Living in Texas, nothing irritates me like the condescending apathy of blue state Democrats who think they're safe so none of this matters.

You're not safe.

This blue state / red state mentality where it's all about living in the right place and it's your own fault if you don't is not helping anyone.

Especially when red states power national Republican election victories that affect everyone.

How quickly people forgot what it was like having Trump and a GOP controlled Congress, which is how we got this corrupt SCOTUS in the first place.

When Republicans are done, it won't matter where you live. They don't honor "states rights" for anyone else.
@gwynnion And that's how they will be destroyed...
@gwynnion and they never fucking did
@gwynnion even in “liberal” California, there’s 1 county that’s solid republican and they rival FLorida with their policies. Recently school board illegally replaced superintendent to someone with their beliefs are trying to ban books & black history & in lgbt issues. And this is in the most liberal state in the country.
@twitterreject @gwynnion 1 county is a severe undercount. I live in a rural Sierra county, and ALL of the Sierra counties are deep red, as well as much of the southern central valley and far northern Ca.
I’m from Texas, so I have seen me some racists in my day, and the overt racism displayed in the Sierra counties equals or exceeds anything I ever saw in Texas.
@bertwells @twitterreject @gwynnion I agree. I’m from SoCal and I know quite a lot of people who have moved to those areas and when they left they gave overtly racist reasons. It’s scary in some of those parts.
@twitterreject @gwynnion I was walking my dogs this morning at the local school & saw a confederate flag in a window. When I looked in through another window, I saw another one prominently hanging next to a map. It appeared to be a history lesson. That flag was never displayed when I learned history. That’s either an ill informed teacher or one who is allowing their beliefs to interfere —-normalizing that flag to children 🤬 from a red part of Cali, once purple
@gwynnion and then you were lucky that the whole bunch was incredibly incompetent. Considering this, just imagine the damage a fascist-controlled government with an IQ higher than room temperature could do.

Well, you don’t have to imagine, actually — the red states are pretty much giving a solid preview from what I can tell from beyond the pond.

@orangelantern The first two years of Trump were the dog having caught the car and not knowing what to do with it. But they were laser focused on hijacking the courts, and they won't make the same mistakes again.

Our only advantage was Trump didn't care about the politics because he was in it for the grift.

@gwynnion Exactly (nice metaphor btw), that was disastrous for everyone involved but it actually could have been much worse. Which it will be and also is really scary.

Also appointing someone into such an important position for life almost deafeningly screams bad idea. Sometimes you really wonder about people’s sanity.
@orangelantern The thing to understand about American government is it was designed to be gamed by white supremacists.

@gwynnion
Texas is an outlier and not particularly representative of the rest of the country. Getting the rest of the country back on track will probably have little to do with Texas and vice versa.
The reasons are multitude.
The same is true for a couple of other "special islands" within the US.

Suffice to say that Texas people enjoy Texas and aren't going anywhere, and folks who don't enjoy Texas aren't exactly arriving in droves.

@gwynnion
What really sucks is that 5 million Texans aren't being represented.
East and West Texas are essentially different states, and I wonder if everyone wouldn't be happier if that was the actuality
@dnavinci @gwynnion but blue voters *have* been moving to TX - and demographically TX is changing anyhow + more blue voters have been being born! Young voters are overwhelmingly D. If TX doesn't gut democracy TX will be blue within the decade. Part of why they going so hard on disenfranchisement.

@semiquaver @dnavinci @gwynnion Lots of people are moving to red states all over. Nashville is huge now. Huntsville is now the biggest city in Alabama. 8M more people are expected to move to Atlanta in the coming years. And it's helping because GA is already starting to flip.

People who say to boycott red states don't understand that it takes money to enact change. And chances are, the phone company you use in blue country donates to J6 senators.

@dnavinci @gwynnion Alabama, part of the rest of the country, says hi.
@gwynnion Thomas came from daddy Bush with the help of Biden.
Roberts came from W Bush. Alito was also W Bush.
Gorsuch was Obama but McConnell blocked it until trump. Kavanaugh was trump with the help of head of fbi still in power (Wray) who lied about an investigation. Barret was also trump but that’s bc RBG was too stubborn to step down prior.
Trump finalized the court but there were already 3 crooks from other presidents
@twitterreject @gwynnion Gorsuch was not Obama. Obama nominated Merrick Garland and McConnell blocked him. Trump appointed Gorsuch instead.
@Sameagle @gwynnion yeah so the appointment that was supposed to be from Obama was pushed forward to trump and he put up Gorsuck. Same thing different wording
@twitterreject @gwynnion Your wording made it look as though Obama nominated Gorsuch.
@Sameagle @gwynnion ok I gotta pay attention better so I’m saying what I mean. I had 2 people absolutely flip out on me yesterday bc they thought I was calling a guy the horrible insult of being a girl and “misgendered” him. I said he was a pandering pathetic bitch and that was no big deal, but to accidentally call someone a girl who is a guy is the worst sin imaginable to these gen z people. I couldn’t believe how much they both flipped out over it when i just put the words in the wrong order.
@gwynnion so we don’t let them forget. We can be the spine our Dems in Congress seem to have lost. We can move these mountains but we must be United to do it. How? Join. Join. Join . Act. Act. Act. Speak. Write. Petition. Donate then do all of it again and again and again. If I can do this at my Senior age with one foot on this planet and one foot off, ANYONE Can.
@gwynnion am too.
Texas has always been the whiny state- always wanting to secede and always demanding handouts. The biggest talkers are usually the weakest actors. The majority voted your problems in, as a minority it’s on you to make change there, or just change. You have a great neighbor next door with lots of room.
@zuzuruz @gwynnion You miss the point. It's nearly impossible to vote out Republicans in Texas and other red states because of gerrymandering. Here in Kentucky, my county had a Democratic State Representative until the last election. Republicans changed her district to remove a Democratic area of the next county and replace it with Republican areas in two counties. It is now a 4 hour drive from end to end. The closest route to the northern tip requires driving through West Virginia.
@Sameagle @gwynnion that’s why I said they have a hard road ahead to make change.

@gwynnion Somewhere this morning, I read that almost all politicians pay attention when the calls & emails come in. I'm in a blue state, and #today I fired up ResistBot to send my thanks to my pols for not being fascist racist bags o' dicks.

Our former rep ran as a Democrat & won, and then switched to Maga Republican once in office.

Nobody is 'safe'.

@gwynnion lost my Democratic Congressman last year due to Democratic party shenanigans trying to give my district to a more senior Congressman who didn't like his old district post redistricting.
Still voted for the him, but wasn't enough
@gwynnion I live in #NewJersey and I KNOW we’re not safe, as do the other grassroots activists I work with. Trying to convince blasé NJ Dems and left-leaning Indies of that is endlessly frustrating. #VoteBlue
@gwynnion goes for those of us in Canada as well. As they keep “winning” States the money being poured into going back in time will simply start crossing the border to do it here as well. Its already started.
@gwynnion @BlackAzizAnansi I’m in solidarity with “red state” non Republicans. As a friend of mine pointed out, from a global perspective all Americans live in a “red state”.
@gwynnion Not when a rogue judge in Amarillo can impose nationwide edicts...
@gwynnion Oh, some of us know "states' rights" only ever count as a stepping stone to total control.
@gwynnion totally agree. this cultural poison will spread.

@gwynnion @_L1vY_ I’m in Michigan, which sometimes feels very blue, but “federal regulations give U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) authority to operate within 100 miles of any U.S. ‘external boundary’” (ACLU).

Every single inch of Michigan is under the authority of CBP and that WILL be weaponized at the first opportunity, long before the constitution falls - and it will.

It’s only the slightest hyperbole to say that CBP doesn’t recognize the constitution.

@SimplyJennifer @gwynnion @_L1vY_ To be fair, CBP is probably several steps down the road. Look at formerly "blue" states like Ohio - where people thought all they had to do was vote, and they could go back to sleep after electing people with D's after their names.

@gwynnion the fascists are on the rise everywhere. We need to organize everywhere. Turn Texas and Ohio blue!

Over the winter holidays, Michael Moore laid out a strategy of things we can do to rebuild the democrat brand and save America from the regressive GOP. Worth a listen. I'm trying to do it locally. Two things I'm doing:
1. vetting and supporting candidates.
2. Creating local progressive media.

@gwynnion
We know!
Just vote better...
@gwynnion
Most of us know and we're terrified.

@gwynnion

I lived in TX for years & still have children & grandchildren there, plus many friends. I don't consider it a "blue state." It was purple every year I lived there, the Dem candidates always losing by not much & winning several counties and/or cities. I currently live in a "blue state" & I have come across many more angry "right wingers" here than in TX. Plenty of city councils here are bright red. It's a myth that anyone is safe anywhere, or that any state is a lost cause.

@gwynnion They and the related "vote better", "just move", and "let them secede" contingents can get in the sea. Nobody has time for "sucks to be you" liberals.
@gwynnion It's also cruel and short-sighted to assume everyone in a red state is the worst kind of Republican. Those states are so thoroughly gerrymandered that their Democrats don't make an electoral dent. It doesn't mean they're not there.

@gwynnion

⬆️

And I’m always grateful for our friends and activists that are fighting every day in Texas and other Red States and places.

None of us are safe until all of us are safe.

@gwynnion also in Texas & I'm tired of people acting like the GOP doesn't cheat, lie, & steal to stay in power.
@gwynnion I would think other Texans would figure higher on your list. They are the people electing these maniacs.
@gwynnion This 88 y.o. Is pretty sure that venting your rage over red state politicians by insulting blue state democrats is counterproductive. The latter create havens for pregnant women in desperate need, donate generously to red state candidates, give to organizations knocking on doors, etc. I hope you do something equally helpful.
@gwynnion amen—say it louder, we’re all on the same team. I’m frustrated because I know Californians who support GOP & trumpism for “fiscal reasons” in complete denial about what would happen to them and their lifestyle if we let anti-democratic groups get absolute control. All for a tax cut 🤬 they keep telling themselves it’s all an act to get elected and “get sh*t done.” I see it in my own family. Denial.

@gwynnion

It matters, but we cannot vote in your state. So it needs to matter to more of you.

@gwynnion
I repeatedly have to tell my husband this. Every time I relate the most recent GQP attack in people’s rights, his stock answer is “we live in Washington state”. That’s NOT going to be enough to save our grandkids!

@gwynnion

Cali hears you as we have by population a very large chunk of MAGA, guessing by Hee Haw's own Kevin McFuckFace it's the large bumpy ass part.

Our MAGA wants to join, Idaho, join Washington, or just declare themselves some kind of shithole Whitey only republic

If we come off apathic, that's just the rain we have not seen in a decade, talking

@gwynnion I'm a liberal living in Texas and my friends in blue states have never been condescending to me. They are generally sympathetic.
@gwynnion I don’t know any democrat who thinks America is safe.
@gwynnion And it’s not about us, we’re all in this together!
