Apache can change its name

So can Ubuntu tbh

The GNU photoshop too, but for different reasons

FOSS names are kind of shit huh

@researchfairy I get why Apache should change its name, same with the image editor, but what is wrong using a word from another language in Ubuntu's case?

Not trolling just seeking to understand.

@Stefwill @researchfairy it's that it's the language of a colonised people, used by colonisers without the involvement of the people the language belongs to. it's not just "another language". there's a huge power imbalance between Black Africans and the people who are appropriating words from their language, whose ancestors kidnapped and enslaved their siblings, colonised their countries, committed genocides, and who are still benefitting from ongoing exploitation

@Stefwill @researchfairy and honestly, just look at the effect that the name choice had. "ubuntu" isn't just any old word, it is a name for a whole philosophy, and when Black people talk about it, white folks think they're talking about computers.

it's super disrespectful. it would be questionable to name a big software project, idk, "Jesus"

and people would be insulted but it wouldn't be as harmful because everyone knows what Jesus actually is outside this context
