Apparently JoinMastodon.org was recently attacked by a DDoS.

The Fediverse needs more than just JoinMastodon to help new people find servers. It's a single point of failure that could be crashed or bought out.

I've started an independent curated server guide at https://fedi.garden and would encourage others to create curated onboarding sites too.

If you run a Fedi instance (Masto or not) that complies with the Mastodon Covenant (https://joinmastodon.org/covenant) please get in touch.

@feditips When one Mastodon instance goes down, 99% of the network is still alive.

@jan

Indeed, but how do new people find out which server to join if JoinMastodon.org is down or bought out?

Sites like instances.social aren't really suitable for new people who want some kind of minimum safety and reliability requirements.

Uncurated servers mean new people could end up on an instance that closes down without warning, for example. Or an instance without proper moderation.

@feditips They visit https://fedi.garden πŸ˜‰

What's the problem with instances.social?
Mastodon instances

@grischa @feditips @jan

At least instances.social brought up over 10 Norwegian language instances. The Garden doesn't have Norway listed as a country in Europe, nor Norwegian listed as a language.

A big problem for me, though, is that neither let me search for an instance in my country. I want an instance in my country (and then with other wants AFTER that) because it is so much simpler to send support money nationally than internationally.

@feditips @jan I never had any problems joining. I looked to see what people I followed on Twitter were joining and just googled it
@feditips oh is that why I get a 401 error in loggin in?
@feditips Thanks! I just sent an email. I would love to see mrtodon.net added!

@CamsJam @feditips

I was going to say, johnmastodon.org could be a great false target, right on the intellectual level of attackers.

JohnMastodonFacts (@[email protected])

#JohnMastodon blocked the recent #DDoS attack on the fediverse easily with his techno-telepathy, and then used his powers to make the attackers' own computers explode. He is already hunting the #TrunklessInvertibrates responsible, with the intention of chaining them to the nosecones of SpaceX shuttles seconds prior to liftoff. John is a good man, but is fiercely protective of his creation. #JohnMastodonFacts #GloryToTheFediverse #TheResistanceWillBeFederated #Mastodon #Fediverse

Thank you - and love the curated list of accounts you post to highlight new people to follow.
I have a site where I started to store posts that list accounts to follow on a given topic. I wanted a place where anyone (whichever instance they’re on or however big their network is) to find lists of accounts that might help them make important connections e.g. starting on mastodon, job listings, law folk, news orgs, mastodon admins, etc. Although you can bookmark these yourself or add people to a list, I thought it would be handy to have somewhere you could do a quick search for a post - and from there link back to mastodon
I’m only doing this in my spare time so right now just 11 lists.

@feditips @KuJoe might want to get mindly.social listed on here
@feditips recognize that each time you widen the landscape, you increase confusion. The whole value of joinmastodon is that a single point of entry assures newcomers they've gone to the right place. For example, you wouldn't want multiple web addresses to apply for social security, right? When you go to ssa.gov, you're quickly assured you've gone to the right place. Far better, IMO, to secure the system against attack!
@feditips Yep, I run a Maston instance (gamepad.club) that has signed up to the Covenant. How can I help?
@feditips We also have an independent directory of πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Canadian instances here: https://mastodonserver.ca/

Is Elon's money at work? Or is it one of his cultists?

@feditips
My mstdn.plus account has been frozen and not updating for the last 3 days! I created this new mstdn.social account but I can't seem to move my followers from plus to social. It's just so disappointing as I had to post a #FollowMeFollowYou notification to all my followers so I can rebuild my network.
@feditips Anyone know if there’s a good instance for Southern California? Come on, LA!
@paulmather007 @feditips I haven't seen any SoCal instances, or even general California, just SF/NorCal.
@feditips DNS `SRV` records could be useful. Each existing instance could publish itself + a few others (that it already exchanges with), so that querying any instance DNS records gives a first batch of possible servers, and then one can query those for more and so on. A web page (or multiple ones) can be build on top of this with regular pulling. This leverage the DNS as decentralized database.
@feditips Question: If any instance is welcome in the covenant, wouldn't it make sense to rename it "The Fediverse Covenant?"

@feditips

I'd say this is something that should be considered for development as a part of a mastodon server installation; a discovery page, that is.

@feditips We at Mindly.Social comply with the Mastodon Covenant, and are already on the JoinMastodon website. We would love to have our instance listed! CC @KuJoe
@feditips Med-mastodon.com is another.
Is there a reason why you don't list friendica, pleroma, hubzilla instances?
Atm I would be interested in a Pleroma instance, but this software is not available as filter.
