisKay This terrifies me.
@GottaLaff got to give Republicans credit for their being minority but grabbing control. Bastards.
@JanisKay I do. That's why I'm so worried. They do it too well.
@GottaLaff I wonder… are they all in “The Family”. That goes back decades, so years of planning.
@JanisKay Jeff Sharlet could tell you. I'm betting YES.
Well @GottaLaff let’s ask @jeffsharlet do you think the hot mess we are seeing has been manipulated by #TheFamily???
@GottaLaff
When inevitably the Republican wins the next major election in Texas, the Democrats should just go ahead and beat them with their own stick. Challenge every election and refuse to concede close loses. They’ve been fucking around, it’s about time they find out.
@jeber I agree, but not sure it'll change the outcome.
@GottaLaff
It probably won’t. It would require the Dems to lie the way the right lies to us. But that seems to be a bridge too far. The Dems will mumble and whine about “those cheaters”.
When it comes to push and shove, the Dems let themselves get pushed around and bullied, reluctant to resist.
I swear, it’s a humanity problem. We’re carpenters who don’t know how to use our tools.
We should have stayed in the trees. It was safer there.
@jeber @DemocracyMattersALot @GottaLaff I dunno. This tactic runs the risk of validating the RW’s claims that U.S. elections *in general* are rigged and untrustworthy and seems at best unlikely to produce any tangible successes. Can you explain how you think this would actually help anything? I don’t see it.
@jeber @GottaLaff stop posting comments like this where dems actually have a spine. It just makes me sad & discouraged about what should be but will never happen. We are destined to be complete pushovers who are constantly humiliated unless by some miracle, gen z changes things. Even the comments to this are against fighting back and in favor of us staying completely weak and they will come up with all kinds of excuses & justifications for it. I just want dems treat gop like they do progressives
@GottaLaff Imagine if the Federal Government enacted the same laws, but for states...
@GottaLaff They are turning blue cities into colonies to be ruled by appointed colonial administrators.
@andytiedye We're so screwed
@GottaLaff @andytiedye The blue countries are the economic engines of those red states. Not that I put it past them to cut off their noses to spite their faces, but if the state decides to go to war with the counties that keep the state functioning, I don't see it ending well for the state
@BrentInMasto @GottaLaff Disney is the largest employer in Florida and it's pretty obvious deFloridaMan is doing exactly that. He doesn't care about Florida anymore, he's going for the White House. He assumes that the craziest Republican gets the nomination (likely) and that the fix will be in with the red state legislatures to award the Presidency to whomever the Republicans nominate, ignoring the popular vote so the fact that all Democrats and most independents can't stand him won't matter.
@andytiedye @GottaLaff
That was the exact example I had in mind! Disney is playing the long game, and I think DeSantis is the new Walker
@GottaLaff All of this should be challenged under the 14th Amendment. And presented to a judge in Washington state...
@GottaLaff @DemocracyMattersALot I don’t know how anyone can say that Texas is purple or could be blue. Gerrymandered or not, blue states don’t have laws like this and aren’t in the top 5 most fascist states in the country
@twitterreject I know exactly what you mean. I agree. @DemocracyMattersALot
@GottaLaff
“ Texas Senate Passes Bill To Ignore the Will of the People and rule by fiat.”
Now we know. MAGAts, who don’t really care about America anyway, want to go back to the days of the knights, lords, and kings.
Me? I’d send them all back to the days of the dinosaurs.
@GottaLaff Extremist, Facist, UnAmerican....and, we the people, have no where to turn! Major league corruption in SCOTUS, weak-kneed DOJ...I could continue, but there is no point.
@Atticus1956 That last part. Sigh. I feel the same way.
@GottaLaff THE FASCISTS ARE COMI....wait...nevermind. They've always been here.
@axeshun Thanks for making that important point! With a historical view, recent developments of this kind, while still awful (and life threatening to the most vulnerable!), don't seem quite as earth shattering.
Pretty sure mother nature is going to end human civilization before the fascists gain complete control of the country, but of course the two disasters will go hand in hand.
And with that happy thought for the night, I'mma move along to another thread. Cheers!
@GottaLaff
@GottaLaff so red states have been given permission by this Supreme Court to ignore a Democratic federal government (abortion, guns), but CAN negate and dictate any blue pockets within their state. They’ve learned fascism well.

@GottaLaff

It's a lot easier to steal and/or rig an election if your political party officials controls every aspect of that election.

"Democracy Dies in the Darkness," and that is the #Republican's stated plan for the US.

@GottaLaff 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️
@GottaLaff This is legitimately terrifying. Given states rights is there a way to push back on this legally?

@Pineywoozle I know it is! I'm legit scared. That's why I said I feel better in Canada than I do in the US now.

I wish I knew the answer to that. I really do.

@GottaLaff @Pineywoozle
The answer is push back from Biden.Cut them off from all federal funding and FEMA assistance. Isolate them . Cut all services. Make them an island.

@GatekeepKen @GottaLaff @Pineywoozle

Ah. Now that's an idea. Of course they'll play the victim card, but it might stop them.

@Sharonbw @GottaLaff @Pineywoozle
Fuck that crap . this is why we lose. Afraid to hit back ..Cut them the fuck off.
@GatekeepKen @GottaLaff I don’t know realistically, what kind of powers he has over, states rights or to affect them, but this needs addressed.
@Pineywoozle @GottaLaff
If you don't exert pain on them ,they won't stop. Boycott them.
@GatekeepKen @GottaLaff I agree, I’m just not sure what form should or could take.
@Pineywoozle @GottaLaff
This is no longer a game ,It's war and we are losing. Biden needs to start ignoring their pleas for federal assistance since they use it against us. The debt ceiling ! Qevin says there's no money, let's go along with him.
@GatekeepKen @GottaLaff I don’t agree with punishing citizens. But there’s got to be something that can be done that will make the politicians sit up and take notice.
@Pineywoozle @GatekeepKen @GottaLaff The GOP would use that as a weapon against the Dems, and that’s not fair to the actual people of Texas.
@morganarae @Pineywoozle @GottaLaff
So what ? Like Biden won't win Texas ...no kidding..We don't win texas or Floriduh , any of the red states. fuck those assholes .Let them struggle through tornado season and make their Governors get off the money instead of using it to surpress the vote and women's rights.
@morganarae @GatekeepKen @GottaLaff I don’t agree to cutting off services. I just agree that it needs addressed in a way they can’t ignore. The politicians don’t care if you hurt the people who need services. It’s the politicians we need to address.

@Pineywoozle @morganarae @[email protected]

like what...you're going to shame a politician. They don't care ,they're all paid for. You have to afect the people that support them . The people will vote them out when they feel it.

@morganarae @Pineywoozle @GottaLaff
Texas is a red state we will never carry.
who gives a shit.
@GatekeepKen @morganarae @GottaLaff You can’t be this cavalier with peoples lives or you become just like the GOP. Plus I don’t think it would have the effect you think. I think it would make them angry and make them vote more strenuously for the GOP… they’re that brainwashed.
@Pineywoozle @morganarae @GottaLaff
I think you sound like an independent.. Again, you have no answers. This is not play nice time. Go make some art, we got this..
@GatekeepKen @morganarae @GottaLaff I’m a Dem who actually understands psychology and has a working moral compass. Even if you wanted him to do that, Biden wouldn’t, but he might figure out someway to affect their politicians. Which is the angle we should all be looking at.
@Pineywoozle @GatekeepKen @morganarae @GottaLaff I don't see any need to look to the federal level for a solution here. Completely ignorant of the relevant laws etc, but it seems to me that if the state of Texas wants to take the vote away from their most prosperous counties, those counties should retain all of their tax revenue to spend locally
Exclusive: As 2024 election approaches, White House jumps into states' abortion battles

The White House is jumping into state-level battles for women's reproductive rights, lending legal and messaging advice to allies in states pushing restrictions as the Biden administration seeks to make abortion access a rallying cry in next year's presidential election.

Reuters
@BrentInMasto @Pineywoozle @GatekeepKen @GottaLaff None of what you said makes sense to me. When it comes to protecting fundamental constitutional rights like the right to vote, the federal government has to supercede the states. I don't know that counties have the power to retain their tax revenue. They depend on state funds, too.
@Pineywoozle @GottaLaff
Gatekeeper was an easy block. I don't have patience for that bullshit.
@morganarae @GottaLaff Wasn’t he just. That was some callous BS
@GottaLaff The cities (and increasingly suburbs) here in Texas are solidly blue, and the GOP knows they’re gone to them forever. All they can do to hold on to power is to make it harder and harder for those counties to vote and even govern themselves.

@GottaLaff

They're going to pass it unless Texans rise up and pull them out of their seats of power. And then the Governor is going to sign it. And then the Texas courts will sign off on it. And then SCOTUS will sign off as well. Because fascism has a grip on power already in a plurality of states.

That "pull them out of their seats of power" thing is critical.
