Making Waves in Baltimore with Community-Driven Connectivity | Welcome to Community Networks

Profile on the people behind Project Waves, a non-profit organization founded in 2018 to bring broadband to mostly low-income households in Baltimore City.

@seanalan
This is another one of those stories that sounds hearwarming at first, but then you realize that the fact that this is necessary is an outrage.

Broadband service used to be considered a luxury, but is now as vital as any public utility.

Add to that the fact that cable industry lobbyists have managed to make coops like this illegal in most of the country. All the power to Devin for helping low income people access the basic tools of survival in the modern age.

@crswa great points. Itโ€™s both - inspiring on the part of Devin & infuriating itโ€™s come to this. Internet access is a public utility & you are spot on abt Big Telecom getting laws passed to protect the monopolies none of us love. There are 17 states w/preemption laws that either prohibit or make it impossibly difficulty for municipalities bldg Internet infrastructure. Weโ€™ve spilled tons of ink on that

The State of State Preemption โ€“ Seventeen is the Number | Welcome to Community Networks

In years past, states have implemented preemptive laws that make it more difficult or impossible for communities to build their own Internet networks.
