I will never be smug about my home state. We may be better than many, but then stuff like this arises:

Lawmakers propose letting Massachusetts prisoners donate organs for reduced sentences

Critics call the bill "perverse" and say it's like "harvesting organs."

@wiredog

I see someone already updated that Wikipedia page.

@jimgon If you can buy your way out of prison with organs, can you buy your way out with money?

What if your kids offer their organs to buy you out? Will that work?

@markvonwahlde @jimgon what if you buy organs and supply them

@markvonwahlde

If you have money you probably aren’t going to prison.

Unless you steal from rich people.

@jimgon a boring dystopia 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
@jimgon what could go wrong?
@jimgon Dang. That's sounds like a dystopian, nightmarish film plot.
@jimgon just in case you didn't think prisons are a reincarnation of the old institutions of slavery.
@jimgon ...That is *not* how to solve the problem of not having enough organ donors. What the everlasting hell.

@jimgon

New defense strategy:

But judge, the accuser has the same blood type as me. THEY'RE FRAMING ME TO HARVEST MY ORGANS!

@jimgon @Popehat For all the talk of “bodily autonomy”, one wonders whether they even *thought* of talking with an ethicist before writing this bill.

@jimgon the horror ☹️😧

what is the matter with people

@jimgon I don't think it will see the light of day, but "sell your body for reduced sentences" really feels dystopian as fuck
@jimgon Horrifying! Isn’t this against the law?

@SLOTricia

Not if the state make it legal.

(It won’t get out of committee.)

Larry Niven was on to something....

@jimgon I keep thinking about Niven every time.
United Nations Concerned About Organ Harvesting In China

In June 2021, a group of U.N. independent experts expressed their concerns at allegations of organ harvesting carried out on minority groups including Falun Gong practitioners, Uyghurs, Tibetans, Muslims and Christians, in detention in China.

@jimgon private prisons are already evil enough !!
@Seansmith @jimgon I did time in a private prison. While I hate what they stand for, it was much better than the state run prisons. Better facilities, better good, better medical care, and better law libraries.
@chrisapplegate @jimgon you make a great point, much like like the IRS and other state revenue systems, state funded enterprises are usually underfunded and understaffed! In a perfect world, the entire US prison system would be overhauled!

@Seansmith @chrisapplegate

The way we treat people convicted of a crime is generally immoral. We need sentencing reform and prison reform.

@jimgon @Seansmith I couldn't agree with you more. I work in criminal justice reform now. Also, I live in Kentucky where the Constitution still takes the voting rights of someone convicted of a felony in perpetuity.
@Seansmith @jimgon I often say that I'm a better man now, in spite of prison, rather than because of it. There is no rehabilitation or corrections going on there. The guards are the drug dealers. I told the warden once that, if I'd really understood the system, I'd have just gotten a job in corrections in order to sell drugs and avoid prosecution. Yes, it definitely needs overhauling, but it brings in far too much money to the state, here at least, in order for the government to consider that.
@jimgon They need to read Larry Niven’s work. It got to the point in his universe that EVERYTHING was a capital offense, and the only sentence was death, and complete harvesting of everything useful.
@jimgon. Yeah, I was puzzled to see this coming from Massachusetts. Seems more like Mississippi.

@wbtphdjd

Massachusetts has many moments where one would not be proud. I think on the whole though we try to be better.

@jimgon For a moment I thought I was in the middle of a dystopian sci-fi novel.

Hideous idea.

@jimgon They cited the need to expand the organ donor pool for minorities, since so many were locked up, that's where they expanded to. Seems like maybe they could just fix the disparity in the criminal justice system, to me.
What's the organ bounty on a Massachusetts lawmaker?
@jimgon The sadistic psycopaths unmask themselves.

@jimgon

If they donate a heart, it will be reduced a lot. Just release them before the removal, and they will be free for the rest of their lives.
