Per the doctor's orders, the bandage came off my incision yesterday. Looks good (as well as a several inch incision that was sealed back up can look!). I can finally shower today (yah!).
The only thing is... I knew this was coming, but I'm getting itchy around the incision. Hopefully, I won't need a cone around my head to keep me from scratching, lol. #surgery #neckfusion #kingofthehill #hankhill #dalegribble #boomhauer #yup
So I've been back to work for two days now. I mostly #WFH, so at least I could come back sooner since I'm still not cleared for driving. My periodic onsite work is covered by my awesome coworkers until I get cleared.
By the end of the day today, I started feeling a lump in my throat. I don't feel ill, and I'm not having any issues with breathing or swallowing. I've had it on and off since the #surgery about a week ago, but it's more noticeable now. My wife checked online and pretty much confirmed that a #neckfusion / #cervicalfusion can cause this feeling for up to 6 months.
Does anyone else have experience with this? It's not surprising since a 2-inch incision was made on the front-left side of my neck, and various parts within were shifted to get to the #herniateddisc on the right side of my neck. I assume it's something I just need to ride out, but any advice, if possible, is appreciated. #medical #medicalquestion #medicalhelp
I saw my surgeon for a post-surgical #neckfusion follow-up last week. The steri-strips came off, and I was cleared to drive and lift up to ~15 lbs again. After another 2 weeks, I can bump it up to 25 lbs.
I have my next appointment in a few weeks. I'll also be seeing my otolaryngologist the same day. My neurosurgeon said I should be cleared for the #adenoidectomy, so I'm hoping that I can get scheduled asap.
I've already had a noticeable difference. I have almost zero pain in my neck/back/shoulders/arms. It only flares a little if I start pushing my weight lifting limits, but goes back to normal with some rest. Driving and walking for even extended periods doesn't hurt anymore.
I'm looking to get back to exercising once I'm healed enough from the neck fusion and upcoming adenoidectomy. Between no more pain or sleep apnea, I should finally have the energy to do it.
@thefyuuri oooooof I bet that was painful.
Is that the procedure where vertebrae or discs are fused together to stop other pain?
@thefyuuri good to hear it reduced pain! That sounds very positive. That whole thing is scary to me, and I may have to have some sort of procedure on my disc and nerve issues some day. An MRI showed me some disc and nerve issues like 10+ years ago, but I never handled it.
My crap started to flare up last year, after... sheltering from COVID 3 years and sitting at a desk wayyyyy too much during that time. Had super crazy pain in my right shoulder, arm, neck, under my right shoulder blade, and I am right handed. I could barely move a mouse for a few weeks and I wasnt sleeping.
A lot of it was from being super tense and playing competitive games for, lol 25+ years, and I put off treatment for it due to COVID exposure risk. Fortunately the pain vanished about 4 months ago and I have no idea why, but... Im pretty sure it will come back again. Maybe Im cured??? haha Overwatch2 time. ; )
@Milkman76, do be careful. My first flare-up was about 2 years ago after doing physical inventory at work. All the bending of my neck and probably lifting set it off. I only got over it by resting for a while and not lifting heavy things.
I was okay for a while but then lifted something too heavy again last year and set it off again. Only after my wife figured out my neck was the problem (I initially thought it was my back) and I finally got an MRI that I found out about the herniated disc.
@thefyuuri Im really focused on being careful, now. After the injuries, there was this sudden motivation to lift properly. 😆
I was somewhat careless a few years ago and also lifted something heavy at work that injured me. (a bankers box filled with documents). I wound up with a 'thoracic strain' that time, and that was on top of my decades of wear and tear on arm/hand/wrist/shoulder. Hurt so bad I couldnt take a deep breath for 4-5 days and was on hardcore pain meds.
Its really, really important to lift properly, and I try to say this to a lot of people at work (when Im working) and in my personal life. You dont really grasp HOW important it is until you fuck something up once, and get to live with that for a while. Pain from those areas can be so intense it causes nauseousness and overall disability. Like, I was having trouble mowing the lawn, trimming bushes, doing basic house work.
Its good that you got some treatment and improved the pain! My stuff magically (I have no idea why) improved about 6 months ago and allowed me to, lol, go back to using a mouse 8+ hours a day, but Im just waiting for it to flare up again.
@thefyuuri did you learn more about this? My wife says its probably globus sensation, which can happen due to injury to the area, anxiety, or other neuro causes. I also had globus sensation for a year or so, way back in like 2009 during a bout of intense anxiety and stress that I worked through. My wife (MS sufferer) has had the sensation due to neuro stuff + anxiety about it.
It can be super annoying and it makes you want to swallow into it a lot, but hard swallowing will make it worse. I used to try to swallow it, and apparently I was perpetuating it. Hope yours is gone/improving!
