Tweetbot and Twitterrific Face the Cliff

There is something noble about two longtime rivals — competitors, yes, but with nothing but deep respect and camaraderie for each other — facing this terrible cliff together, with dignity and grace, considering their users first, as ever.

Daring Fireball
@gruber You have: “the carpet out from other them”
@gruber Also: “surely assume that they money they’ve spent”
@gruber Wish there was more clarity about what happens if I migrate my subscription from Tweetbot to Ivory, considering I also paid for an Ivory subscription. Any insight @paul @ivory?
@fishcharlie @gruber @paul @ivory I think in that case you're just supposed to cancel your Tweetbot subscription, as your Ivory subscription is already active like you said
@gruber thanks for the article, I had no idea refunds were automatic, I had to redownload the app to decline!
@gruber I’m curious if Apple had to do anything on the app store’s back end to facilitate these options.
@gruber Now where's the DF Mastodon Tootbot? :)
@mattisenhower @gruber I’ve been using @daringfireball until an official one appears.
@gruber Was a no-brainer for me to "donate" the rest of my Tweetbot subscription to Tapbots.
@gruber Any update on the @daringfireball bot?
@jpgoulet Soon, I hope, but things I feel I need to write remain ahead of it.

@gruber A note from my experience: when I updated and opened the Tweetbot iPad app, I still did not see the pop-up about subscription refund options. I had to update and open the app on iPhone to tap the “I don’t need a refund” button.

Which I did without hesitation. I’ve already paid for Ivory, and over the years I’ve gotten more value than I’ve paid for from Tapbots apps. I hope the company gets through this OK.

@ByMatthewPorter That’s weird! Maybe a bug? The screenshots I posted were from Tweetbot on iPad.
@gruber it’s unclear to me what happens to those who are subscribed monthly. Probably worth me downloading and finding out
@gruber ok even if you had a monthly subscription they will automatically do the prorated refund if you don’t opt out, so everyone should do this and subscribe to Ivory

@gruber thank you for posting this.

Since my Tweetbot subscription was over in early Feb, I figured this wasn’t even an option for me. But after reading your article, I downloaded Tweetbot again and was happy to smash that “I don’t need a refund” button for the final 3 weeks of my subscription.

I hope more people do the same because I cannot imagine how impactful this has been for @tapbots and I love their apps so much!

@gruber Thanks, I’d assumed I could just not claim a refund. Have now actively declined it.

Seems worth noting that Apple also has some agency here. It might want to exercise some discretion to avoid setting an awkward precedent, but they could do a lot to limit the damage in these extraordinary circumstances.

@gruber Typo @gruber: “…refund surely assume that they money they’ve spent…”
@gruber Done and done. Thank you again for highlighting this. It genuinely skipped my attention.
@gruber wow, thanks for posting this! I had no idea it would be automatic. Redownloaded and opted out.
@gruber Thanks for sharing this John.
@gruber Good to know, I uninstalled my Tweetbot, but I don’t need a refund.

@gruber I love this footnote: «The only thing Musk has successfully done with Twitter is twist it into a company in his own mold, utterly devoid of the most essential of human qualities: honesty, grace, and empathy. »

Amen to that.

@gruber I know it’s a serious subject, but I LOVE “Phony Stark”!! Bravo 👏🏾👏🏾
@Craktok Let’s make it a thing. Keep using it!
@gruber consider it done.
@gruber I had no idea about this. I moved to @ivory when they made the beta available. Had to re-download to decline the refund. Thanks for the heads up.
@gruber thanks for this - i had deleted tweetbot. Re-installed and chose no refund for sure!
@gruber Did this. Space Karen can shove his social media company straight up his 5-hole; @tapbots and @Iconfactory are far more important and useful companies who deserve my money.
@gruber Thanks for the reminder, John. The last people I want to see hurt by the royal shitlord are Tapbots.
@gruber thanks for posting. Had to redownload tweetbot to decline refund. Happily on ivory now
@gruber ouch. The refund being automatic with an in app opt out for an app most users have deleted it not a good situation. Hopefully your post helps get some reinstalls.
@gruber boosted. I was lucky enough to have a renewal come up just after the shutdown, and so cancelled the renewal and Tapbots owe me nothing. But for the many years of good times, and those still to come on Ivory, it’s the least I can do to help them out.
@gruber thanks for the pointer. Just did it.
@gruber thanks for this. I had tried Ivory, but not subscribed. Your post pushed me to do so. You have no skin in the game, but are putting your reputational capital at work to help these two companies. That’s noble of you. Much appreciated.
@jfournier My akin in the game is tangential, but important to me: I depend on software from both companies, and want to see them thrive.
@gruber can anyone beat this awful timing for renewal?
@mhbaker We should have a lotto! You’re going to be tough to beat.
@gruber Really appreciate you posting this. I happily reinstalled the app and tapped the “I Don’t Need a Refund” button but I wouldn’t have known to do that without your post.
@gruber Done! Thanks for the prompt, John. I had 320 days left on my subscription. Nice warm feeling. ☺️
@bitrot Like I wrote, buy yourself a treat. 👍

@gruber Done.

Musk is a chickenshit dilettante. May Ivory (and whatever the Icon Factory does next) find new heights of success as his kingdom burns.

@gruber done and done.

Btw, fuck Elon.

@gruber thanks, this is an especially important message to get out, especially the bits about actively saying you don't need a refund.

Would you consider adding a hashtag or two so Mastodon's search would turn it up later? Maybe #twitterific and #tweetbot?

@kentbrew I despise hashtags.
@gruber @kentbrew I have hashtag blindness. When I read a toot I skip over hashtags.
@gruber even if they're down below and not sprinkled throughout the post? You're not reaching as wide an audience as you could be....
@gruber I suspect another great way to help is by not using the platform that destroyed countless small businesses out of the blue because of ego?
@hayden How does that help?
@gruber maintaining a presence on the platform that has done something you consider heavily immoral when viable alternatives exist just continues the issue at hand imho.
@hayden @gruber
Also, Twitter doesn't support self-verified "rel=me" links on profiles. Every other social media platform, including @spacehey , does by default.
@gruber since opting out of refunds also benefits Apple--it would be cool if they returned the favor and picked up the tab for the refunds Tapbots and Iconfactory need to provide. It maybe not be their responsibility, but both companies have been exemplars of the benefits of building on top of the Apple ecosystem.
@larryroth @gruber
Apple and financial responsibility?
LOL .EU
@gruber yup- fully agree - don’t need the refund and already subbed to @ivory !
@gruber Big thumbs up for this post, declining a refund is the least I can do for years of service from a great app. I uninstalled Tweetbot a couple of weeks ago, I never would have known otherwise.
