This young network engineer at Project Waves is doing amazing things in Baltimore

My story here on how Devin Weaver designed, built, and operates a #communitybroadband network that brings free gig speed #Internet service to low-income apartment buildings in one of the nation's most disconnected cities

Making Waves in Baltimore with Community-Driven Connectivity | Welcome to Community Networks

Profile on the people behind Project Waves, a non-profit organization founded in 2018 to bring broadband to mostly low-income households in Baltimore City.

@seanalan I *LOVE* these anti-capitalist infra projects.

Yes, municipalities should be the ones doing this work, but I understand that we're working in a capitalistic system, and as such, we need to make concessions when it comes to doing the work that government should be owning.

But I absolutely love the idea of breaking up the telco monopoly when it comes to internet services.

This makes me *so* happy.

@seanalan
Now THIS is an example of a tech innovator disrupting the status quo for equity.

I got into a mild fight with a girlfriend who thinks tech can be used for social impact. But her POV was very...#SocEnt (social enterprise) and I rolled my eyes hard.

I don't think Big Tech has the ability to do anything but build better mousetraps much less end inequity.

She accused me of being myopic in my thinking about Tech. Maybe. But maybe not.

@DeliaChristina well said and I wholeheartedly agree. And nothing you said is myopic - your eyes are wide awoke on this ✊🏾

@seanalan
Ha! I've been around a few threeway partnerships between govt+philanthropy+tech. I've seen some things.

This is another one of those stories that sounds hearwarming at first, but then you realize that the fact that this is necessary is an outrage.

Broadband service used to be considered a luxury, but is now as vital as any public utility.

Add to that the fact that cable industry lobbyists have managed to make coops like this illegal in most of the country. All the power to Devin for helping low income people access the basic tools of survival in the modern age.

@crswa great points. It’s both - inspiring on the part of Devin & infuriating it’s come to this. Internet access is a public utility & you are spot on abt Big Telecom getting laws passed to protect the monopolies none of us love. There are 17 states w/preemption laws that either prohibit or make it impossibly difficulty for municipalities bldg Internet infrastructure. We’ve spilled tons of ink on that

The State of State Preemption – Seventeen is the Number | Welcome to Community Networks

In years past, states have implemented preemptive laws that make it more difficult or impossible for communities to build their own Internet networks.

@seanalan I’m not saying that I couldn’t do this, I am saying he did this. I am not his equal.
@seanalan this is so wonderful on so many levels! Good going!
@seanalan really great framing of monopolies as part of the problem with fighting digital divides. Far too overlooked.
@seanalan @martyp What a cool project! Love it. πŸ₯°

@seanalan

YES! BOOOM! Fantastic work, fantastic leadership!

Hay tipped.

@seanalan Do you know how they managed to connect those to the internet backbone? Because that is the biggest issue, IIRC.
@yuki2501 they ran fiber to the buildings but not sure who their back haul/middle mile provider is. Middle mile connectivity is an issue in some areas not typically in urban areas. But last mile connectivity is the BIG issue when it comes to delivering service to residential and business addresses
@seanalan Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying that.
