Good morning!
I've just posted an article on LinkedIn called "How to approach #Marketing on #Mastodon?"

I know it's a touchy subject. We do not really like ads on the network. However, I am making the point that, on #Fediverse, the most important aspects of a toot are quality, giving to the community through quality of interactions, and inclusivity.

With the rise of the network, it's a matter of time until we see large companies trying. (1/2)

How to approach Marketing on Mastodon?

You might have heard about it in many places over the past few months.: Mastodon and its distributed ecosystem this the new kid on the block for microblogging.

I am trying to influence the behaviour on the platform to not destroy our values.

If you can, read it, and if you agree, try to reshare it to as many people as possible (LinkedIn, Mastodon, even Twitter if you must :)).

Let's attempt to guide these big players to interact in a constructive way.

Thanks a lot for your #help!

Just updated the article with the corrections from @KarlE and @kristinHenry !
Thanks a lot for your help!
@dimi Would love to see some mention of using CWs as "Content Wrappers", as the names of things don't always reflect how they're used here :)

@kristinHenry I've never heard it referred that way, but I think it completely makes sense. I'll update the article once I m in front of a computer tomorrow.

Thanks!

@dimi
firstly, thanks for this guide, it may help some. In Germany, we have various entities of the government and ministers tooting on a server set up by the federal data protection officer, and we see a bandwidth from engaging and interacting to bland ads and no reaction to comments.
One common misconception, your statement: "the Federated timeline. There, you will see all the toots, and boosts, of all people on all servers that are federated with yours." is plain wrong! >
@kristinHenry
@dimi
federations are not full feeds. (There is a form of server coupling that relays all toots, but this is only used very selectively). So, you will only see a fraction of toots that were made on federated servers on the federated timeline, i.e. only ones that were pulled to your server by 0) posted locally, a) local people following the poster b) local people following someone who boosted that toot, c) someone local fetching a toot to favo or boost it.
@kristinHenry

@KarlE @kristinHenry Well this is shocking. I've always understood the federation to be getting all toots... But I checked it (in disbelief :D ) and you're completely right!

I'll update the post. Can I mention you in it as you've helped with the correction?

Thanks!

@KarlE @kristinHenry
For anyone interested, here's the extract of the Github doc :

The Federated Timeline

The Federated Timeline shows all public posts from all users "known" to your instance. This means the user is either on the same instance as you, or somebody on your instance follows that user. The Federated Timeline is a great way to engage in the broad chatter of the world.

@dimi
all I did was pointing you to the docs. the docs also don't fully agree with me, and since I haven't bothered checking what is really in the federated timeline (I spend more than intended time just checking my personal timeline and the links it contains), I may be wrong whether it really is user based (so my case c would not appear) or perhaps they simplified it in the description.
So I don't feel I should be credited.
Again many thanks for spending effort on advising on the Fediverse!
@dimi I have some good articles explaining CWs pinned. They are a great place to start.
@dimi Linkedin has become less than useful. I almost never go there anymore.

@dimi I don't know about you, Dimi, but I intend to approach all #marketing in #mastodon with a two-by-four in my hand, or perhaps a baseball bat with some nails in it.

marketing *shouldn't exist*, as far as I'm concernedβ€”I don't want it here or anywhere else in public. I don't wanted it "guided" anywhere but away from this place completely.

I know that's an unrealistic goal, perhaps, but I've watched too many social media succumb to advertising. PURGE that stuff, I say.

@thepnictogenwing I know it's a touchy subject... But as we live in a consumer(ist) society, the reality is that a lot of money is spent on marketing. There are a lot of people avidly following brands and being super exited about new products (I'm part of the group sometimes) - Think about the engagement of the Apple fans queuing in front of the store when a new product is launched...
I think, if it's done right, it can be beneficial for the network (and we always have the "unfollow" opt)
@dimi brand and commercial oriented fediverse servers tend to get on the block list pretty fast. Same goes with obvious business accounts, even if they are nothing but friendly, well written posts that detail their current offers and helpfully engage with others.

I'm here to talk with people as people about their interests. Not get news, updates or quality engagement with interesting or otherwise amazing opportunities in my area.
