Book 2: “Cat Burglar Black” by #RichardSala.

I saw some of his art online and thought it looked like “Invisible Hands” from Liquid Television, which I LOVED. Same artist! This didn’t have quite the same level of twisted, creepiness as that animated series, but I was so happy to find his work in comic form. There’s more too.

Someone stitched together all the “#InvisibleHands”. The voice acting is 🤌🏽 https://youtu.be/n5sP4yRb8Mw

Book 3: "Men I Trust" by #TommiParrish.

Always loved Parrish's art: painted panels, odd proportions and perspective. This was kind of a bummer for me, but their art makes me want to break more "rules" with mine.

Book 4: “Wool” by #HughHowey.

Refreshingly simple premise about a dystopian future where people live inside a silo their entire lives. The author wasn’t up to writing the inevitable “action set piece” as compellingly as the quieter parts of the book, and the ending felt a tad rushed, but I enjoyed it. Will read the remaining books in the trilogy.

Book 5: “The Town of Babylon” by #AlejandroVarela.

A gay Latino returns home to the suburbs for a high school reunion and encounters key people from his past. Narrator alternates between 1st person to describe scenes and 3rd person to analyze social inequities. After a while, it feels a little like the kind of defensive writing people do on social media: it’s not enough to tell a story; you have to demonstrate your grasp of the conditions that led to it.

I'm moving my 2023 book thread to #Bookwyrm, the Fediverse equivalent of Goodreads. Apparently, you can see/interact with Bookwyrm posts from Mastodon and vice versa but it took me awhile to figure out how:

I had to follow my Bookwyrm account from here + (optionally?) vice versa. Now I can Boost my Bookwyrm posts into Mastodon for you to see. Gonna try it in a few...

@ottsatwork @bookstodon yes but it takes days for the posts to appear here, in my experience...
@kiarazard @bookstodon That's what it was like initially, but my post on Bookwyrm appeared in my Mastodon feed instantly! 🥳

Social Reading and Reviewing

@mikester @kiarazard Nice! Let’s add tons of books. 🤓

The Comment feature for each book is interesting: I’ve seen people use it to share thoughts about specific places in the book as they’re reading. I don’t know that I’ll get into it at that level, but I think it’s neat.

@ottsatwork @kiarazard I never actively used goodreads, so I have a feeling bookwyrm will be similarly dormant for me :-/
@kiarazard @ottsatwork @bookstodon I never see mine. Wonder if we should tag ourselves?

@Tarheel @kiarazard @bookstodon And you followed each of your accounts from both Bookwyrm and Mastodon? The only other thing I can think of is it might be something in your particular servers (on either platform).

I'm still learning all of this, but I think that's the whole point of the ActivityPub protocol is interoperability across all these platforms. In my test just now, it's not fully baked for my needs.

@Tarheel @ottsatwork @bookstodon I tagged the bookstodon group in my last post but it never showed up. My posts from bookwyrm.social appeared on mastodon a few days after I posted them there. I decided to try another instance and used ramblingreaders.org and when I posted there it never appeared on mastodon (my profile is visible but no posts). I'll try again when I finish the book I'm reading!

@Tarheel @kiarazard If it helps, even when I did other stuff on Bookwyrm, like adding a “Want to read” status to a book, it appeared in my Mastodon feed. You could try stuff like that instead of a review to see if it shows up in your feed.

Keep at it! I feel like it’s a small project and the developers seem open to feedback. Maybe all of these issues will get addressed. 🤞🏽
