@hethwill
Clearly.
@Volko @hethwill What I really like about Philip Sabin’s academic work is how he shows the value of this sort of counterfactual thinking. And when I was in the IC, I personally found it to be one of the best toolsets available to an analyst.

@Joementum @hethwill
Absolutely.

Among my last efforts in the US IC before retirement was to expand analysts' familiarity with that toolset.

@Volko @Joementum I do like Sabin's, especially Lost Battles, in the way he juggles with the fictional to discover why the fact recorded happened. While many might not like it, given it is analyst work, it is undeniably good in understanding why the battles were won and lost.

@hethwill @Volko @Joementum

It is a framework that I come back to again and again.

For example, I think Sabin's modelling of deployment is genius, demonstrating the importance of having a force capable of securing positions key to gaining the upper hand in an engagement. And he makes it quick and fun.

Yet, we often skip this critical phase on the gaming table.

@sy @Volko @Joementum Funny you mention that and so few games respond to the hypothetical operational level by gaming the point of arrival at the battlefield. Order of march being a mini game example that can be explored.

@hethwill @Volko @Joementum

Yeah, exactly this. How else could it have worked?

But I have to admit to being fully indoctrinated into Professor Sabin's way of thinking for a little while now, so maybe I am a tiny bit biased...

@sy @Volko @Joementum There's only to gain with that. I must confess that this year best game for me is Mark Backhouse 'Strength & Honour' for a variety of reasons but is such a good healthy proposal that actually simulates without being crunch dumb.
I almost say it is Lost Battles in another way.

@hethwill @Volko @Joementum

It's weird - we always believed in Mark's product, but I have never played Mark's rules (please don't tell him)!

We had just finished our own epic journey in that scale and moved on to other things when Mark's rules were released.

But you offer very high praise indeed. Noted.

@sy Oh no !!! *laughs* That is such a common occurrence in the hobby.
I am certain you will.
I know he will be putting up a 1:1 Cannae in Salute ( guess the expansion is going to cover punic wars ). That's insane.

@hethwill
Heheh!

Yeah, a 1:1 of Cannae. I will be very interested in how Mark plays that out. In a positive, supportive way, of course!

We did look at doing Cannae at that scale but decided it was better done as a board game.

The ground scales and command and control mechanisms stretch the bounds of credibility, and at that point, you start to challenge the 'historical record', and then you ask, 'Is this fun?'

Look forward to seeing Mark's take on it if I can.

@sy Yeah it is daunting but given the 2mm it is doable I think, but definitely not in a home space unless a dedicated big table. 84k, probably 16 bases in S&H. Each base is a full legion or similar formation/space.
