Texas Judge Invalidates FDA Approval of the Abortion Pill Mifepristone

The Texas judge’s ruling was quickly contradicted by another federal judge in Washington State who ordered the F.D.A. to keep mifepristone available.

“Today’s ruling is another massive step towards Republicans’ goal of a nationwide abortion ban and could throw our country into chaos.” - Senate Majority Leader Schumer
“Today’s unprecedented decision threatens the rights of women nationwide to make decisions about their health care and the ability to access medication prescribed to them by their doctors.” - VP Kamala Harris in a statement https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/07/statement-from-vice-president-harris-on-decision-in-alliance-for-hippocratic-medicine-v-fda/

Today’s unprecedented decision threatens the rights of women nationwide to make decisions about their health care and the ability to access medication prescribed to them by their doctors. Simply put: this decision undermines the FDA’s ability to approve safe and effective medications—from chemotherapy drugs, to asthma medicine, to blood pressure pills, to insulin—based on science,…

“If this ruling were to stand, then there will be virtually no prescription, approved by the FDA, that would be safe from these kinds of political, ideological attacks.” - President Biden in a statement https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/04/07/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-decision-in-alliance-for-hippocratic-medicine-v-fda/
Statement from President Joe Biden on Decision in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA | The White House

Today a single federal district judge in Texas ruled that a prescription medication that has been available for more than 22 years, approved by the FDA and used safely and effectively by millions of women here and around the world, should no longer be approved in the United States.  The Court in this case has…

“We will vigorously fight this unprecedented decision in court. We have appealed the decision and will seek a stay.” - HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra
“This ruling by a hard-right Trump appointed judge is simply bullshitt...nothing more than another attempt by the GOP to take away the rights of women and implement a nationwide abortion ban," says Sen. John Fetterman in a statement.
#Mifepristone "remains safe and legal in Pennsylvania. We will fight this, and we will win.”
@w7voa “a hard-right Trump appointed judge…” some of us sure were outraged when Trump himself suggested rulings could be impacted if a judge was an “Obama judge.” Then we see decisions by Aileen Cannon, or the latest Trump-appointed SCOTUS and we’re all like “hmmm.” Does bias only lean one way?
@w7voa turns out conservatives like regulation and the administrative state when they can weaponize it against women. 🤔

@w7voa I’m not saying they’d use this precedent to make estrogen unavailable or even to manipulate stock prices, but they would.
@w7voa someone shoild file a lawsuit canceling every merger because it was approved sloppily - id atart with t-mobile and sprint and just keep going
@w7voa If this misogynistic, irrational, radical decision banning this medication is allowed to stand, we should immediately go after Viagra and Cialis, because there is no Constitutional right to an erection and those drugs have numerous far more potentially dangerous side effects than mifepristone.

The GOP wants lawyers and judges, not doctors, to decide healthcare in the US.

Right now, they are focusing on limiting women’s healthcare, but if they succeed in setting laws that limit healthcare choices for women, they can succeed in limiting other freedoms for US women.

@ZhiZhu @w7voa Including the freedom to learn how to read and write.
Too much? I'm exaggerating? Ok.
@ZhiZhu @w7voa The GOP wants women to die, is what they want.

@w7voa

Say it is a step they planned to remove the right of women to control their own bodies, choose when to be pregnant, it is not a step to ending, because it will not be ended, and the corrupt supreme court will be repaired.

@w7voa states rights except : abortion and guns amirite?
@w7voa It looks like it applies only to the plaintiff states (p30):
"Pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 65(a), Defendants and their officers, agents, servants, employees, attorneys, and any person in active
concert or participation, are PRELIMINARILY ENJOINED from:
“altering the status quo and rights as it relates to the availability of

@w7voa

Misoprostol can be used alone for medication abortions, but the addition of #Mifepristone (approved by FDA 20+ yrs ago) is used to reduce the side effects (cramping, bleeding) of medication abortion.

The #GOP wants to outlaw Mifepistone and make medication abortion LESS SAFE and MORE PAINFUL for women.

There are NO medical reasons for a *judge* to revoke FDA approval of Mifepristone.

Just misogynistic ones.

The decision will probably be appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, and the case could make its way to the Supreme Court.

@ZhiZhu @w7voa

The addition of mifepristone to misoprostol also increases success rates from 80-85% (for misoprostol alone) to over 95% for the combination.
😔

Garbage partisan misogynistic judge halts safe medication because anyone who has a uterus should not have inalienable rights.
