Was It Really Progress, Tho?

@museumofportablesound Think we could add something there about the lack of sustainability with streaming and the huge server infrastructure required to keep it going. Especially coupled with "lossless" quality data rates.
@tomthistle Absolutely. The shift to streaming involves more problems than can be effectively argued within the span of a single toot.
@tomthistle We focused on the immediate impact to the consumer since that's the POV of the billboards.
@museumofportablesound I’m focused on how the devices are so much smaller now they actually fit on the billboard

@museumofportablesound
Strictly from a consumer standpoint, streaming is amazing. For what has remained a low subscription price for the over a decade that I've been streaming, I have access to practically anything I want through a data service I would be paying for anyway on a device I would be paying for anyway.

I am not tied down to the music that I own, so my tastes are allowed to grow and drift all over the place.

@museumofportablesound
You can argue about all of the "hidden" issues within the streaming music industry, but from a consumer standpoint it is clearly better and it's proven by just how many people have abandoned the ownership model in favor of subscription services.

You might change your mind when you open the app one day and there are songs randomly missing from your playlists. Except it's not random, it's disappeared because Apple no longer has the rights to include it on its service. That's not something that's possible when you can purchase the actual lossless audio files and download them to your disk.

I’ve seen it happen on a very limited basis and it really wasn’t that big of a deal. I mean, one of my favorite bands only became available on streaming within the last few years and even that wasn’t a big deal because there was SO MUCh more available.

There are worse things in the world than being forced to grow and adapt.

@museumofportablesound Owned many iPods, too old for music now but having as many songs as I want would have been an attractive proposition. Started with Sony Walkman & cassettes, iPod was a revelation. Same with photography, my main obsession, love taking photos around the world then having them appear on all my devices & sent to my kids in iMessages. Can’t go back, I’m afraid 🙁
@museumofportablesound I subscribe to no streaming services, and I listen to music I purchased between 1985 and 2023 all the time on my own devices, with no network or data connection needed. I prefer it that way.
