Apparently JoinMastodon.org was recently attacked by a DDoS.

The Fediverse needs more than just JoinMastodon to help new people find servers. It's a single point of failure that could be crashed or bought out.

I've started an independent curated server guide at https://fedi.garden and would encourage others to create curated onboarding sites too.

If you run a Fedi instance (Masto or not) that complies with the Mastodon Covenant (https://joinmastodon.org/covenant) please get in touch.

@feditips When one Mastodon instance goes down, 99% of the network is still alive.

@jan

Indeed, but how do new people find out which server to join if JoinMastodon.org is down or bought out?

Sites like instances.social aren't really suitable for new people who want some kind of minimum safety and reliability requirements.

Uncurated servers mean new people could end up on an instance that closes down without warning, for example. Or an instance without proper moderation.

What's the problem with instances.social?
Mastodon instances

@grischa @feditips @jan

At least instances.social brought up over 10 Norwegian language instances. The Garden doesn't have Norway listed as a country in Europe, nor Norwegian listed as a language.

A big problem for me, though, is that neither let me search for an instance in my country. I want an instance in my country (and then with other wants AFTER that) because it is so much simpler to send support money nationally than internationally.

@feditips @jan I never had any problems joining. I looked to see what people I followed on Twitter were joining and just googled it
