Last month, I saw this wonderfully entertaining process video of artist Cat Graffam recreating Goya's "Saturn Devouring His Son" in Mario Paint. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJSx7q-Mt0c

I loved it so much, I bought it… in the form of the original Mario Paint cartridge she made it on. It's my new favorite possession. Digital art ownership with provenance and scarcity, no blockchain required!

In her latest video, she recreated Caravaggio's "Judith Beheading Holofornes" with Kid Pix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J67oA_FL1Nc

@andybaio do you have plans for when the battery in the cart expires?
@xarph i have the backup save
@andybaio excellent, carry on

@xarph @andybaio

Believe it or not, the battery probably has another 40 or 50 years left in it.

Battery life of old game cartridges

Most cartridge-based games that keep save-data use a battery to back it up. As we all know, batteries don't last forever and eventually they will run dry. The big question is when that will happen. ------------------------------------------------- NES ---------------------------------------------...

@andybaio @xarph

How is it saved?

On video tape, as suggested by original mario paint manual? 😀

@andybaio
I can't say it's something I would do personally, but compared to some of the other digital art concepts I've seen, at least there's a pleasing level of physicality here.
@andybaio I spent so much time as a kid drawing in Mario Paint that I can hear the background music just looking at the UI.
@andybaio I'm guessing you've seen Nerdwriter's take on that painting, but have you see the Great Art Explained on Goya's black paintings? https://youtu.be/9JqS6HfsYIM

@peterme I love all your YouTube recs! Thanks for this one.
@andybaio Wow, that's, uh, something.😲
@andybaio This is so great. Hope there's a fresh save battery in that sucker though!

@andybaio I did a high school history project using Mario Paint to plot out the Battle of the Bulge.

Got an A+

@andybaio god this is funny and incredible
@andybaio Would love to see it hooked up to an SNES via ribbon cable with an LCD Display, all under glass and an ornate frame hanging on the wall.
@andybaio I finally had time to watch this, thanks for sharing it. It reminded me of Pinot Wahyu Ichwandardi’s art made on retro Macs.
@cdevroe Love Pinot so much. Have you been following his recovery from a severe stroke last year? Long thread from his wife here, most recent update from yesterday. https://twitter.com/ditut/status/1622037906440290304
