Designers with their own instances can potentially have a ton of fun on Mastodon. 🙂 I plan to make a bunch of them for our instance. This is just a test to see how to add them.  (And yes I know they don't work in Ivory yet 😅 )
I'm willing to bet the good folk over at @Iconfactory are planning to make really cool emojis soon if not already. I keep checking this for sneak peaks: https://emojos.in/iconfactory.world 😅

@mark Aww man, I also want to use

Dunno ‘bout you, but I think [email protected] sounds good 😅

@simonbs Ah, just adding these to my personal instance… lol
@mark I know I can want one all I like but that's sharp... and I can't have one
@mark All the more motivation to get them into Ivory ❤️
@mark I believe this, and edit, are the only two things I’m missing. Everything else is not important.
@maique Edit should be...soon. 🙃
@mark Oh yes, @mammoth is such as Ivory a very cool client!
@mark oh I'd actually been wondering this, are those different from these ones?
@rardk64 Yea the tapbots ones are built into our app so people know who work on Tweetbot and in this case, Ivory. But would like to get rid of those and just use custom emoji’s at some point.
@mark oh that's cool! I'd been assuming they worked because of these haha
@mark @rardk64 sometimes i see other icons, what do those mean ?
@april @rardk64 When you put a custom instance emoji in your name or bio, Ivory will use it as a badge next to your avatar.

@mark I hope they make it even more customizable with less work.

I can imagine for brands who run their own instance it's important. They don't need signup, create an account, explore, or other buttons. Neither are the sidebars useful for them.

The presentation should be a clean list of toots and a list of people on your server. No extra stuff.

@mark

👍🏼. It seems to work on #ivory. Or did I miss something.

mastodon.social icon

@thewaytozion Yea one will work as a badge in the avatar. But doesn't work anywhere else yet.
@mark 😺 Ivory needs a neighborly cat friend to ride around with, kneading on his back. 🐾🐘💕
@mark custom icons are a great feature and have attracted a few people to my instance over the last months. I can't wait for full support in @ivory
@mark NOW I know what all that (colon)blobcat(colon) stuff @stux toots means!
@mark don't tempt me. after I'm done losing all my time figuring out how to host my own instance I'll lose all my time to making fun emoji and stickers
@gn We are all here waiting for that. 😁
@mark @gn hang tight i'm working on a post for hosting your own instance :)
@stammy @mark @gn via aws or something else?
@stammy @mark @gn 👀Started working on a Mastodon/ActivityPub 101 presentation to share with my product design org which summarizes a lot of your last post. Maybe self-hosting will be the 201 topic.
@stammy curious to hear if you’ve had any issues with late or missing content while running a small instance? I’ve heard some rumblings but still considering spinning one up.
@joshferrara Hrm personally haven’t experienced any issues. But I feel like that could happen pretty easily if your sidekiq worker doesn’t have many threads and gets backed up a ton? (And if you’ve added any relays that keep it extra busy). I don’t have a super beefy server but it’s also not too small. 4GB ram, nvme ssd, all media on cloudfront
@stammy That’s great to hear! Thanks, and looking forward to your guide 🎉
@mark @gn would be really cool to have a place to exchange emoji and badges. For that to gain traction the instances should be able to accept custom digital assets from users. Guessing I’m just making a whole new platform in my mind.
@gn @mark If you haven’t checked it out yet; I’ve been very successful getting my own #Mastodon instance running on #Linode using @cloudron - you can use the #Linode #Marketplace app as well: https://www.linode.com/marketplace/apps/linode/mastodon-server/

@mark Excuse me while I copy that boost Emojo to my instance. Thank you very much. :)
@mark if @gowalla doesn’t jump on this… I’d be sad.
@mark Interestingly the angle seems off in the feed View, but not the detail view.
@philip Yea I had to adjust the angle on the smaller one for it to look right. I might try to improve it in the future. 🙂

@mark I probably wouldn’t have ever noticed it, if you hadn’t driven my attention to the icon specifically.

Understand it’s a compromise for a reason, just funny little detail now that I see it.

@mark will these potentially work if not on your instance? Can others join or migrate (is that the right expression?) to tabots.social?
@simonharper Apparently server administrators have the ability to import emojis that the server has seen and then you can use them. But I still have to spend some time reading up on how all that works.
@mark ah ok. So maybe mastodon.social likely wouldn’t… and tabots.social is a private instance I guess?
@simonharper Yea unless there's a way for a server to auto accept emoji's from other instances. I just don't know yet. 🙂

@mark They can. Go over to custom emoji, filter by your instance, that will show all the emoji known to their instance coming from yours, import all to local emoji list. Done. Anyone on that instance will be able to use them.

@simonharper

@mark Hey Mark, could you please put Ivory’s “horn” bug someplace proper? Like in the top right of the nav bar. Buttons should not be floating over the content area. Thanks. #UXDesignEngineer
@scenario We have plans to optionally place it elsewhere in the future. But it's honestly not that big of a deal. Most people scroll from older to newer So you read the content well away from the button. If you read from new to old, you can always move the button to the top, but it's not much different than not being able to see the content behind the tab bar either.
@mark Yep, I’m familiar with those rationalizations. But you still have a primary button floating over a UIScrollView instead of in a bar where buttons go. You also have two similar magnifying glass icons occupying the rightmost corners, when Search/Filter is not a primary task.

any plans to provide an entry for the public (at least to #Ivory users) to tapbots.social?

Have seen this trend, for instance, #mammoth has their own instance (moth.social) and public allowed to join there!

@vin2ktalks No we don't have the interest or time to manage a public instance right now. But who knows what the future will bring. 🙂
@mark Single-user instances are great for customization but really break the federated model. Discovery of new content is super difficult; you become a community of one.
@invariant Yes. That's up to an individual to decide. A lot of designers are pretty savvy and there are many ways to discover new people. But I wasn't really suggesting we all need our own single instances. Was more trying to make a point that it can be a fun playground to create something that many people can potentially use. 🙂 I guess I just wrote a bit too quickly in excitement.
@mark No worries here, I'm on a single-user instance specifically for its customization purposes. But it *is* lonely and not for everybody.
@mark Too bad it looks so blurred on the profile image in the timeline. 🧐
@mark Just got a camera one added to mastodon.art instance :)   https://elk.zone/mastodon.art/@Mattmaber/109800559578358208
