I think I might have settled on a name. Now I just need to test it, see how badly Germans will mispronounce it and if they'll gender it correctly.

It's Emilis. The Lithuanian form of Emil/Emilio/you get the idea :)

If I get too annoyed with correcting people, I might resort to Elias. It's not as meaningful to me, but it'd make my life easier lol.

#Trans folks, tell me your stories! How did you come up with a name? If you picked a less common one, are you happy with your choice?

(Would also love to hear cis folks' stories about how you changed your names as adults. It may not be as commonly discussed but I know you exist 🙂)
@cupoftea my process was pretty impersonal? At first i chose something close to my deadname so it's easier on the family (spooler - it wasn't) and then changed it again to one of the most popular names for my age group in the country i was moving to. Literally looked up a list and picked one i liked. (also that first name is very uncommon and doesn't have an equivalent in any of the languages spoken here, so double win)
@o1vr yeah, totally understand the convenience reasons. I'm glad the second choice worked out well for you :)

@cupoftea Having come out "officially" this morning with a big Fb post, I've been thinking about names for a while.

Not ready to actually start using my new name / pronouns yet. I want to see how HRT goes.

My new first name is private; my family knows, but it's something meaningful to me, that connects me to both my maternal & paternal grandmothers. My first middle name is the feminine variant of my current middle name, which is my father's name. My second middle name is the name my late mother told me when I was young that she would have given me had I been AFAB.

@grissallia yep, feel you on wanting to see how HRT goes first. It will change how I look and how people see me so what if my preferences in names (and pronouns) shift too 🤔
Congrats on coming out!
@cupoftea It's never been much of a question to me which name to pick. I was named after my grandfather, and it is a very cherished bond for me.

@cupoftea I came across mine almost by accident, honestly. My sister was talking about Faith something or other church and I went "Oh, Faith. That's a girl's name. I kinda like it." It also has a lot of meaning for me, personally, with transition as I feel like the whole process has been a giant leap of faith.

Prior to that, I tried REALLY hard to find a girl's name I liked that started with J. Played with Jessica for a while but my wife hated it. (Too much childhood trauma associated with girls named Jessica.) I played around with a few other ideas and scoured baby name sites for months and couldn't come up with a J name I liked. Then I came across Faith and it stuck.

@faithisleaping Love the meaning behind your name. Funny how things sometimes work out in ways we least expect :)

I like how Emil(is) means "ambitious" or "stubborn", among other things, and I'm stubborn as heck.
