Apache can change its name

So can Ubuntu tbh

The GNU photoshop too, but for different reasons

FOSS names are kind of shit huh

Also no, before you jump in here to suggest it, forking it doesn't undo the harm
@researchfairy Really hoping for the GNU photoshop one especially because I use it all the time and can't abide by the name and thus can't recommend it to people.
@jessamyn @researchfairy Any thoughts about "GNU Imp"? I remember someone (reddit maybe?) tried to make that one popular at some time... dunno, 2015-ish? and it is closer to a true "name" in semantics since GIMP is a multilevel acronym (one of various issues with free software names). Though I haven't checked in like 5 years of "imp" happens to be a Problematic word now.
@VeniaSilente @jessamyn Changing the name so that the acronym slur is no longer accurate and can't be used to refer to it would be better

@researchfairy @jessamyn Undoubtedly, but is a more far away option that requires working with their vision (and/or the merits they document for keeping the name, and/or it being a English language issue). Thus I'm interested in seeing people trying "work with what we have" options.

(Which sucks, because "glimpse" was a pretty good name, quite easy to verb and "commonalize" as in with eg.: cola, aspirin, post-it, etc)

@VeniaSilente @researchfairy Yeah I don't mind GNU Imp at all (understanding the "work with what we have" mindset) but I do think it will just make recalcitrant folks keep using the old/bad name. Glimpse is lovely and I'm sorry it didn't catch on.

@jessamyn @VeniaSilente @researchfairy

for real, glimpse was great. I was so hoping it would stick

@jessamyn @researchfairy what’s wrong with Gimp?
@monew @jessamyn It's a slur
@researchfairy @jessamyn just searched it up seems to be
@monew @researchfairy Yeah it's one of those words which is also used in the fetish community but to most people here (I am in the US) it's an ableist slur.
@researchfairy The glimpse team tried it and it pretty much didn't get anywhere.
@researchfairy wait for the fossbros coming with "YOU CAN ALWAYS FORK IT"
@researchfairy i meant this toot as a joke, and it's becoming a reality.
i did a reverse-cassandra.
@researchfairy More than once I’ve avoided suggesting open software because I didn’t want to have to say the name in a professional context.
@researchfairy The whole point of Ubuntu was it's sharing aspect. Do some Africans view it as appropriation? However yes, many meaning schemes aren't great
@anubis2814 @researchfairy Hard to tell, how many Africans were part of its development?
@researchfairy @VulpineAmethyst There is, thankfully, already a better-named fork of the image program, that also is working on modern UI changes. The GNU thing dev's seem to be stuck in the "works for me" era. Glimpse appears to be trying to remedy that somewhat https://glimpse-editor.org/
Glimpse: A Free Cross-Platform Photo Editor

@ceralor @VulpineAmethyst I thought development of Glimpse was cancelled
A Project On Hiatus | Glimpse

@clacke @VulpineAmethyst @researchfairy Bleh, I was not aware of that, guh. And yes I agree the project naming should be changed as-is. I'm not sure if them in particular will be easily moved given how much inertia there is in other facets.

@researchfairy anytime I talk about that specific service
it's one of those

'Now I don't know why they chose this name, and I don't suggest calling it this without explaining what it is beforehand, but here's the name'
moments

@researchfairy humbly giving Firefox, Krita, and Blender the “not shit FOSS project name” award
@cinebox @researchfairy I love it. I nominate Rust, Quicksilver, clang, and Mastodon.
@researchfairy The company Akamai too. This is its origin story 🤢, which does not involve any actual Hawaiian people.
@researchfairy While I'm frustrated with the shortcomings of Ubuntu, it has a pretty great name. As a South African, it's just really cool to see a word from one of our native languages see representation in FOSS.
@researchfairy programmers should never be allowed to name their own projects
@cherdt @researchfairy They should stick to the recursive acronyms, those seem to be goofy and harmless
@researchfairy
This is all correct except I want it to stay as GIMP so I can feel spicy when I bring it up
@Dio9sys You know it's an able-ist slur right?
@researchfairy
Oh no, I hadn't realized. I was just imagining a guy in a leather mask
@researchfairy
We can rename it to something less bad but still spicy, like the Free Utitility for Rendering Raster imagerY (FURRY)

@researchfairy I get why Apache should change its name, same with the image editor, but what is wrong using a word from another language in Ubuntu's case?

Not trolling just seeking to understand.

@Stefwill @researchfairy it's that it's the language of a colonised people, used by colonisers without the involvement of the people the language belongs to. it's not just "another language". there's a huge power imbalance between Black Africans and the people who are appropriating words from their language, whose ancestors kidnapped and enslaved their siblings, colonised their countries, committed genocides, and who are still benefitting from ongoing exploitation

@Stefwill @researchfairy and honestly, just look at the effect that the name choice had. "ubuntu" isn't just any old word, it is a name for a whole philosophy, and when Black people talk about it, white folks think they're talking about computers.

it's super disrespectful. it would be questionable to name a big software project, idk, "Jesus"

and people would be insulted but it wouldn't be as harmful because everyone knows what Jesus actually is outside this context

@researchfairy I mean things change, if you dont change as the world does, you get left behind. You gotta adapt to survive. I'm native american and never had a problem with Apache being what it is. Years ago it was called "Apache" because it was a play on "A patchy web server" because all tech basically held on by a thread and pretty much still does. It worked but it was a pain in the ass because it kept breaking.

@researchfairy To avoid arguing with Oracle about trademarks we (Jenkins) changed our names.

As did LibreOffice, MariaDB, and a number of other projects.

Changing your name is doable.

@rtyler @researchfairy

Remember when Firefox was Phoenix?

Remember when SubEthaEdit was Hydra?

So many examples of projects changing names.

One could posit: it's actually one of the easiest kinds of bugs to fix, right after typos.

@researchfairy Yeah, I was in favour of renaming the last one on 2003-04 while involved in the project. Many project members did not see the point (mostly Euro-centric developer team at the time).
@dneary @researchfairy For a while, I was lobbying for Graphic Imp.

@researchfairy @antifuchs Eerie timing, @paigerduty just linked me this totally independently of the toot

Apache® Appropriation

It is not uncommon to learn about non-Indigenous entities appropriating Indigenous culture but none of them are as large, prestigious, nor well-known as The Apache® Software Foundation is in software circles.

Natives in Tech Blog

@researchfairy name changes are annoying, no way to keep track of them

just ask ciruZ or the FoeBuD…

@researchfairy In a previous job, I used the phrase “nobody in software development is ever allowed to name anything ever again” because almost all software developers are particularly bad at that :(
@researchfairy Probably obvious for anyone else, but for me as a non-native (and non-disabled): I never heard "gimp" used not referring to the software before. Could some disabled person tell me whether a) it's in their vocabulary and b) sufficiently triggering for you to warrant in your opinion a name change of the program? Thanks!
@researchfairy they certainly do reflect the culture that produced them.
@researchfairy (I knew a bunch of FOSS dudes in the late 90s / early 00s and they... will never see the problem.)
