Some Mastodon observations from my early experiences:

1. Like “old” Twitter
2. Replies are less frequent
3. Replies are less annoying
4. Fewer people get pop culture references here
5. Terrible for news or breaking news
6. Rarely infuriating
7. Still the best alternative as Twitter moves inexorably to the far right

@Jake_Vig Yep. 5. Whe need the journos to come.
@Jake_Vig
#6 is the selling point for me. I've actually purposely not refollowed the most tasteful people from Twitter because I realized how valuable the lower stress level is to me.
@Jake_Vig Hello, here's a reply, hopefully less annoying. My life is littered with examples of speaking with colleagues failing to understand my pop culture references. eg. #TerryGilliam
@Jake_Vig I get way more replies here, but my Social media foot print is tiny.

@Jake_Vig

"Terrible for news or breaking news" — for me this is a feature, not a bug.

@qburns @Jake_Vig yeah, this doesn't necessarily have to be a news website or a 1-1 twitter clone for that matter.
@Jake_Vig do you think the federated structure might help Mastodon NOT to turn into "new" Twitter? I think getting the right news is a question of following the right people, or being the right people who share the news on Mastodon. And that's perhaps the way it should be. You choose, not the algorithm. Don't give your power away so easily.

@Jake_Vig

8. Not as many follow-backs as Twitter

@Jake_Vig Yeah, I’ve noticed the dearth of breaking news so far as well.
@Jake_Vig I feel like twitter is just getting too extreme in both directions. It’s like everyone thinks their opinion is right and either don’t understand, or don’t want to have a discussion instead of an argument.
@tawksic in “both directions”? So the batshit crazy Nazi direction, and the scientific reasonable direction? Those two?
@Jake_Vig Whats with the tone man I was literally just talking about how people on here have discussions instead of arguments :/ If you approach ideas you don’t agree with or don’t understand with aggression, than no one wins. (By the way I don’t say “don’t understand” to imply that you aren’t as smart as me, I just probably didn’t explain myself well)
@Jake_Vig the main thing I miss is that pretty much all of the organization accounts here are bots relating their posts from Twitter so people rarely reply to their posts because they know that there is zero chance they will get a reply.
@Jake_Vig
The breaking news thing is the only reason I like the algorithm but not much I can do about it 😬
@Jake_Vig I rather prefer to use a good old RSS Reader for my news needs. Friendica (the platform that I'm writing from right now) does support subscribing to RSS links just like you would do on a regular account, yet I'd rather not have them mixed up with posts from others. It just feels like clutter to me, tbh. I follow accounts that do have an official account here on the fedi, and keep the rest on the RSS Reader, especially those websites I tend to access a lot.

@Jake_Vig Hardly any nazis or klan members
@Jake_Vig The lack of breaking news is the one thing that occasionally pulls me back.

@Jake_Vig And so much more inviting without all the neo-Nazis.

We could try to break news to each other quicker and more effectively 🤔

@Jake_Vig Do you know any news people I could follow?
@Jake_Vig
I use Tumblr of all things for breaking news
@Jake_Vig It’s a work in progress. Evolving.
