@actuallyautistic How many of us #ActuallyAutistic folks have every day, run of the mill noise triggers? By that I mean, say, one that can't stand the sound of grating cheese, or brushing your teeth? Mine is the vacuum... it just cuts right through me, triggers instant anxiety, even when I'm the one doing the vacuuming, and has a really good chance of making me snap at the next person I talk to.. I recognize that it's important, that most people do it, and that it's a fairly common one. Without going into details, sweeping isn't a viable alternative for us. Not really looking for solutions, just curious to learn about people in our little community. What's your trigger, do just deal with it, or did/do you find ways to avoid it?

@cinja @actuallyautistic My flatscreen TV makes a barely-audible sound that to my ears nonetheless sounds almost identical to the tone of a classic bell-style fire alarm clanging (though in this case it is a steady sound, not rhythmic). This sound is distorted/overrode somewhat by actually watching something but the sound persists whenever it is on and leaves me highly anxious. 😬

When alone, I never use the TV anymore to watch something entirely due to this.

@cinja @actuallyautistic I have misophonia and have several of these! Including chewing/mouth sounds & clinking silverware on dishes.
@cinja @actuallyautistic oh and how I deal with it is removing myself from the other person if it gets too bad, or focusing on another sound if I can't get away.
@cinja @actuallyautistic Let's see... I can't be in the same small to medium size building as a running vacuum cleaner. I need industrial noise protection earmuffs to run a blender or a garbage disposal. If there are lawnmowers or leafblowers running outside and I can't escape or sufficiently block them out within a minute or two, my whole day is shot; I keep multiple pairs of earmuffs/headphones hanging right by my bed and some earplugs nearby for that specific reason.
@polyplacophora @actuallyautistic Small engine yard maintenance machines are the worst.. and so common. We live in a neighborhood that's largely comprised of the retired.. in the summer, we jokingly call them "the sounds of nature" while cringing at the same time.
@cinja @actuallyautistic
Anyone chewing with their mouth open.
@AlisonW @cinja @actuallyautistic At such moments I always imagine I have an axe...
@daswarkeinhuhn @cinja @actuallyautistic
Indeed, however killing one's mother tends to be frowned upon in nost circles, so I just have to put up with it. (She's 91)
@AlisonW @daswarkeinhuhn @cinja @actuallyautistic Sir Philip, he indulged in fratricide:
He killed his dad, and that was patricide;
One night I stand him by my mattress-side,
To keep my love alive.
@cinja @actuallyautistic I hate beeping sounds of the alarms, if I hear it even for a fraction of a second it disturbs me so much I want to cry...
@cinja @actuallyautistic The noise of radiators is annoying. And anything very loud. When a truck drives by, I'm speechless. I literally can't get a single sound out myself when it's loud around me.

@cinja @actuallyautistic Someone talking with their mouth full. This could include gum, but (in my case), it's usually actual food. It's pretty gross.

My ex-wife seems to be eating something every time I have to get on the phone with her, and I have a hard enough time understanding people who are talking on the phone.
