#Fiberuary - #Texture

Eye of Partridge was one of the first texture stitch patterns, that I learned and it always reminds me of my grandmother, who's 114th birthday would be today - she died 19 years ago.

This stitch pattern was one of her go-to patterns for sock heels. And when she taught me sock knitting, I learned that pattern.

Ooh! That's a wonderful stitch pattern for a heel. I have never liked the slipped stitch heel, that makes me think of a corrugated roof. But I really like the look of this one!
I use mainly the sweet tomato heel by Cat Bordhi with its three wedges, but when I want something else, this is a beautiful alternative!
@Giagia
Funny enough - my Grandmother deemed the slipped stitch heel more elegant and used that one for women's stockings and socks. Eye or Partridge was the more sturdy one and suitable for men.
@FanCityKnits I feel strong preferences in crafting are marvellous! They inject an element of personality. You could presumably pick up socks your grandmother knitted and be able to tell if they were meant for a man or woman. I really like the suggestion of using eye of partridge for heels, I had never considered a stitch for heels. I tried to do reverse stockinette once but couldn't get the sweet tomato heel to work, the technique produced unsightly "floats" at the piggyback places.

@Giagia

Oh, she definitely had her preferences. Dark colors for men, light colors for women. Men got always a few stripes in contrasting colors into the leg of the sock and the leg was completely ribbed. Women didn't get the stripes and the leg was stockinette after about 2 inches of ribbing.

But she did use self striping yarns in her last years.

She knit about 50 - 60 pairs of socks per year until she was more than 90 years old.

@FanCityKnits My gosh that's an amazing amount of knitting! Lovely that she liked self striping yarns later on. They must have been less taxing and maybe even more fun. The people in my family weren't knitters. One grandma did some cross stitch (those table cloth squares for the middle of a table. They came with preprinted motifs on them) and started a small rug from a kit. But no one did much knitting. It was my friends group who got me started. Love knitting.
@FanCityKnits I tend to use slip-stitch heels, but I do love the subtle texture of an eye of partridge heel.
@FanCityKnits @knitting @fiberarts I am Intrigued... I wonder if it could be adapted to be used with the Sweet Tomato Heel by #CatBordhi .... (I've already have done padded heels with STHs so I have *some* experience)

@Harena

You would need to adapt for the lost height. Maybe four wedges? I think the height loss is about 1/4 compared to stockinette stitch

@FanCityKnits

Ah, okay, thanks! I'm definitely going to try this at some point! :D

@FanCityKnits
I love that one for sock heels, too!

After knitting for 70 years, I finally learned Eye of Partridge stitch a few years ago. Where had it been all my life? You are the first person I've found who agrees (and even knows what it is!), it is The Best!
