🧵 Cinema posters by Mancunian illustrator Tom Chantrell. So many iconic images, yet most people don't know his name. He worked from 1938 through to the 1990s.

Tom Chantrell posters #2. Early in his career he worked on posters for Brighton Rock and East of Eden. In the 60s he illustrated several Carry On and Hammer Film posters. (He also did many fabulous B-movie horror and sexploitation posters).
He also illustrated book covers: Denis Gifford's legendary Pictorial History of Horror Movies, as well as annuals for programmes such as Crackerjack, The Avengers and Mission: Impossible.

Finally, here's Tom Chantrell himself holding up his incomplete illustration for the original Star Wars poster in 1977. Last week, one of these posters sold at Sotheby's for £11,430.
Oops! I forgot his iconic album covers for the Music for Pleasure label.

@Richard_Littler what’s Three Days of the Condor doing on the “Big Terror” album? I love that film.
@Richard_Littler have the war movies one and I think a western one too.
@Richard_Littler how did I not know of this great artist? Especially as a fellow Mancunian! https://youtube.com/watch?v=aYB0r2Y7QNY

@Richard_Littler The Quartermass poster is awesome. And he really captures the Carry On folks quite well.
@Richard_Littler I only just discovered him after reading about his posters for the Doctor Who and the Daleks movie - great seeing his other stuff!

I didn’t know the term mancunian. I’d never heard of Chantrell. When I think of movie posters, I think of this type of illustration. Thanks for the thread!

@Richard_Littler
I'm disappointed by the *Devil Rides Out* poster. That movie was a TRIP. The poster doesn't meet that energy.

But *The Land That Time Forgot* certainly makes up for it. That's an awesome poster.

@Richard_Littler Just adore those old school days movie posters. Art form almost gone. :(
