For #FediFriday / #FollowFriday I made a simple website that lists 5-8 *active* Mastodon accounts for each of the following categories: Columnists, Journalism, Tech, Media, Politics, Authors, Social Justice, Advocacy, Law/Legal, SciComm

Lots of great follows in there (imho), including many familiar faces and some folks you may not (yet) know about.

Check it out, and let me know what you think!

@DataDrivenMD

I love this. May I also suggest a text list version with one address per line. For many of that will be the easiest and quickest method to follow people.

Something like this:

Advocacy:
@BlackAzizAnansi
@ifilljustice
etc.

SciComm:
@petergleick
@HelenBranswell
etc.

@DataDrivenMD Looks helpful. Are you building this app for general consumption?

@DataDrivenMD is there a spreadsheet version which we can just import with one click?

Ive tried it from the laptop, and each link takes me to their instance's domain in a new tab, instead of showing me their profile from my open instance.

@DataDrivenMD Really great, thanks! I just wish it wasn't a multi-tab event to follow people this way. I have to switch from your page to mine and search for them. Clicking through just takes me to their server, not mine. Suggestions to streamline?
@DataDrivenMD this is great, off to follow whoever we aren't already! Please consider a category for Independent outlets too! A lot of us are here.
@DataDrivenMD @mmasnick
I stopped browsing when I saw Judd Legum listed. A bot/script just crossposting his tweets isn't an *active* Mastodon account.
#SorryNotSorry
@Beeks @DataDrivenMD @mmasnick I've seen interactions here from his account not just auto-publishing.
@tchambers @DataDrivenMD @mmasnick surely not often enough that you'd define him as "active" though, right?
@DataDrivenMD your Explore Mastodon website is such a useful tool to point people to worthwhile active Mastodon accounts. I’ve been working my way through them and following accounts that interest me. I’ve made a note on my phone with the website link so I can check back to see new additions. Thank you! https://fedifriday.fedified.com #fedifriday #learning #connections #inquiringminds

@DataDrivenMD Very nice. I found a few new people to follow (I'm already following many on your list). I like the categories and the fact that there aren't so many listings that it become tedious to explore. Do you plan to change it each Friday?

@DataDrivenMD

Great idea - thank you! You might want to check out this site where I've embedded posts of recommended accounts on given topics. https://recknsense.com/recknlist/

@DataDrivenMD
Steven Beschloss for the win!
Great list, thank you
@DataDrivenMD Excellent! But where’s the Medicine section?
@DataDrivenMD @gunchleoc
I mean it sounds good but every category should be prefixed with “US…”:
US Columnists
US Journalism
etc

Fediverse? FediUS.
🤷‍♂️
@DataDrivenMD Add @atrupar maybe?This is such a gift to all of us, thank you!
@DataDrivenMD
Hi, curious how and why you chose those listed. Do you share that information? Should it be included in the site's info?
Interested to hear back.
Thanks.
@DataDrivenMD
Feeling are hurt😏, yet very good list indeed. Now off to go pout.
@DataDrivenMD nice idea! It’s kinda hard to grow here.
@DataDrivenMD Please consider adding a list of the hardworking trolls on Mastodon, Dr. Caballero! This can be a harsh, unwelcome place for us. The few of us that remain at barely getting by with very little engagement. People either ban us, block us, ignore us, or respond politely (which can’t feed us). Our plight is miserable, and a little recognition would help.

@DataDrivenMD

This is great, sir. Thank you!

@DataDrivenMD Hey, I love this and will definitely bookmark it. Would it be possible to add categories such as weather/meteorology (Maybe it already is under SciComm?) now that the NWS is being limited over on Twitter? I think it'd be good for people looking for important weather information.

I can't think of a proper category name for it. I also noticed transit info is going to be hard to come by as well.

Just thought I'd throw a suggestion that direction for important urgent info.

@DataDrivenMD Nice! Strongly recommend adding @mmasnick to your Tech list.
@DataDrivenMD Just to be clear, the idea is with your app, each of us can have our own rec list, by category, right?

@DataDrivenMD That's quite good! One issue I noted when following the link via the android app, people with long names have them abbreviated to fit the portrait style format of cell phones making it hard to figure out who they are if it just shows "Bob ..."
I'm not sure if you could auto-scale the font size or have two lines available for the account name...

For authors, I'd add

@marthawells
@TheAuthorGuy
@dianeduane
@gregeganSF
@GreatDismal
@hntdove
@bruces
@stephenfry
@nnedi
@wattevans

Tools like this are needed, as the discovery features in Mastodon are somewhat broken by design (in my opinion). So it's great to have it.

It looks clean, both on mobile and desktop. There is a dark mode (lovely!).

There are two things that I would like to see improved:

1) The bio text is too small to read comfortably. The text in the tooltip on mouse hover (on desktop) is much better and easier to read.
