@atpfm @caseyliss I'm with you Casey, in my top 10 movie favorites.
@atpfm @caseyliss next time you get a bright idea, Jack, put it in a memo
@atpfm @caseyliss making me think of a marathon of late 80s-early 90s spy thriller with big name stars: No Way Out, Sneakers, Hunt for Red October
@atpfm @caseyliss loved the book, haven’t seen the movie 🫣 guess I have to now🤷‍♂️

@atpfm @caseyliss @siracusa @marcoarment I absolutely love how half the dialog is between Neill doing his best Russian accent and Sean Connery doing his best Scottish accent.

The only thing funnier Connery ever did was how he said, “pendejo” in The Highlander.

@atpfm @caseyliss +1 for the air popper. Spray butter as necessary after it pops. 🤌🏻
@atpfm @caseyliss An absolute favorite of mine, so I’m looking forward to hear you all discuss it

@atpfm @caseyliss Air fryer popcorn. Use less oil. Pops like stovetop, convenient like microwave, fraction of the oil. Downside is size of air fryer, but if it’s just two people, you’re fine.

I’m with John and Casey: Hunt for Red October ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

@atpfm I'm even more of a Cold War kid than @siracusa (born mid-60s), but I've never seen HfRO.

I have, however, made a *ton* of popcorn. No special-purpose appliance necessary: Put 1/3 cup high-quality kernels and 1tbs EVOO in 3qt heavy saucepan w/lid. Medium heat. When you hear the popping start, gently shake the pan over the heat until time between pops increases to 1-2s. Remove from heat. Toss in a bowl w/any seasoning you like. Makes about 2qt popped.

I use stainless-clad alum

@atpfm @caseyliss Since Casey mentioned his love for submarine movies, I recommend he take a look at The Wolf's Call. It's on Netflix and is a French movie about French nuclear subs. I can't vouch for the English dub since I watched it in French with subtitles but I really enjoyed it. It has the most outrageous scene I've ever seen in a movie with someone working out a password. https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-wolfs-call

@atpfm I read the book before seeing the film. One of the few where I can recommend reading/watching both because the adaptation is so good.
Also, Sam Neill wants to see Montana, next time I saw him on film, at the beginning of Jurassic Park, he's in Montana. Made me very happy.
@atpfm @caseyliss great episode! This is my go-to home popcorn process: https://youtu.be/byqaZhMTwAs

@atpfm why isn’t @siracusa ’s popcorn popper in the show notes? I have a whirly pop which I love, but I'm intrigued by the idea of an automatic version. But yes, John nailed it, no air poppers and no microwave bags. Coconut oil and Flavacol is all that’s needed.
@basepi My popper is terrible. I haven’t found a good one. https://amzn.to/3Xw7zjn
Amazon.com

@siracusa in that case you might try the (in)famous whirly pop. A touch annoying to clean but you control the heat and speed. It’s really excellent. https://a.co/d/1op9UjW
@atpfm @caseyliss If it pops up when I’m in FuboTV, almost always an automatic watch.

@atpfm aluminum foil, wrapped loosely over a standard large saucepan, with a few vent slits stabbed into it with a dinner knife. Oil and kernels in the pan. Apply heat. Shake the pan around during the popping phase to avoid burning (works best w/ gas stove). When popping slows to <1/sec, remove from heat, remove foil, dump into bowl(s) of choice. Season to taste.

“Popcorn maker.” Psh! Alton Brown would be ashamed of such a unitasker!

@atpfm I must clarify: “wrapped loosely” means the foil is not stretched tightly across the top, so that it can bulge to accommodate the expansion of the kernels. It is, however, shaped tightly around the outside so that it doesn’t blow off mid-pop.
@atpfm @caseyliss I’ve been able to listen to the popcorn discussion lead-in so far, and this is already a classic example of what makes ATP great.
@atpfm @caseyliss now I want popcorn machine and to watch The Hunt for Red October. But I’ll be strong and work for couple hours
@atpfm I like to make popcorn in a wok. Huge round lid to contain the pops. Jostle it around a bit instead of some whirly device.

@atpfm It has been a while since I have seen this, but yet another in 80’s aircraft carrier craze.

@atpfm @caseyliss it’s all about how the movie uses subtitles and the language switch to great effect - maybe one @marcoarment will enjoy!
@atpfm @caseyliss Great episode, but I think you missed the opportunity to pick Jaws!
@atpfm @caseyliss @siracusa @marcoarment a bit late to the popcorn discussion (I was away camping) but there are some great microwave popcorn makers available. https://www.amazon.com/Original-HOTPOP-Microwave-Collapsible-Dishwasher/dp/B01M1CJNXH/
It air-pops the kernels so no oil required (unless you want to add it), it’s almost as easy to make as pre-packaged microwave popcorn and doesn’t require a stand-alone maker. Healthier, cheaper and easy!
@atpfm @caseyliss I’m a bit late with this but for Cold War nuclear submarine brinksmanship, I highly recommend Crimson Tide. Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman and a supporting cast including Viggo Mortenson and James Gandolfini.
