Ivory is out. It’s the Mastodon client by the folks who made Tweetbot and it’s the best of the first crop of clients I’ve tested if you’re in iOS.

@will wow. Initial impression is that this is *gorgeous*
@rklau If you didn't use Tweetbot, you missed out. It's a rare situation where they are great at both anticipating how users want to interact with software and communicating that with visual design. IIRC they invented one of the things we now think of as a core iOS design language (pull to refresh or something equally ubiquitous).
@will @rklau you’re thinking of tweetie, that got bought by Twitter proper in like 2010. Tweetbot was absolutely groundbreaking back then in other ways though.
@will There sure are a lot of weird ass other apps names Ivory, but this is very pretty.
@will They definitely took it to another level, while also holding down the legendary TB feel. :-)
@will Sadly it has a subscription model instead of a one time purchase which is a no-go for me.
@will Gorgeous interface. Wish it was available as a one time purchase.
@will Taking it for a spin now, and while it's admittedly very nice looking... I don't know what it's doing that other apps aren't that justifies $2.99/mo. #Ivory
@jaymerryfield @will Jay, consider it an investment! 🤣 It keeps them employed and putting a decade of skill/talent to making an app that's really, really good (in the future). Which, I think we'll see in the months ahead as they pivot to Mastodon development in earnest after Elon shut them out of Twitter so abruptly.
@vsp I can definitely see some differences/improvements over the official app + Metatext, I'm just unsure how much subscription creep I'm interested in participating in. 😅 Already contributing to my instance on a monthly basis, and I don't know if the extra functionality will drastically improve my Mastodon experience. I DEFINITELY wish the developers all the success in the world, and I'll keep up with their developments as I'm able to.
@jaymerryfield @will Personally I feel the direction the interface is going, and this still essentially a beta, is going to be a lot more functional than the others I’ve used. As for price, over the years I’ve found supporting a solid app development team pays off with apps that are consistently updated and developed. It’s why I’ve paid for #1Password for more than a decade rather than use a free alternative like #LastPass.
@Chigaze I definitely like to and want to support smaller developers, I'm just unsure yet if there's going to be an increase in usability of Mastodon for me by using he app vs. the free options out there. It's a change in perspective to pay for social media, and while I'm happy to help support our instance, I don't know how much I want to allow my subscriptions to creep up. Time will tell, and I'll keep in touch with Ivory, for sure! 🙂
@jaymerryfield Completely understandable as there are so many things to subscribe to. I think with Mastodon there will definitely be free options, including the websites themselves for free, and paid apps for more advanced things. In fact I think the paid apps will need to work hard to provide the value needed to justify paying.
@Chigaze @jaymerryfield I’m looking at Ivory right now and it looks and feel
Great.
@will tried it out. But doesn’t seem to offer more than ice cubes for me. Am I missing smth?
@gottfired @will I still find Ice Cubes’ scrolling kind of janky. Ivory is smooth as butter.
@scottintokyo @will what I like about icecube is looking at local timelines of other instances
@gottfired @will So far as I can tell Ivory doesn’t have that feature
@will @hynek rats… doesn’t seem to work with pleroma (yet) which is weird, because all other clients I tried do far do..,
@will what can it do for an unsophisticated user?

@will So hold on, is this a different app than the Android Mastodon client also called "Ivory"? If not, why do they have different dev names attached to it?

I mostly just use the web app on Android as well, but this seems like a bit confusing ATM.

@will any recommendations for Android? I'm using the default mastodon app or pinafore on mobile web and tbh I could really use something better.
@blherrou @will Tusky is probably worth trying.
@blherrou @will I haven't tried many, but #Tusky is great.
@will this might make me spend more time on Mastodon. The lack of a decent app has been torturous.
@will Have you tried out Toot! ? I have been really enjoying it and the threading/replies UI is pretty slick. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/toot/id1229021451
‎Toot!

‎Toot! is a client for the Mastodon social network. It is beautiful, and full of character and whimsy. What makes Toot! special? - It is delightful. It is full of beautiful design, animation, amusing details and hidden treasures. - It is fast and robust. It caches data locally to let you read withou…

@jonathanlee @will I use Toot! as my primary Mastodon app because of its feature set, but I don’t know if I like the UI that much. I think I prefer Woolly’s or tooot’s approach or just the web UI from Mastodon.
@will @benny From reading this post on another client to opening Ivory, only four new posts appeared on my timeline.
@will it looks great, but I can’t justify that price point - it’s almost double the regular donation fee for my server.
@will Thanks! Just got it. 🙂

@will @grantgochnauer Interesting - in ‘free’ mode you can’t like or reply to anything. I’d like to try it (without fear of auto-subscriptions) first. It already feels awesome tho.

Wonder when the Mac version will arrive.

@talios @will good question on mac version. I hope soon! You can always do a 7 day trial and then immediately cancel so you will have the 7 days and won’t auto renew
@grantgochnauer @will 2-3 minutes in and I’m almost at the ‘sub’ level already :)
@talios @will Yeah for me, it was an instant buy. Did the annual. I was a loyal Tweetbot user for *years*
@will Any ETA for an Android version?
@krakalak @will I doubt they will get Objective C code to run on Android.
@will It’s a subscription? That can fuck right off. Uninstalled without even bothering to try the 7 day crippled trial. I’ll revisit when it’s 5 bucks to purchase. I’ll even pay again for the next major version upgrade in a few years. But get away from me with that subscription BS.
@jerimiah797 They moved to subs for Tweetbot years ago in order to build a sustainable business, given the niche nature of custom clients for social networks. I'm happy to support an indie dev doing great work but I totally understand if you don't want to.
@will I’m sorry for the language but I have a viceral reaction to subscription services these days, especially for apps. Let me just buy it.

@will it is increasingly bizarre when #elk is also up and coming, being promoted through organic social networking, and is free both as in #beer and #oss.

A battle of moral philosophies in this world of economic precarity.

@jerimiah797 that’s your prerogative. I’m happy to support developers whose work I rely on so they can focus on the projects full time. I also run my own instance, so ymmv.
@jerimiah797 having spent a lot of time talking to folks who make massively successful FOSS projects, one of the biggest issues in the space is that practically no one pays for anything.
@will I agree, it is a dilemma!
@will @jerimiah797 The reasoning for TweetBot was that Twitter was limiting them to max 100,000 users.
@will I’m enjoying Mammoth and it’ll be officially released soon
@will
Do you mean out as in released and available? Or out as in not as in hot or not or baseball?
@ipd The App Store link implies it is available for purchase :)
@will Wondering if you know how to pin/follow another communities public timeline in Ivory?
@will Damn, do I have to buy an iPhone now?
@kernic the guy who made Fenix for Twitter is making a solid looking Android client. Haven’t tried it though.
@will Thanks for the recommend, trying it out now. Looks good so far!
@will does anybody know the difference between "pro" & "premier"?
@LenW The Premier includes some minor stuff (icons, etc). It’s basically a higher tier of support for the developer
