So last night we concluded our yearly project of trying to watch all the nominees for Best Picture (really an excuse to watch a bunch of movies since the Oscars are trash and the actual ceremony will no doubt be disappointing) - so now I get to do the second funnest part after making a big spreadsheet - ranking them! Thread: #oscars #movies #film #oscarWatch
10:
Top Gun: Maverick - “he pressed the fire control - and the Suppressive Persons exploded” This is basically Top Gun: the next generation hung around the plot from Iron Eagle II and as stupid as that sounds. Kind of wish I’d seen it in IMAX where the plane stuff would be more impressive, as is I’m scratching my head why people went so loopy for it. Much debate in this house as to if Jon Hamm is playing his role ironically. #topGun #maverick #tomCruse #ironEagle

Avatar: the Way of Water - I like these movies fine? They are basucally Disnsy pics with simple Disney morality Way longer than it should be and they need to find a new plot point beyond “the kids get captured”. The VFX awards should be completely in the bag, and the Oscar for “most money” but like Top Gun I can’t imagine what it’s doing here other than that. #avatar #smurfs #fernGully #vfx #money
8:
The Fabelmans - basically an extended episode of “The Wonder Years”. A syrupy version of the early years of Spielberg life just isn’t that interesting to me. The last scene is great though. #stevenSpielberg #TheFablemans #wonderOfCinema #davidLynch
7.
The Banshees of Innershin - do not watch with elderly relatives expecting a Last of the Summer Wine meets Father Ted type thing. It’s totally that, but with intermittent gory mutilation as well. May be a parable of some kind. Won big at the Golden Globes for some reason. #fatherTed #lastOfTheSummerWine #bodyHorror #fingers
6.
All Quiet on the Western front - war… is bad. WWI baddest of all - except maybe Vietnam. Per movies they were both very wet which seems to be the hardest thing of all. Manages to make the French terrifying. #AllQuietOnTheWesternFront #war #wwi #tanks #trenches #eggs
5
Elvis - extreme Baz Luhrmann. The first half is a Romp, and I particularly enjoy the scenes with the Colonel creeping around the edges like literal Satan waiting to set up a deal. Loosely speaking a biopic so like all of them tapers off towards the end but does include an amazing extended sequence about the 1968 Christmas Special - which is also amazing and you should see it. #elvis #theColonel #music #biopic #walkHard
4.
Triangle of Sadness - for me the middle ranked entry in the 2023 Shitty Rich People Cinematic Universe trilogy, above Glass Onion but below The Menu. The best bits are on the boat, with what comes after feeling a little “we are having An Allegory”, but it’s funny as hell throughout. #triangleOfSadness #richPeople #socialism
@arthurwyatt I really wanted to like this, but I did not find it funny and wanted everyone to die.
@swizzlevixen it was definitely not a “liking any of the characters” kind of a film. Except maybe Captain Woody Harrelson, he’s fun.
@arthurwyatt I have a hard time with not liking anybody I guess. Terrible people being terrible to each other is not my jam. Except for maybe Arrested Development.
@swizzlevixen Tar is also a terrible person film, but a very watchable terrible person.
