#JKRowling doesn't just espouse transphobic beliefs [0], she funds a sexual assault clinic that explicitly turns away trans women [1], and aligns herself with eugenicists and alt-right anti-abortion homophobes [2].

Buying #HogwartsLegacy directly funds her efforts to harm trans causes and take away the rights of trans people. You should not buy it.

A Complete Breakdown of the J.K. Rowling Transgender-Comments Controversy

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling first came under fire for posting a series of controversial tweets about the transgender community in 2020.

Glamour
@stevestreza It’s as if she’s seen the hit in the sale of her books due to being a POS and wanted to “expand her brand” to make more money. So of course she chooses to market HP to people that play video games. There’s enough people that will buy the game for it to still be worth it for her.
@stevestreza honestly none of her public comments seem as egregious as they are reported on many outlets. She has beliefs, shouldn’t she have the right to have them? Are they bad opinions? Yes, but they don’t seem as extreme as they are often made out to be. I find it extreme to go as far as to tell other people enjoying a game is funding some type of an evil person. She may be wrong, but she is not evil. Buying Hogwarts legacy is not the same as buying something like Mein Kampf, Respectfully
@Bto They are not "bad opinions", they are a political position which she regularly leverages to regress trans rights, or to deny trans people access to care. She has a fortune to use to achieve those political goals. She's aligned herself with ultra-conservatives who advocate eugenics and taking away gay rights or abortion rights. And by purchasing the game, you directly and indirectly fund those causes.
@stevestreza but isn’t everything political? As much as I am pro aboriton rights, I do see how someone who is against is still coming from a not evil person perspective. It’s a gray area I wish we could all at least accept that. Eugenics topic I Willa crept I am not to familiar with. But I think, equating this game to this is not right. Like it or not Harry Potter will always be a cultural thing that people will flock to immerse themselves. Rightfully so.
@stevestreza and I don’t think purchasing the game will mean they support anti LGBTQ causes or other causes for that matter. Using this logic, we would have to avoid a vast amount of literature, art and folklore becuase of their authors policial beliefs. I hope you understand I am not fighting you on this one. Just giving my opinion respectfully.
@Bto The reason I provided sources was so that those who did not realize these things about her can learn.

@Bto @stevestreza

It absolutely will and you're a part of the problem.

@Bto @stevestreza It reallydoes matter, and her politics come through in the game; some of the events the game is centered around involve maintaining the oppression of marginalized groups that are rooted in things like antisemitic caricatures.
@eschaton @stevestreza sorry for my ignorance on this one, who are those being marginalized in the game? I know very little of the game that’s why I am asking.
@Bto @stevestreza The game involves putting down the "goblin uprising,” where the short large-nosed people who live in a ghetto and handle the wizarding world’s money want more self-determination rather than to be subject to a bunch of exclusionary rules.
@eschaton ohhh yeah there you are definetly right. That’s super anti semitic. That actually makes sense. Actually the movies are as guilty as that yikes.
@Bto @stevestreza trans rights are not a gray area and neither is bodily autonomy.
@chairgirlhands @stevestreza nor is freedom of speech. As much as I dislike her speech.
@Bto @chairgirlhands Nobody is denying her speech, nor could we, as she has a fortune and infamy which give her a massive megaphone to espouse her hateful beliefs.
@stevestreza @Bto Germany put legal restrictions on hate speech after WW2 because they realized an effective way to prevent genocide is to stop people from planning it and advocating for it openly. The US should do the same.
@chairgirlhands @stevestreza no. Government should never hold that power over anybody’s belief or speech. Like Voltaire said “I don’t agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it”. That is true freedom. Germany’s method is a recipe for a pressure cooker.
@Bto @stevestreza Germany’s method has kept fascism out and led to a better society than the US. Minorities are safer there than here. Maybe let go of your starry eyed idealism and do what actually keeps people safe.
@chairgirlhands @stevestreza you think minorities are unsafe here? Where is here exactly?
@Bto @chairgirlhands @stevestreza what rowling does is in opposition to human rights, which trans rights are a part of. if you believe that it's okay to spread hate that results in anti-trans violence, you are against human rights
@Bto @stevestreza you would’ve been so fucking useless in 1930s Germany
@Bto @stevestreza I don't know what public comments you've seen, the ones I've seen have been horrible. She specifically targets trans people with othering and demeaning language, and makes baseless claims that their accommodation and indeed very existence represent a threat to others' safety. That, to me, is evil.
@eschaton @stevestreza I haven’t seen those, could you show me where she did that? The ones I saw where the ones when she states that a woman’s (biological woman) was unique etc..
@Bto @stevestreza Do you really not know about (and are unable to find yourself) all of her transphobic rants? Or do you agree with her?
@eschaton @stevestreza in all honesty I haven’t been able to find the more egregious comments you are referring too. Again I am open to changing my mind. It’s from an article that shows where it started back in 2020. But maybe she’s said worse things since then.
@Bto @stevestreza A lot of the things she's said directly are dog-whistles, a lot of the things she's been more explicit about are insisting that it's unfair for anyone to face consequences for being publicly transphobic "because they're standing up for women."
@Bto @stevestreza Oh yeah, and then there's the stuff in Steve's OP, like the women's shelter she's funding explicitly refusing to employ or serve all women.

@Bto @stevestreza Here's another summary: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/jk-rowlings-anti-transgender-stance-and-hogwarts-legacy/1100-6501632/

From the aticle:
> In her essay, Rowling argued, "When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he's a woman--and, as I've said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones--then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth."

This is evil shit.

JK Rowling's Anti-Transgender Stance And Hogwarts Legacy

With a brand-new Harry Potter game on the way, now is the time to unpack and try to understand the impact of franchise creator JK Rowling's discriminatory behaviour.

GameSpot
@Bto @stevestreza bullshit. She wants trans women in men’s prisons. She’s genocidal.

@Bto @stevestreza #JKRowling donated to, and advised her #Twitter followers to donate to, Allison Bailey.

Bailey founded #LGBAlliance, which seeks to end #transgender protections in the #UK

It sued the #LGBT charity #Stonewall claiming its actions towards transgender rights violated the Equality Act of 2010

It also seeks to exclude transgender people from laws banning #ConversionTherapy

That unscientific, and often brutal, practice causes long-term psychological harm to those who undergo it.

@Bto @stevestreza

Yeah, no. She's a horrible person. Yes, it actually is. If transgender people tell you someone or some place is discriminating against them, listen.

@Bto @stevestreza nobody is saying she’s not allowed to have those beliefs. We’re just calling her an asshole for it.
@Bto @stevestreza She wants people I love to have a worse life, to have then not exist, she pals around with fash. She could just shut her racist, terfy, fash mouth and hang out in her castle. So she can have her opinions and the rest of us can point out that they are racist, terfy, fashy and ask her to shut her racist, terfy, fash mouth and hang out in her castle.
@stevestreza She’s the reason I won’t purchase Hogwart’s Legacy. I can’t support a bigot.
@stevestreza why does she look so dead inside in every photo of her
@stevestreza
[3] whatever you already have is hey, she really didn't "speak her mind" until 2020. Just don't give another penny and don't boost the hype

@stevestreza

Yup. I love the world she created, but I WILL NOT fund her anymore.

I want to play the game, but I'm avoiding anything Harry Potter.

@stevestreza yea screw all the hard working developers and employees whose paycheck is dependent on building a game like this. Let’s take money out of their pocket for our self righteous cause against ONE person.
@bgregus What evidence do you have that the individuals who made the game are due royalties or any sort of compensation beyond the salary they have already made?
@stevestreza what evidence do you have that they don’t? You’re being self righteous. It’s ok to admit it but not everyone thinks it’s kosher.
@bgregus Decades of common practice in the games industry that shows game developers not getting royalties.
@stevestreza and yes. I am aware she is a colossal piece of shit. I am also a die hard liberal who thinks that this “cancel culture” has hit critical mass of ridiculous.
@bgregus Where did I say anything about "cancel culture"?
@stevestreza you’re saying nobody should buy the game because it funds her. That means according to you “people just can’t enjoy Harry Potter” because the creator is scum. That’s the very definition of cancel culture my friend.
@bgregus very curious what politics leads you to simultaneously say "saying transphobic things and funding transphobic causes and associating with alt-right homophobes is bad" and "people being criticized for saying and funding bad things is 'cancel culture'"
@stevestreza Haha. Ok pal. Enjoy your high horse while the rest of us enjoy the content we want to enjoy. We don’t need people like you making us feel bad for it. Who are you to do that to another person? That’s pretentious of you.
@stevestreza question. If you are so self righteous why are you still advertising a twitter account in your mastodon profile? Do I need to send you articles about how bad of a human Elon is? Yet you support his platform. Interesting, no?
@stevestreza I assumed this would be where you would magically stop responding. Please stop implying that people are not allowed to enjoy something they love just because the creator is garbage and that if they do they’re somehow an enemy of the trans community. Thank you and have a nice night.

@bgregus "people are not allowed to enjoy something they love" "they're an enemy of the trans community"

Yeah see I never said anything like that, so congrats on inventing a whole argument you could get mad at.
