Even the current iPad Pro pricing is hard to justify, as it's evolved more towards 'Mac clone, but worse’ over recent years and away from 'the future of computing’, magnifying its flaws and the limitations/restrictions of its ecosystem. Doubling the price from where it is today seems unconscionable https://9to5mac.com/2023/03/09/oled-ipad-pro-launch-price/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon
Apple reportedly planning major price increase for OLED iPad Pro

Apple is widely expected to debut its first iPad Pro models with OLED displays sometime next year. In the lead-up...

@stroughtonsmith After 4-5 years of non-existing iPad Pro hardware updates, I was briefly considering the possibility of buying a new model with an OLED screen. But for this price? Hard pass.
@stroughtonsmith Was thinking about finally updating my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” when the OLED models came out. For double the price I’ll stick with my 2018 model
@stroughtonsmith why not just not adopt OLED until prices come down? This makes little sense. Who feels the current iPad Pro displays aren't good enough?
@Lampa @stroughtonsmith I mean, what else can they do with the hardware other than turn it into a keyboard-less touchscreen Mac at this point?
@stroughtonsmith don't forget to add the $300+ keyboard!
@paul @stroughtonsmith that’s 300 dollars of joy injected right into my veins.
This indicates to me is that the new generation iPad Pro will be marketed as a dual Mac laptop/iPad device… @paul @stroughtonsmith
@stroughtonsmith I know it's sacrilege to so many, but if you're gonna charge $1800 for a tablet I want full macOS on it. Let me put it in Desktop mode for when I have it connected to a keyboard & mouse case and a Tablet mode for when I want the other stuff.
@stroughtonsmith Unless they bring macOS to the iPad Pro in some shape or form I find those prices a very hard pill to swallow. I don’t think iPadOS is close enough to provide the right experience to justify these prices.
@stroughtonsmith Yeah, that’s a hard pass for me if true. I already have zero incentive to upgrade my 2018 12”pro because that hardware is STILL overpowered for what it’s allowed to do, software-wise
@stroughtonsmith at that price, it’s got to come with 2 usb-c/Thunderbolt ports and run macOS too, right? Could at least justify some of the jump.
@stroughtonsmith I can’t ever see myself buying an iPad Pro again, if the price almost doubles, just to get an OLED. I’ve got the 2018, and nothing since its launch has lived up to the promise, not enticed me to upgrade.
I don’t exactly want to drop the 120Hz ProMotion display to get a cheaper iPad Air. I’ll just use my 2018 until it’s done with.
@stroughtonsmith Seems like this sketchy rumor is just rant bait for those unhappy with the iPad Pro as it is. I love mine, but then my "pro" uses fit within its limitations. Conflating professional with premium is part of the problem, whether its a phone, earbuds, or a tablet.
@stroughtonsmith Wut? Those would be rather ridiculous prices, almost like some print mistake. Maybe they meant fully loaded iPads with large storage?
@stroughtonsmith it reminds me of gaming on the Mac: they know it can, they just seem perennially unable to figure out how
@stroughtonsmith Just a few years ago the base iPad was nicely affordable and then Apple decided to start raising price 😒

@stroughtonsmith tell me it’s a slow news day at 9-to-5 without telling me it’s a slow news day.🤣😂

That said, commenting on rumored prices without any idea of the complete set of features…we’ve all gone down this futile road before. Better to slam 9-5 for publishing such tripe.

However, when it’s time to upgrade, prices will be paid if the featureset or the forecasted featureset makes sense.

Perhaps Apple is trying to get some of the lost revenue from the current crop of iPad Pros. 😅

@stroughtonsmith never mind this is the end of iPad @mgs
@stroughtonsmith replace $ with € and this sounds less ridiculous than it has any right to :(
@stroughtonsmith this feels like a case of softening a price increase by leaking a super high price increase
@stroughtonsmith I want to believe that Apple has a team working on a unified OS for the Mac and iPad. And that is why the progress on both macOS and iPadOS has been such a mess.
@stroughtonsmith oh wow. This pricing looks ridiculous event if they provide macOS level operating system for the Pros.

@stroughtonsmith @viticci I sold my pro some time ago and got an M1 MBA which I loved.

Sold it and got an M2 iPad with the Magic Keyboard, which was more expensive and heavier than the Mac.

I like the iPad but limitations really get in the way. Besides the fact that coding there is impossible.

@stroughtonsmith @viticci I love my iPad Pro (typing on it right now with a physical keyboard and trackpad AND I’m using Stage Manager because I’m a madman)…but I don’t love it enough for $1,500.
@stroughtonsmith Only way I could see this become a viable option is if they both become foldables
@stroughtonsmith don’t worry, the other shoe will drop.

@stroughtonsmith

I have an 12.9” iPad Pro M1 1Tb. Love it. Apple made a device my MIL can use and still appeals to me, a software dev.

Use it daily. All the time.

@stroughtonsmith

By the way, remember all the rumors about the original iPad costing $999?

When will we learn?

@davidhmccoy it costs more than that today 😅 Times change

@stroughtonsmith

It does. But it also suggests that we’re not so quick to believe pricing rumors.

Regardless, I just fundamentally, but respectfully, disagree with your assessment of the iPad.

I think it is a great device. No regrets about my M1 and it wasn’t cheap. Glad. Cheap rarely seems to work out.

@stroughtonsmith I predict that if Apple adopts this pricing structure we will see the beginning of a long decline and eventual death of the iPad. The iPad is a severely handicapped platform that is a complete pain in the ass to use for mainstream creation and productivity apps. There is nothing “Pro” about any iPad except the price—it’s beautiful hardware with lousy software and a crippled OS.
@stroughtonsmith i know apple stuff gets more expensive, but I cannot believe that pricing.
@stroughtonsmith You’d think with the high inflation that people wouldn’t be interested, but Apple seems to have figured out that people will pay ever higher prices for their new devices. I’d say to just get a Mac for that price.
@stroughtonsmith my 12.9” iPad is my sole device, if the price doubles, I’ll be done….
