⚠️ Via Brandon Friedman:

This is some extremely fascist stuff. Texas is continuing its effort to strip its Democratic cities of any power whatsoever.

Democracy Docket:

NEW: #Texas Senate passes #SB1933 on a party line vote, a bill that would empower the governor-appointed secretary of state to take over election oversight from local county officials. @GottaLaff This is legitimately terrifying. Given states rights is there a way to push back on this legally?

@Pineywoozle I know it is! I'm legit scared. That's why I said I feel better in Canada than I do in the US now.

I wish I knew the answer to that. I really do.

@GottaLaff @Pineywoozle
The answer is push back from Biden.Cut them off from all federal funding and FEMA assistance. Isolate them . Cut all services. Make them an island.
@Pineywoozle @GatekeepKen @GottaLaff The GOP would use that as a weapon against the Dems, and that’s not fair to the actual people of Texas.
@morganarae @Pineywoozle @GottaLaff
Texas is a red state we will never carry.
who gives a shit.
@GatekeepKen @morganarae @GottaLaff You can’t be this cavalier with peoples lives or you become just like the GOP. Plus I don’t think it would have the effect you think. I think it would make them angry and make them vote more strenuously for the GOP… they’re that brainwashed.
@Pineywoozle @morganarae @GottaLaff
I think you sound like an independent.. Again, you have no answers. This is not play nice time. Go make some art, we got this..
@GatekeepKen @morganarae @GottaLaff I’m a Dem who actually understands psychology and has a working moral compass. Even if you wanted him to do that, Biden wouldn’t, but he might figure out someway to affect their politicians. Which is the angle we should all be looking at.
@Pineywoozle @GatekeepKen @morganarae @GottaLaff I don't see any need to look to the federal level for a solution here. Completely ignorant of the relevant laws etc, but it seems to me that if the state of Texas wants to take the vote away from their most prosperous counties, those counties should retain all of their tax revenue to spend locally
Exclusive: As 2024 election approaches, White House jumps into states' abortion battles

The White House is jumping into state-level battles for women's reproductive rights, lending legal and messaging advice to allies in states pushing restrictions as the Biden administration seeks to make abortion access a rallying cry in next year's presidential election.

@BrentInMasto @Pineywoozle @GatekeepKen @GottaLaff None of what you said makes sense to me. When it comes to protecting fundamental constitutional rights like the right to vote, the federal government has to supercede the states. I don't know that counties have the power to retain their tax revenue. They depend on state funds, too.
